Here I ride a 4 year old Dressage horse for the first time. This is an amazing Dressage horse with lots of potential. He has amazing gaits and a super temperament. I use canter trot canter transitions to hep improve the connection, straightness, and his balance. Big thanks to Joseph Newcomb for letting me ride this special boy!!

Finch! It’s amazing to me that you can just get on Finch and he is so beautiful and willing. Good riding by both of you. Love Mom.

Glad you didn’t edit out that time he ran through instead of transition to canter then you demonstrated so well how to set him up. I realised where my transition is going wrong. Thank you

Such a difference between how he was trailing the hind end at the first and then he sharpened up after the transitions. Lovely horse. Bet he’ll do well in his upcoming competitions.

Love seeing you guys work together. I’m sure it’s great for Joseph to see Finch being ridden by you and to learn from you as well. Fresh eyes and another perspective is always helpful

Very informative. The leaning also applies to old horses, so it was super nice to see the difference when you had straightened him out.

Small world!!! I googled “creating balance in a young horse” and this popped up. I used to live in San Diego!! I have a 4 year old Connemara and we’re struggling with balance at the canter. Thanks for the video.

Hi Amelia, I hand-wrote a bunch of notes in my journal while watching this video - great information - I have a 4-year-old so good to see you commenting on what constitutes 'young horse behaviour.' :-)

I'm curious. When going left you seem to have too much neck bend. Is it not more important to keep the neck in the middle of the chest. To have them going from the inside leg to the outside rein.

Great riding. I'm curious if you and Joseph do any work outside of the arena with the young horses to help them both physically and mentally. I have found that hills have been very helpful in developing my horse's top line and strengthening their hindquarters.

Can you do a video on improving canter rhythm and balance? My horse struggles to have a three beat canter. It's more four beat and lacks activity behind.

I will work on a video for this!! But ride more forward, working gaits and maybe try cantering over poles can help. Good luck!!

Do you have any suggestions for a very unbalanced right canter? My mare is a standardbred rescue which is already hard, I know. She collects beautifully at walk and trot and her left canter is lovely! Her right canter she drops her right shoulder, throws her head up, digs in with her front legs and is like a baby not knowing where her feet are. I’m not an advanced rider AT ALL! Here in Ontario, lessons are on hold due to Lockdown and I am really trying to teach her as much as I can over the winter. ANY help, tips or suggestions would be grateful. Riding her right canter is also like riding a sport motorcycle (crotch rocket lol) as she zooms around corners as I pray she doesn’t fall over and kill me!) HELP!?! @amelianewcombdressage
