Troubleshoot And Refurbish A Zippo

A Zippo saved my father’s life. My dad had a pack of cigarettes rolled up in his t-shirt sleeve on one side and a Zippo rolled up in the other. During WWII my father was at his gun mount during a battle when he dropped his Zippo. He said for some reason he bent over to pick up the lighter. When he stood up the bulkhead behind him was gone. My uncle who was a shipmate of his saw what happened. If it weren’t for that Zippo my brother and I probably wouldn’t be here.

Great video. Thanks for doing this. I have a 1972 Zippo that's hard to light. I may try this. There's just something cool and right about Zippos. I don't even smoke, but I love my Zippos. I wish I had a good reason to carry and use one.

I’ve carried a Zippo all my life,and what I’ve always done after I filled my Zippo, is before I put it into the case, hold onto the felt and shake out the excess. Keeps from leaking in your pocket. My Dad had a black zippo from WWll that had Dan over size screw to cover one tube for the spark wheel, and one tube that held spare flints. I store mine under the felt pad. I used to light my oxy acetylene torch with it. I quit carrying mine when I quit smoking 23years ago.

My oldman, did weird things with Zippos. Screwdriver Lamp Cooking Stove Signaling Reflector. Handwarmer. Picking up chicks, with weird lighter tricks. Called Distractionary tactics. Also doubles as a reason to go to town for supplies. Because its always running out of fuel. When you need to vacate the unwanted guests, from aforesaid activities.

If you need a long flame (no need to keep a thumb on it) in seriously cold weather, there’s not a lot of pocketable alternatives.
