It's just the pythagorean theorem (a^2 + b^2 = c^2) with an extra term. So instead of just a^2 + b^2 = c^2, the law of cosine gives c^2 = a^2 + b^2 - 2ab*cos(q) where q is the angle facing the side c. You can change the letters around to get three different law of cosine equations for each side (just make sure the angle is also changed).
