My 2003 VTX 1800 has been sitting in my garage for over 1 year. I was fearful that the bike was going to be sold as "Not running" because I am not a mechanic and money is real scarce. I watched your video, replaced both 30a fuses, put a new battery and gas in the bike, and the !@#$ is now running! Thank you X 10. Now I have to clean and wax it, and of course get on the road. I'm having a damn good week bro.

Hi John, Beautiful day in New Jersey today and went for a long ride. Got home and the kill switch went screwy on me. I tried restarting the bike, lights, fuel pump, no cranks. Im no mechanic but your video was so easy to follow, I have confirmed that I have a bad solenoid, which I will get my replacement from Partzilla. I agree with the previous guy that this is EACTLY what I needed.Thank you so much for being so thorough and crystal clear about the process One weird footnote about my situation is that I’ve got a 1984V 65 magna that normally wasn’t having any problem except after the bike fell over and I finally got it standing up. It kind of started but ultimately just completely died and now I have no electrical. I’m not sure what the correlation can be from falling over and loss of electrical.
@chuckbrodd93452 жыл бұрын
Not sure if an '84 would have a bank angle sensor, but the VTX in this video does. Its a mechanical switch with a rocker inside. When the bike leans past a certain degree (42.5° on the VTX in the video) the bike shuts off for safety. Sometimes that Bank angle sensor goes bad or gets fouled and the bike won't start. Likely not the issue in your '84, but I don't know much about the Magnas. I had an '83 Magna 750, but I honestly never worked on it before I sold it to buy the VTX1800.

Very nice presentation Brochacho!! My bike tried to leave me stranded yesterday and went completely out of electricity after I flipped the switch. I had no idea what to do so I went inside the side panels and started moving wires around and when I was about to give up I gave it one more shot and it came on so there must be a short or something. I got to work with it again today but it started sputtering just when I got to work so im hoping I get home. maybe those fuses were getting worn or may be oxidized who knows. when I figure it out I'll let you know.

very valuable information on starting issues. I actually had to deal with that problem on mine, except it was a physical problem. The starter button pushed in and broke, it didn't come back out, and it didn't start the bike. I didn't think to use the jumper, but luckily we were able to get the bike going because we were on a hill. Rolling start got it going. Wish I would have thought about the jumper wire though...LOL. So were you jumping from the actual red battery lead to the hot wire on the solenoid? it was hard to see with the hand placement, but it makes sense that it would work.

Great video. I’ve had my vtx1800 for 10 year and I was always under the impression that you never turn on/off the switch by the push to start button unless you had to kill the engine in an emergency.
@spanky5225 жыл бұрын
You don't need any tools to check a fuze. Just pull it out and you can see if it's blown or not. The starter relay is an easy fix, IF you are getting power to it, and it doesn't work, you can replace it with one from just about any small engine repair shop or automotive supply store. Other than that, it can also be the starter switch itself, which is another common problem when the bike gets older. They get corroded or can just plain wear out the connections.

Very nice run through of these switch/relay checks. Thank you. One thing I would have wondered when the main fuse was blown is 'What caused the main fuse to blow?' Because that's my problem. The bike ('05 VTX1800) will start and run, but if I shut it off and turn the key back on and it blows the fuse you mentioned. If I wait a few hours I can start it again (with a new fuse in place), but if I shut it off and turn it back on - 'pop' goes the fuse again. When I ran across my blown fuse, I thought I was on easy street (just like in the video), but my issue was not solved with a simple fuse replacement. I don't really expect anyone to answer this. It's just another non-start issue that may arise. It probably isn't as easy to diagnose though. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hey John, I'm working on the same bike I believe. 2005 Honda VTX 1800. I replaced the battery as well as the starter switch (kill switch & push start assy) .... When put my test light on the battery side of the solenoid (terminal) it lights up... When I put it on the starter side post it does not light up (not even when I hit the push start) ... However... when I put it on the yellow wire (starter side) and hit the push start that lights up... I cannot get the bike to start unless I run a screw driver across the solenoid. ** If I jump the wires it will NOT turn over... *** My guess is that it is in the solenoid but I am guessing at this point. Let me know what you think. Thanks, John Wheeler

I have a question 🙋🏽 about a switch start button that burned out while troubleshooting a 2003 buell blast 500 , it turns out that the throttle cable inside the assembly got out of the track and made contact with either start or killed switch connection inside. I found out their was a problems with the control switch because the ignition fuse 7.5a kept burning out. I placed a 10a fuse to prolonged it a little longer and again it popped the fuse, then I went up to 30a, at which point the kill start switch assembly started to smoke , I want to test them connection, your video helped me start that process later today. My question is, other then the wiring, could I have caused other parts of the systems to burn out or fail while fixing the problem? I am waiting on a replacement kill start switch along with starter reply and system reply to come in, I also purchased the main wiring harness too... Thank you for the great walk through on that last video I saw

The diode test was good. My rectifier was giving noting. So, I purchased a new rectifier $55 plus shipping $77 and it's testing good but my system is still not charging. Today, I ordered a diode three way assembly $10. What am I missing? My bike is a 2006 Honda 1300c VTX.

Sounds like you have covered most of the components. When your bike is running, what is the voltage at your battery? If it gets to this point, sometimes the easiest way is to start at one end and test the wires all the way down the system. Figure out where the break in voltage is.

Thanks for the video, great job. Question? I have a 1300 vtx. About to get into trying to find out why it just decides to shut down while riding for no reason. When it does happen, you need to sit there for awhile to wait to restart. It has gotten really bad to a point where it is just happening a lot and can no longer trust it. Any tips on where I should start looking? I am thinking maybe a fuel relay, or yes even the fuel pump, but not ignoring that it could be wiring in the kill switch / starter. Appreciate any comments please. Thanks a lot.

Hi, Did you get the problem fixed? My 07 has been having the same issue. Thanks
@kmarche100 Жыл бұрын
@@MohammadKhan-eg5dz So I went through everything on this bike. but I am pretty sure it was a vacuum leak. The bike was painted a year earlier and the petcock for one was really loose, I think it wasn't tightened proper, and over time loosened of. Possible leak. Tightened up a few things a little better and all seemed to have cured itself. If you suspect a vacuum leak, spray some carb cleaner around the carb, example, carb boot, vacuum lines from carb, etc while its running. If you got a leak, your bike will tell you when she starts to idle rough.
@MohammadKhan-eg5dz Жыл бұрын
@@kmarche100 Hi, I checked the fuel line from carb to the petcock and it was good then I lightly tapped under the float bowl, and it worked. Bike started and idled for about 10 minutes, and it cut off again. I tried few times to restart, and it didn't start then I slightly opened the choke and bike started. With the choke slightly opened I rode about 60 miles and had zero issues. Now if I close the choke the bike won't start. I properly adjusted the air/fuel ratio and it's about at 2 turns and I did try 2.5 & 3 turns to eliminate the need for choke but the bike wouldn't start. I had a similar problem before when I purchased the bike it didn't start/run without the choke being slightly open but after I cleaned the carb/jets it ran fine for about 50-60 miles and then I ran into this float problem. Is it time to get the bigger jets now since the bike won't run without the choke? Is it bad for the bike to run with the choke open? I'm truly thankful for your help & support. Best Regards

In my case today, 04 1300c, I had a similar experience where the bike wouldn't start. Battery good. I was able to get it started after a few attempts. I got it home and started measuring and checking. The headlight wasn't coming on with key on either. So finally, I just wiggled the start button sideways a bit and on came the headlight. I knew the switch was making poor contact. Tomorrow I plan to try to clean the start and the emergency kill switch with contact cleaner spray, if I can can get access to the internal switch contacts. I did the same thing with the turn signal switch several months ago.

Good guide. BUT this happened to me: The starter solenoid have 2 nuts for each pole. The upper nut is for securing the cables. But the nuts on the BOTTOM of the poles actually holds and aligns the connecting copper plates inside the solenoid. I once made an error and loosened the 2 BOTTOM nuts on the solenoid while installing a second horn. Without me realizing what had happened after installing the horn, the solenoid would "click/start" intermittently. The copper plates inside the solenoid had been misaligned and had made bad contact because I fiddled with the nuts on the outside securing them. After taking the solenoid apart there was melted copper, sooting and obvious faults. I replaced the solenoid WITHOUT touching the two bottom nuts. Just the upper 2 for the cables :)

Hi there. I have 2016 Pagsta Bobber. I live in Lansing, MI. Around here no one knows working on this engine. I was trying to figure out what was wrong with my motorcycle and the engine is turning over but not firing up. What do you think would be the problem?

Not familiar with the brand, but all motors work the same. Is the plug getting spark?

Partzilla, Great video. I have a question for you. I have a similar problem you were speaking about in this video. I turn my VTX 1800R on and hit the start switch, it tries to start but never turns over enough to fire it up. Then it continues to try but makes no noise then slowly tries to crank with no joy. Any recommendations.

Have you load tested your battery?
@chrisellis40497 жыл бұрын
Not yet. Is that just taking off the seat and seeing what the volts its reading?
@chrisellis40497 жыл бұрын
I keep it in the garage and have a trickle charge system hooked up to it. Are you referring to taking the seat off and seeing what the battery is reading when I try and start?
@chrisellis40497 жыл бұрын
I just plugged it back into the trickle charge and let it sit for about 5 mins and it started right up. I just replaced the battery about a year ago. I guess I will have to follow your other video to see what is causing the battery to not maintain, unless you have any other suggestions Chris

I did load test and it is 12.5 vdc prior to and drops to 9vdc when i try and start. Guessing new battery needed.

We have a 2005 VTX 1800. It sat for several years. The battery was replaced and the lights came on and the engine turned, but the engine didn't fire. Fresh fuel was in the tank and the kill switch was in the on position. Ideas given that it sat for a few years in a shed? Its was dusty and I don't think it was fired up many years....It was my Dad's and he passed away.

Does the fuel pump prime when you turn the key on? If not, check the fuses and wiring to the pump. Worst case, it might need a new fuel pump.

Help....my battery tested good, my terminals are clean and the starter does engage sometimes, but its a weak crank if at all. Its either that starter solenoid, or the starter itself is my guess. Where is the starter location? I haven't checked the terminal there yet. is it behind the cover where the water pump is> How hard to replace starter? Thanks!

Load test the battery. Check all connections for corrosion.

Hi there, I have a question. Sometimes my bike won't start, all I hear is a clicking sound, then I tap it with my hand and sometimes it will start. But sometimes I have to tap/slap it a few more times for it to start. It seems to happen only when it's been sitting around for awhile. For example, when it sits in the garage for one day or when I went to lunch with a friend, a few hours after lunch it won't start. Also, when I put it on the charger it starts right up. Thank you for your advice.

I have 2004 1300vtx. Just had, no start condition, similar. New battery. Wet condition, weak lights, try starting and lights go dead. After several tries everything came back. Could that be a water short in the fuses?
@PartzillaParts5 жыл бұрын
Could be a water short in multiple places, not just the fuse.

@@PartzillaParts , Found issues with water drainage from mc cover. Definitely a frustrating condition. Maybe I'll build that shed.

I have a question not connected directly to Troubleshooting a Motorcycle that Won’t Start, but I like the spark plug covers which can be seen in video. Do you know the brand of it, please? Thank you.

Got the bike second hand, someone else asked this too. No brand marking. Not sure what company it is. They look good though!

Hi, thanks for your answer. I made some investigation and I believe it's Arlen Ness. Unfortunately, they don't produce it any more :-(

Hello. My problem is, i put the key into the ignition, it turns half way but will not fully engage! Yes, it is the right key. i removed the seat and battery. Is there a kill switch on that?
