the problem is these people don't actually know what horror is and I'm 99% sure its because of how so many horror minecraft youtubers make their vids. Unfortunately, it leads to a pile of this - not fun, very annoying & frustrating to play with garbage you just want to uninstall. Sure there are a few that have intersted me (edgy as it sounds; I'm fairly desensitized to horror) for their ability to be scary or maybe something that I like to have so I can go "Oh yeah he's here I like him C:" but will absolutely scare my bff playing my custom modpack.

One classic example of a good horror MC antagonist was... Herobrine, and the thing is, his whole thing was being ominous and terrifying, not jumpscaring, not loud noises, just "did i break that block? did i place that torch? am i alone? Was that a person?" but these are just "OOOO I GOT NO EYES OOOO IMMA INSTA KILL YA HEHEEHEHEHE [Gets stuck on a 2block tall doorway]" But still, it's nice to have a fresh perspective from you, sure, alot of people review these monsters, but you're probably the first i've seen that is just "You know what? that isnt fun." instead of just baring with it making yourself miserable :')

Herobrine didn't try to make a new fear, he tried to make a fear come true. Basically Minecraft is an isolated game...the biggest fear of being in isolation isn't that you are alone, it's the thought that you are NOT alone. And Herobrine took advantage of that in a perfect manner, by making that thought become reality in a very VERY genius way. Rather than demonstrating how powerful he is up front, he decided to toy with them. This leaves Herobrine more...mysterious in terms of what he is capable of. Is this all he can do? Place and break blocks or is he just playing with his food? The biggest tool for horror writers is the reader / player's imagination. Whatever you can make will NEVER be as scary as whatever the mind of the player can come up with. So as players attempts to fill in the blanks of Herobrine, they're more likely to become fearful of him. If the author left out Herobrine being Notch's dead brother but instead implied Herobrine is something more...sinister, but never outright showing what he is, I think he would've instantly been held to a "Must Read!" Creepypasta such as The Russian Sleep Experiment, NES Godzilla and This House Has People In It

One of my favorite poor arguments in defense of these mods is "well if it can still scare you enough to make you jump, then surely it can be counted as scary, right?" Like... no. If you went to see a popular comedian expecting to hear some jokes that'll make you laugh, only for him to then come up and tickle you, you'd be pretty disappointed. Sure, it might have garnered a laugh, but if it had to be forced out of you like that rather than through solid material, you're just left scratching your head as to how the hell that comedian got popular to begin with.

The biggest problem with these horror mods is how quickly they lose their scare factor and just become plain fucking annoying The other day I was playing a mod pack with the Boiled One Reimagined mod on survival and mind you, TBO mod is an insta kill as soon as it gets too close to you, so no matter what armor, shield, how many hearts you have or item you have modded or vanilla, you get too close and he kills you immediately, he spawns in and plays a sound to indicate that he’s in however when it does play it takes around 10 seconds for his model to pop out of the ground So imagine my surprise when I’m running across a plain field and get jump scared immediately and die because I SOMEHOW ran too close to where he spawned Could you imagine if I was in hardcore? All that work and I suddenly just die because his model spawned in right in the direction I was heading

I can't program, but if i could, i would make it so what the mod does is set an ai player into your world, wich acts like a normal player would, even write messages in chat, build a house, etc. The ai wouldnt appear often, but if it did, it would move like a player, crouching behind a block, watching you. And if you dont notice it, it would follow you home and do stuff like keeps doors open, steal a few of any non-very valuable item. And of course loudly walk around your house. But the best part? The mod would never mention this, at best, it would just make a few QoL changes and not mention this ai at all."

I feel like the silence could have been good. Just imagining a world where you have to be quiet from a unseen threat. If that thing found you it could have maybe things annoying or creepy. Rebuilding stuff, leaving signs, taking stuff from chests forcing you to move and try again to stay quiet. Last time i checked horror mods like this you could look away from them and look back and in 90% cases they would disapear. If had good timing you could even block with a shield and look away just after they hit you and turn away right away and repeat until they disapear. And also do you test out normal modpacks or only horror modpacks? I know i played a modpack with my friends called "*Prominance II RPG*" I would like to see how you react to magic and RPG progression in minecraft. Actually there are alot of modpacks that i would like to see you play but i think this one is really fun and focused on exploration and finding bosses around the world. (You might like it so get some friends to try it out with you if you feel like it)
