Please give me your feedback on this video. I'd love to know what you think about my paints. Am I mixing any of these correctly? Too thick, too thin, just not doing it right at all?
I'm a pouring addict but I need to get a greater success rate!
All comments and advice very readily received, criticisms and all :-)

I think you're right, Deby. Your white might be a bit thin. Annemarie says the paint should run off the stick in a stream, like honey. Have you tried torching it before tilting it to increase the size of the cells? Other than the sides being too thin, your little canvas turned out BEAUTIFUL after you torched it! I was CHEERING for you! :-)

I know! Here I was saying how much I was struggling and then would you believe it! It turned out really pretty for once. I just need to keep trying, but I understand the frustrations everyone has - I have them too, and just wanted to voice it for all us newbies out there...

A base coat will solve your paint not sticking to the canvas. I usually make sure it has 2 coats of gesso (one horizontal and one vertical to mimic canvas texture). The other thing I do is when I am mixing up my paints i also mix up a base coat or pillow at the same time. I make it a tad thinner than the mix for my paints so that my paints can easily glide over it. When I started doing those 2 things it litterally SOLVED my problem with the canvas/panel or board showing through or coming off and having bald spots. So consider trying these things, they add a bit more time onto the entire process but it's WELL worth the results and benefits. Your base coat will also help you keep your pattern /composition and have more control when you tilt and what not. BTW I think your little pour turned out gorgeous and I really LOVE the final product. I am going to give a go at these colors in this order!

Hi' Debby. Deb T here. I so understand your frustration. I've poured about thirty canvases and have only had two that I would consider keeping. Bloody silicone - I have about four different ones in the garage and my husband says our garage doors will be fine for lubricant for the next thirty years LOL. I love swiping too as I always get great results. I am going to keep trying also because I'm determined to get this right but not every day anymore. I'm spending grocery money on tubes of paint and getting slightly obsessed and then very frustrated. I love watching your videos. I also enjoy Annemarie and Lily. You girls are my yoga - I sit down with a cupa and watch you all most days. Keep up the good work. Cheers, Deb

Pintrest have made it looks so easy, I've tried everything from alcohol, lube, wd40 washing up liquid, just ordered some silicone which says it's for acrylic painting..... I've yet to produce one cell and have had a lovely bonfire with 9 million years canvases..... Someone help me. Some people simply use just the paint! How's that possible 🙆

Man, you are NOT alone!! I have been working out of my master bathroom for a few months so kind of like a makeshift situation waiting for a room in our house to be closed in with the door to keep the kitty cats out. The first two weeks I was in there I felt like although I had all the space all the materials that my pours were just going horrible. So one day I thought to myself well it seems like the painting gods aren’t with me. I chuckled to myself and that made me feel a little bit better. But I think I have my consistency right, i use 2:1 floteral/ paint. All kinds of paints, from ready to pour to Amsterdam paints, then of course some craft paints LOL. Anyway I can’t figure out why some days it works out and some days not I feel like I’m not doing anything different on the days it works out versus not. trust me I’ve thought and thought on it!

Deby, all this fuss over cells. I love the way cells look in pour paintings but can't seem to get them regularly either. That being said, cells don't make or break a painting, at least not for me. I've created some lovely paintings with little to no cells. I just love the way the paint flows across a canvas, blending colors and forming beautiful patterns, curves, lines and shapes. I seems to calm me like nothing else, second only to the beauty of the ocean. Paint. Create. Above all, enjoy bringing beauty to life.

Hey Deby! I love your videos and have really enjoyed your swiping techniques they have worked wonders for me. My recipe is 2 parts flotrol 1 part paint 1 part water. I also mix everything by weight with a scale and it seems to be consistent every time with really great looking cells! It looks like your tray has more cells because you are pouring most of your paint off. That also removes the drop of silicone you added. When you tilt your canvas and get to a corner, bring your paint back to the middle before you go for another corner, etc. Also heat creates a reaction that causes silicone to rise to the top. So torching after pouring and before you tilt will help the silicone come up to the surface.. Just give it a minute or two to see what comes up. I have had success using 60% Elmers Glue All, 30% water and 10% floetrol. I mix it in a squeeze bottle for ease with use. I hope some of these ideas help!

Yes, possibly. These are very varied, not one the same even with consistent measure. 😄 but thank heavens they are also forgiving so play around with some canvases you just scrape off as best you can. I say, try it. When it comes to this type of art, I have to say, there’s no wrong combo, just combos that need tweaking . It’s a bit harder to learn than I expected. ALSO, density, density, density. Mix some thicker (heavier) than others (thin ) Go for it !!! ☮️💟&🦄’s

For sure it's great fun experimenting . I've tried different brands of paint - various silicones (currently using 100% treadmill) and like yourself, tried making the paint thin thicker etc... This afternoon I'm trying out doing 3 cup straight pours onto a canvas so hopefully don't need to move around the painting too much and keep the original shapes as they are poured!! Hope we both get the happy endings we're after lol 😉😏

I defiantly think its important that all your paints are the same consistency. I also think torching before you tilt might help you get big cells since they will stretch as you move the canvas. I am sure you have seen it but Annemarie's video called cells 100 percent guaranteed has allot of helpful information about when and how to add the silicone. I wonder if that has more too do with it. I was using one silicone with no luck and switched to one that was hundred percent silicone and it made all the difference.

Deb, I had this same problem today. the paint was sliding off the sides of the canvas and you could see the canvas right on the corners and edge. I mixed lots of colors today, added silicone to each of them, and poured many canvases for hours with that same paint. I've heard from Annemarie Ridderhof's videos that when silicone is added to the paint, it needs to be used fairly quickly. I usually mix paint for each canvas but got carried away today. also, it sure looked like your paint was too thin. treadmill silicone makes cells really fast. also, I've been using floetrol, paint, & silicone....and getting lots & lots of cells...big & little ones.

I had a terrible day today. Mixed and poured all day. It was all rubbish. Used floetrol as my PM, and also tried with PVA for a change. Treadmill silicone or silicone spray. Thicker paints, less Floetrol, flip cups/dirty pours, pouring from high/pouring low into the cup. Stirring in silicone well/barely. More/less silicone. Any cells just keep dissolving, if they even form to start with. Bah - wanted to actually throw paint by the end of the day. Maybe that would have fixed it! I'm usually good at following instructions and learning, but this has almost got me beat!

That is beautiful! You have a very small canvas which requires a very tiny cell strucrure!The only thing I see is one or two colors may be just a bit thin. Also, most pours have the paint poured down the side rather than being placed in the center of the cup.

It's consistency of each color. I've been dealing with these issues also. They all need to be the same thicknes becuz if one is thick and one is runny they will mix differently in the cup. I believe in this video your colors are too thin. When the paint is thin it doesn't hold the design. Thicker helps hold the design and keep colors separate.

I think you need to use 1 part paint and 2 parts floetrol and water to just get the right consistency. From my (very few) experiences, a steady stream off the stick feels right and I usually mix my whites thinner than the rest so it moves easily. I’m no expert, and I am a rookie, but just a suggestion :)

Yes! Different colors do need different mixes. I was wondering when that would be acknowledged! My oranges seem to need twice the water to reach the right thickness as my blues. If the paints are too thick, you are unlikely to get big cells...or any cells. Keep up the good work! Personally, I find getting the consistency I want is the hardest part of preparing my paints for pouring. Maybe I'm just a dummy. I know Winsor & Newton makes lower priced acrylic mediums than their artist grade. Might be worth looking into.

50-50 Floetrol/PVA glue as a pouring medium. Your paints should pour off the stick like warm honey. Ridderhof, and Acrylic Waterfall are good folks to watch. You should have more pouring medium to paint in your cup, 1 part paint 2 parts pouring medium, and a little distilled water if necessary. What kind of paint are you using? Some are notoriously troublesome.
@franceswilcock2889
@franceswilcock2889 7 жыл бұрын
I think this is very attractive. But I see you only add floetrol, which encourages flow because it lowers the viscosity of the paint. Perhaps you could add pouring medium to get a better more creamy flow - or glue if you cant get PM. This would give more structural integrity. Also I think it best to use good quality paint - DK what you use - but tube paint seems to have a better consistency - creamier than ordinary craft paint. I'm enjoying your experiments though. 🙂
@AcrylicPouring
@AcrylicPouring 7 жыл бұрын
I'm using the big bottles of economy paint so far, and perhaps they don't work so well with the Floetrol. As you say, too thin, even if the consistency was right, the floetrol makes the paint flow and move, even when it is drying and cells can all apart. I will certainly hunt down a big jug of glue and give that a try. Thanks for the feedback.

Seems to me that your paints are way too thin. When they mix together easily, it's because they are too thin. When you pour it off of the stick make sure you at least have a steady stream before it goes to dripping. No drips or blobs when you first pour it off. I have a few videos coming up about this soon. Haven't got a chance to edit them all. Lol. But it's cute! Hope this helps.

Mixin Madness I agree it's too thin. But I don't think it's just how thin it is but also why is it so thin? Are you using a lot of water? What are your ratios? The more water you have in each paint the more likely it is to blend with the other paint. It's the medium that keep them separated. I use 1 part Floetrol + 1 water + 4 paint. Also don't stir the silicone very much.
@AcrylicPouring
@AcrylicPouring 7 жыл бұрын
I'm using 1 tbsp of paint to a half tbsp of Floetrol (so 50% of my paint volume) and then about a 1tsp of water (about 30% of my paint volume). Maybe I need more paint then Sherry to get it more like yours, although then I think it may be too thick to pour. I'll try it. Thanks,

I'm using Art Alternatives and Blick Acrylics - the larger economy bottles. That's pretty much all I can get here other than the Americana - but those are so thin already that a 2oz bottle really doesn't go very far and its so expensive when you are uncertain of the results. I wanted to let you know that I am a beginner as well I do get lots of cells in my painting however everything that I have ever seen about acrylic pouring has stated that you should use at least a two-to-one ratio of floetrol to paint especially depending on how fix to paint it. If you are using liquitex basic it is a very 16th and you may need to use three or even four parts floetrol the paint and then just add a little bit of water here and there until you reach the consistency honey dripping off your sticks. For me I get the most cells when I'm dripping the paint off my stick and it creates a mound on top of a mound or a little Trail in the paint and then disappears within about 3 seconds. Also if you're stirring too much after you add the silicone you will lose the silicone you only want to stir it a few times gently and you'll see streams of silicone sitting on top of your pants that's when you know that it's mixed properly. So give that a try and let me know how it goes. It's definitely it's definitely a trial and error Hobby. I would say probably my first seven painting I repainted over top of them because I was not happy with the outcome however now I have several that people want to purchase and I've only been doing this for about a month keep it up and you'll find what works for you don't lose faith!

Too much Floetrol...you need to use paint, pouring medium, a bit of Floetrol and a bit of water. Just using Floetrol as pouring medium makes "ugly" cells

Oh dear. I have some pouring medium on order from overseas but at $50 a bottle by the time it arrives, I won't be able to afford to paint if it really is essential :-( I would love to see some of your work. Do you have a website?

Hi Deby, I know your trouble. When I started I only got a few tiny cells. When I started using floetrol I got the first small cells, but nothing I'd like to go with. Than I changed my silikon and made the paint thicker and tada got beautiful big cells with 3D look. Much earlier then Annemarie R. did. The key was the brand of silikon. Here in Germany they don't tell you how much of it is in the can. This change form WD 40 silikonspray to a cheep housebrand of our local hardwarestore did the trick. Are you able to get another silikonspray? Maybe this will help? What I can see is your paint is little runny couse the canvas shows through on the sides. Greetings from germany.

Thank you so much for all the tips and feedback. I've just bought some of that treadmill oil so I can be sure of the quality, although in the pours I did yesterday it didn't seem to help. I'm still working on the right consistency! I really do think that all paint brands are different too, we need to find what works best with ours.

I quite agree - the silicone is the problem. I've tried so many different labels, both the oil in bottles and the sprays. And there's no info of how much silicone there is in the spray bottles. I still have a lot of experiementing to do but so far the best results have been using dimethicone (?) - argon oil - found in hair products. It's all trial and error and quite a bit of luck.

Yes, thicken up your paint to where its a stream like honey and not watery drips. But your painting was quite nice!

Yes that was a surprise in the end. Better than expected for once. I think I find it hard to distinguish between the drips that mean its too thick and the drips that means its too thin. All my paints turn out slightly different. But I'm not giving up!

Yes your paint is a little bit to thin. Also, you may be stirring your silicone into the paint to much. You don't want to stir it a bunch because it seems to make smaller cells when you break it down a bunch by stirring a lot. Try stirring in the silicone a little less.

I have, many of them. She always seems to have very thin paint that she pours about like crazy and then cells just keep popping over time. My early experiments with thin paint just created muddy stuff when all the colors mixed. I wonder if it is all dependant on your brands?

Bunsen your canvas before you start tilting it. The cells should come up beautifully after that

Your paint is too thin - mix 1 part paint to 2 parts floetrol - add very little water if needed

You're paint is too thin and also too much floetrol. What you should do is torch before you tilt.

Ah, too much Floetrol? So I should use more water instead of the Floetrol. I'm just wary because Annemarie always warns us not to water down the paint too much or it will fall apart. But you are right, the Floetrol can make the paint more 'flowy' and perhaps that inhibits the cells..

Deby sorry but do NOT use more water - it's what breaks down the paint bond which is what makes them blend.

Deby at Acrylic Pouring Annemarie uses some pouring medium first, then a tiny bid of water. What brand paint are you using. Try less floetrol but the same amount of water, not more.
