I knew a few chinese students in the UK who really struggled to adapt to western culture and felt isolated, and I think this is a big factor in a lot of them returning. Also rather than censorship, It's not really in their culture to think about social and political issues very often at all. For the most part they just think about things that are directly visible and obviously impacting their everyday life. They don't learn critical thinking from a young age like many do in the west.

Given a O.8 total fertility rate (TFR) the next generation will only be around 120 million and the one after that roughly 50 million. Before the end of this century China's population will be smaller than the US at that TFR.

As I understand it, official numbers from the CCP for their population are wrong. The central government offered benefits to a region for higher birth rates so officials made up births. Actual population is estimated to be from over 200 million fewer to as much as like 500 million fewer ( CCP official data says 1.4 billion, adjusted predict 1.2, and some foreign estimates based on salt use predict as few as 800 million or so). China has a major population aging issue, and hundreds of millions of missing (never existed) people that should have been entering working age now. Assuming that the people faking those numbers added male/female in roughly equal numbers, and the actual population tended to abort or kill girls, then the actual lack of women would be far more severe than predicted here.

Actually many developed countries are suffering low birth rates like Japan in part because young people have so many options besides building a family first. the real number is at least twice that….parents want boys, and aborted female fetuses. Women and girls are second class human beings, and not wanted by parents! Voilà the result. It is not the one child policy either, since India never had this, and the imbalance there is even greater; it is illegal to tell parents the sex of the child before birth, but many doctors do anyway, which often means an abortion. Especially in Northern India, the imbalance is great. So no blabbing about the one child policy, blame modern medicine, and that what was meant to help being turned into a weapon - against girls.

I saw a documental about the sex imbalance in India. There are criminal organizations that kidnap women and girls in the rural areas to sell them as brides in the cities. The documental followed a man looking for his daughter (the police were colluded with the kidnappers). It was heartbreaking.

It cost money for a bigger place to house more kids, feed them, childcare, clothing , health care, school fees. Again, the same as in Russia (although they are not called that, of course). I have been hearing more and more about the presence of these organized crime syndicates operating in China. Falling birth rates is the net effect and reflects the financial and personal struggle marriage-age Chinese currently experience. It's just being practical against the backdrop of how marriages have become transactional in China. If you are already struggling to make ends meet, how could you even think about putting up the dowry if you want to marry, or having kids if you want to build a family? Surely, it's irresponsible to go into huge debt just to do so. Whether there are enough brides or not, economics will be the deciding factor for the declining population of China.
