Here I tear down some 24v APC battery packs, test each of the batteries and take the good ones to make a single good pack.

Did your used 1300’s last long for you??

With 2 minutes that gives you time to turn it off is more than enough but when you pay for an Ups like that you demand something more for the money you paid I have an old APC Back RS 800 that works well with non-original generic batteries

The UPS puts out a modified square wave and may not "measure" correctly on some meters. My Fluke measures correctly.
@michaelroberson7055

The issue is your digital multimeter. The Sherry DM6400 is not a true RMS meter, Root Mean Squared. The APC XS1300 outputs a "Stepped approximation to a sine wave", from the product data sheet. You need a true RMS (tRMS) meter to accurately measure the voltage. There are true sine wave battery backups but this unit is not one. It's good enough for standard office equipment power backup.

Thanks for the video; 1 and 2! Both of my batteries aren't very old, but I'm only getting a 13.48 on my multimeter from the jumper (on both batteries.) I'll pursue your troubleshoot and hopefully it gets me back in business. I'll let you know.
@experiment86
@experiment86 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah if you're getting only 13.48v with the batteries still in series, then your batteries are toast. You should be getting around 24v.

Smart enough to know that low voltage will heat appliances/electronics up and destroy them in a short time. 107 is low, 100 is awful. You need at least 108 volts for marginally safe op. Your's is still bad. Mine is too

Wow part 2 is especially eye opening! Have had so many battery issues with these things and wondering if it’s the unit or the battery so came on to KZbin. My xs 1500 batteries seem to die fast and my 1300 battery actually started to bust out of it’s plastic (lots of warping). Where did you buy the bad replacent battery? The only battery that has lasted longer (since 2017) came from B&H in NY. Wondering because so many picky professionals shop there if they have better stock. Not sure if that’s a coincidence tho?

I get my batteries from a local place to save on shipping. They mostly sell Duracell brand. I've had good luck with them. A couple got a little swollen when I abused them.

I wonder if you had let your pair of “good batteries” go through a full charge (48 hrs or so) and repeat your test.

wow this us model looks quite crap , i have a 1000va model that does 600w , 220v . (br1000g-in) and the internal circuit is much more beefy . there is double the transistor before that pulse transformer and the halfbridge heatsink is lot larger. also at 220v the current is lower but still all the outputs are on finned heatsink. diodes and outpuit H bridge. i guess much of it has to do with the external battery option in this one. i got this for 50$ with original battery and the original apc 9ah 24v battery , the seller who sold me was a miner and crypto crashed at that time so he was selling his rigs to recover the loss . it was 1yr old at that time and had another year of warranty left !

So you couldn’t use that unit just as a inverter with a 12 volt battery? But could be used as a inverter if you have the 24 volts ?
@experiment86
@experiment86 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, I suppose you could. It's designed for 24v so you'd need two 12v in series but yeah that should work.

I may just be too used to lithium batteries but even the first battery seemed to be crap by how much the voltage sagged with just a computer fan
@experiment86
@experiment86 4 жыл бұрын
It did sag a good bit but that fan puts a 3amp load on the battery. I'd like to test a comparable lithium with the same fan.

I have the same problem, that the ups turn off, when I disconnect the power supply. If I understood correctly (my English is not good) is that the damaged batteries drain faster than the good ones?
@experiment86
@experiment86 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, once one battery is bad the pair is pretty much worthless and they will drain very fast.

Also meant to ask, how long did your custom / salvaged battery work? Is it still working?
@experiment86
@experiment86 Жыл бұрын
The salvaged batteries worked for a while but I had to swap some fresh ones in a few months later.

The salvaged batteries had been sitting for a while off the charger... probably longer than they should have.

@@experiment86 this post was so helpful, I assumed I had bad backup units before watching this. I ended up buying a new battery for one as a test on Black Friday and it’s been working so far! I dont have the gear to pull the new battery apart and test it but I’m tempted!

Hard to say without being able to work on it. If it's actually putting out voltage to charge the battery pack then I would check to see if it holds a load after you cut off AC power. Maybe it's just not sensing the charge voltage.

Sorry but you will probably be a Ferrari mechanic and not an electrician? The fact that there is a problem one battery from battery pack is probably one of the first things that a person solves and does not disassemble the backup power supply.This zero battery pack from APC or other noname 3-5years battery packs. I have in my APC 10 years waranty battery FIAMM 12FGHL34 !!! The best option. Look up for better types of 12volt 9Ah battery.
@LA-Creative
@LA-Creative Жыл бұрын
Sure if the batteries were old but honestly, most people assume that APC would not sell you bad replacement batteries. I’m shocked, personally. And also it voids the warranty to open them up. Also instead of investigating most people would just complain to APC and ask for an refund (always wondering it it was their unit or the battery) but I’m so glad he posted this on the web for the world to see. 👏 #batterygate #apcgate
