Very nice song. The reference to The Grapes of Wrath and the Dustbowl is nice. But as soon as the word “ native” appears, it takes my mind to just who truly lived and drew life on that native land before they had that land taken from them. That land was pasture, never meant for the crops white farmers greedily tried to grow. I’m not being rude; I’ve heard a farmer say it himself. The farmers, unknowingly created the Dustbowl themselves. Any of the American Natives who had the land stolen could have explained the crops grown by those who took the land that short rooted crops weren’t suited for deep crop land. Although they learned, after the Dustbowl catastrophe what caused it, instead of learning to mend their ways, they turned to bigger and bigger agribusinesses. Huge machines, artificial fertilizers, pesticides, nutritional depletion of the land all played their role in raping the same land, only this time they went deep enough to reach the underlying aquifer. They’ve been steadily draining that vital water to irrigate those giant unnatural crop areas. Now the aquifer is dangerously overused. What will happen to the same land when they’ve drained the aquifer? Will they be right back to Dustbowl conditions, only with the life giving underground water gone? Aside from the romanticizing ( another) ecological disaster, it really is a nice song.
