Mine did the same thing. Three Blinks. It is Also Marked on the Panel that you removed on the inside.

I'm liking my slab's radiant heating more and more. But, how does something like that get in there? Or is a matter of dust-like particles getting sucked into the fan's inlet area? I understand unplugging it (the IT guy in me has asked more people than I can count that question over the years), but do these things have power switches to turn them off to start with? Do you think this is something you should do every year at the start of the cold temps?

Yes, I think it's dust/wood particles in the air. It's not a bad idea to check every year. Radiant heating would be nice and I would prefer it over this convection heater.
