We discuss the plea deal and release of Julian Assange with press freedom advocate Trevor Timm. “Thankfully, Julian Assange is finally going free today, but the press freedom implications remain to be seen,” says Timm, who explains the U.S. espionage case against Assange, which was opened under the Trump administration and continued under Biden. Timm expresses disappointment that Biden chose to continue prosecuting Assange rather than demonstrating his stated support of press freedom. If convicted, Assange could have been sentenced to 175 years in U.S. prison, which Timm calls a “ticking time bomb for press freedom rights.”

The reason I mention this is not a negative one or anything hostile, just the reason I suspect for not knowing what I am about to talk about (meaning it most likely wouldnt and didnt make news at all there) You are correct the former Australian governments at the start was pathetic. However the past 4 years and ESPECIALLY the past 18 months the government has been completely in the fight to get the US to end its crusade. He was one of 3 main issues in the last visit to the White House from the Australian PM. This included a letter hand delivered to Joe Biden that was written and signed by almost every single member of the current Australian Parliament from both major parties and independents. It was 95% plus with from memory only 2 or 3 not taking part. They also played a majorly part of this final achievement in bringing him home. I am glad to see from the footage of him boarding the plane that airport that it was an RAAF diplomatic aircraft (very luxurious inside, the same that Carrie's our PM and high level officials as opposed to other options available in the RAAF's fleet. This is fantastic moment for Australians, Julian's Family, All Journalist around the world (including the jelous ones) and ALL his amazing supporters and advocates from around the world!

Thank God! This protects journalism worldwide to a great extent. After 15 years of persecution and 12 of incarceration, first in exile in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, then in Belmarsh high security prison solitary confinement in the London area, where a UN Special Rapporteur on Torture concluded Assange had been tortured, he will finally be able to go home to his wife and children. His crime, exposing US Military crimes against humanity, and other crimes, which were crimes documentation was given to his organization, Wikileaks, for publication. The NY Times and other important news sources published Wikileaks information. This was a frontal attack on journalism. Terrified of being tortured, his legal team and supporters have been fighting his extradition for many years. This is such a relief. I hope nothing goes wrong in his stopover to sign papers.
