Furnace Gas Valve Not Opening - How to Fix It

If your furnace gas valve is not opening or opening but not lighting the gas, this video will show you how you can fix it. I go over the furnace gas valve troubleshooting step by step and explain everything you can do to try to get your gas valve to start working properly again and igniting the gas. The reason I don't go into gas pressure adjustment is because the gas pressure on a gas valve does not adjust itself. If your furnace randomly stopped working, it is very very unlikely that the gas pressures changed. Those only change when someone was messing with them. I also did not go over checking or testing the gas valve resistance. That is because testing the ohms on a gas valve solenoid is not an accurate way to determine whether a gas valve coil is good or not. It is much more effective to test the voltage going to it instead. If there is power going in but the valve is not opening, then the gas valve is likely bad and should be replaced.

Have a carrier 2008 ,40000 btu. All components work, Igniter works does come on but gas doesn't come on. With wires removed holds 26 volts for 8 seconds. When connected to valve and volt meter, votls flash for fraction of a second and then seem to kick out the relay. When voltage is supplied from another 24 volt source, gas valve opens and lights. Has power with no load, Soon as it's connected the value. Power from board seems to just click off. Any suggestions ? Thank you very much.😊

Here's another scenario for you (from personal experience). If the gas valve gets too cold it can tend to stick. For example if you go on holidays in the winter and set your thermostat really low (I was setting mine for 5 C / 41F) it can get cold enough that whatever lubricant is inside may get too gummy to allow the valve to move. After banging my head against the furnace for hours trying to figure out why it wasn't working (and watching all your videos on the subject!) I had an "ah ha!" moment and got a heat gun and warmed the valve up to a normal operating temperature and BINGO... working furnace! Thanks so much for these videos. Because of them I've extended the life of my furnace by several years, fixed it several times (new blower, new flame sensor, unclogged sensor lines) and I'm not afraid to rip it apart and put it back together in order to find out whats wrong with it. You've probably saved me hundreds of dollars over the last 5 years!

I dont comment on videos. But you’re seriously the man. Been tying to diagnose this thing for a week. 47 degrees in the house when i woke up this morning. But before this video, whenever i would put my multimeter on the gas valve wires, it would click open right away, i would read 24 v, and the burners would kick on, as if i were a crazy person imagining there was a problem. Little did i know i was just wiggling the loose connection with the multimeter probes… thanks so much!!!

It’s that time of year again to start your furnace PM’s . When it’s the first 40 degree day is NOT the time to find out the furnace doesn’t start. Here in NYC, we no longer have a neutral period between AC and heat. It’s either one at all times. Thanks again , Jay. Stay well 👍👍👍

Connector fitment problems are common in automotive circuits, too. A cheap tool that sometimes helps with that is an oxyacetylene tip cleaner, which has a set of abrasive probes of various size that can clean any oxidation on the contact surface. Often one can tweak the fitment by squeezing the female end of the connector tight so you don't have to jam something into the side. It's humbling to know that the most common problem with fitment is caused by the last tech, who stuck his multimeter probe into the female connector. I like your technique where any probing is done on the outside in, so the probe would make fitment tighter, rather than looser. A drag test later verifies a good mechanical connection.

Great video ! - my gas valve was not opening so to test it I took direct power from the primary transformer (24V AC) and connected it to the gas valve just to make sure mechanically it was opening and closing when powered/unpowered. It was.... therefore checking the voltage it was apparent that the valve was NOT getting 24V from the control board at the appropriate time. I changed out the control board and that fixed it saving hundreds of dollars.. Now I wish I knew what relay (I am assuming it is a power relay on the board) on the control board was the problem for I really would like to learn more about the next level of repair - replacing a single $5 relay in this case instead of the whole board. That may be more complicated to undertake but I sure would like to learn. There are 3 Zettler relays AZ942H-1C-18DT that I am guessing it is one of. The back of the board is super tight and several contacts... oh well have wait to learn more about that approach.
@DayClanTribe
@DayClanTribe 7 күн бұрын
yes, I've replaced the relay on the board for $2.50. It's a smaller relay. I've replaced the larger as well for the blower motor. they're not hard to trace. Use the schematic on the back of the door and then look closely at the board for the trace to the relay.
@condor5635
@condor5635 7 күн бұрын
@ I guess tracing it to define which one is the fuel valve relay that was the issue. Do you just trace that using your multimeter? I’m assuming one of the three or four are dedicated to the fuel valve.
@DayClanTribe
@DayClanTribe 7 күн бұрын
@@condor5635 When you check the schematic you'll see the color of wire coming from the gas valve to the board through the plug. Then you can use an ohm meter from that terminal onto the board or just look at the visual trace. Sometimes you have to hold the board up to the light to see through it, it depends if the trace is on the surface or sandwiched between layers.

43 years experience and I tell all new techs, if you can get a stuck closed valve to open by tapping it, it can also get stuck in the OPEN position when the call for heat expires, allowing gas to continue to flow. NEVER LEAVE A FURNACE OPERATIONAL IF THAT OCCURS. Shut the gas supply and get a new valve. Forget the lawsuit. You could be criminally charged if there is a tragedy. Your customer would rather be cold than dead.

I'll share my furnace adventure from this past week. Simply put, its a gas furnace that would not ignite and heat the house. The thermostat would click to activate the start sequence. The "fan" that draws in air from the outside and blows the exhaust to the outside would turn on. But nothing would happen after that. Im not that handy, so after checking the ignitor...which looked good...i called the hvac repairman. He came out, checked stuff out, and thought the module/part that senses airflow might be the problem (not the gas regulator). He said there's a membrane in that module that may fail over time. So he replaced that part. But still it was a no- go. After he called a peer for other suggestions, he blew air from a tank canister into the exhaust pipe opening where it internally connects with the exhaust fan. (I know I'm not using correct terminology, but hopefully you can follow along.). Voila...it worked. He speculates spiders might have built webs that blocked that air flow enough to cause the problem. The spiders cost me almost $300 in labor.

GREAT videos !!! .... quick question. I'm a maintenance tech at a large apartment property. We have found many times instead of replacing the entire gas valve that we are able to just replace the electronic ( coil ) part. What are your thoughts on this ?? We've had 100 % success rate so far. Thanks !!
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 3 ай бұрын
I think that's great! Where I worked we were always taught to replace the whole gas valve, supposedly for safety reasons but I'm thinking it's mainly because that makes more money and it's easier to order a whole gas valve instead of tracking down the coil. If it's the electronic part of the gas valve that is failing, I think it's great that you are only replacing the coils. Personally I applaud that!

So have another trouble shoot option. Turn gas shut off off leave gas valve on turn thermostat off and turn on the power use jumper from r on the board and a jumper from c on the board and put one on each side of the gas valve to see if it clicks. (Be careful don’t die) 😅 I was getting a code that said gas was off while flam was lit kind of code and I used that test to make sure it wasn’t sticking and it wasn’t found that the furnace hoses needed to be cleared. Aka Pressure switch was kicking off the gas valve. Also would like to learn how to trouble shoot smart valves if possible.

The On/Off Switch on the front of the Gas Valve can get dirty. This prevents the gas valve solenoid switch from working when 24Vac applied (mine did). Turn off power and gas to furnace first. Check resistance between C and M spades on valve with connector removed. It should be OL in OFF and 50k Ohms to 25m Ohms in ON. If only reading OL then time to clean. Use electric contact cleaner sprayed into the switch while moving the switch up and down it. Retest with meter.

Hi Jay, Everything on you video sounds very straight forward. But in my case, the gas value is not opening, the red LED light is solid on (so no error code), and when I check the voltage to the gas value and turn the thermostat on, it actually shows 8 volts before the thermostat is turned on and zero once the furnace is going through its cycle. And it goes back to 8 volts when the igniter turns back off. Does that make sense?
@hvac24

Hey Jay, I had a similiar problem, turns out it was the gas valve. I originally thought it was a pressure switch issue because the error code was “low pressure switch failed open during trial for ignition”. Turns out there was nothing wrong with the switch or the exhaust , drain , tubes, etc . I’m just not sure why some furnaces do that where it gives you an error code , but it is something completely different. I’m still new into service but I guess you learn from mistakes ! It’s best to go by sequence of operation right ? Thanks Jay

The furnace board is still just a dumb dumb board pre-designed to "help" guide us in the right direction with error codes based on electrical faults at certain moments while running and/or starting/stopping. Not all scenario's are perfectly engineered into the circuitry to catch the fault perfectly and aim it directly at the exact part. This is obvious when you go over many manufacturers error codes and the big "LIST" of possible reasons for the fault you need to then further narrow down.

@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 3 ай бұрын
Is the control board blinking any error codes? From what you described, it could be a loose connection, bad transformer, or a bad control board. 1. Try wiggling the wire connectors as you are testing the voltage. Does that change the readings? 2. Test the secondary side of the transformer, how many volts is it outputting? If not 24-28v, then it's a bad transformer. (also verify that it is getting 120v going into it) 3. If you can't find any loose connections and the transformer is outputting proper voltage, then it's likely a bad control board?

I had that same condition blower comes on, igniter lights up but no gas is delivered. Reason was the burner tube end were rusted preventing the gas to spread evenly across tubes. One tip I have for Goodman furnaces. They have a silly design where the wire the condensate pressure switch in line with the gas valve common. This will not throw a pressure switch code and the ignitor will still come on like everything is ok even if the switch is open for whatever reason

you need to use a man sized slotted screwdriver. Not some little wimpy housewife one for tiny screws. A nice big one that fills the entire brass head of the slot. Then you press in hard, like a man, and crack them loose... And if you don't have a manometer available to check and confirm those pressures, then you might as well leave them rightfully alone and not mess with the pressures at all.

I was using my gas fireplace to heat my home until a couple weeks ago. I hadn't noticed an issue until during the day it seem like the heat wasn't coming on and my sister noticed it for the holiday. So I put the fireplace back on. Saw a status code 10 retry/ recycle delay on my boiler. So i reset the boiler and raise the temp on the thermostat since it was now detecting the heat from the fireplace in the next room. It seem to work but then I lowered the thermostat as it was too hot and turned off the fireplace. Well yesterday it did the same thing again. So I go check the pilot light and it's lighting when the call for heat is given, I hear the click from the gas valve but no burners were lighting. I started checking for loose wires as that has happened in the past but didn't see any. I left the boiler on and it then got the 62 error soft lock out, max retry exceeded. So that's when I started looking on YTU, KZbin university. I was not thinking it's the gas supply or the valve as the pilot light was coming on. But I stumbled across a few videos but this one was the most helpful. I wanted to say thank you as I tapped on the gas valve when I heard the click and after a couple times I saw the burners light up. The heat has been on ever since, which is a full day. I'm hoping the valve is unstuck and working again. After watching the order of operation video, which I know is different as I have a boiler but it was still helpful as I learned few things. Plus I was then looking more at the gas valve and can see there is a separate gas line from the valve that goes to the pilot, so I'm guessing it's not getting stuck close like the main part of the valve. I was going to clean the burners thinking that was the issue, which I'm sure it's needed. But with the heat back on I'll wait and not mess with it till after winter. I suscribed as the few videos I've watched of yours, I enjoy the info. I think I may have watched one of yours when I was working on my hot water heater few months ago, which I did get working but then went out again and then replaced it. You have great content and very informative. Thanks and congratulations 😊 as you now have a new subscriber. Happy holidays.

This video has some problems , testing the gas valve disconnected is a bad idea . If the board is bad it can still send 24 volts but if the contacts are bad on the board solenoid or the pressure switch then the voltage will drop when connected to the valve showing a problem but not when the valve is disconnected , you have probly caused thousands or people to go buy a gas valve they didnt need . usually the pressure switch is the culprit , any thing over 2ohms of resistant's will drop the voltage below the valves operational threshold
