A trout fishing showdown battling power bait vs lures. The lures ranging from spinners, shallow diving hard body lures, spoons and more. Fishing a local lake which had recently been stocked with rainbow trout we put 2 different fishing styles against each other to see which is more effective.
In 2 hours fishing we catch 30 rainbow trout caught between 3 mates. All the trout were released as part of a 100% catch and release fishing experiment. On this occasion powerbait was the clear winner with the lures only catching 2 trout and the powerbait catching over 20.
That’s not to say lures are not effective but on this particular day powerbait was the clear winner on stocked trout. We hope you enjoy this video on trout fishing with lures, trout fishing with powerbait, to share some basic trout fishing tips and techniques using our trout fishing setup.
It was also a nice way to break in the new Shimano Zodias 2020 spin rod. High end rods part of the JDM series. the new rods with the hollow carbon but for 30% more sensitivity. A perfect blend of power and finesse. golden trout time.

Thank's Alan, you guys really cleaned up! I would have to say the results don't surprise me in the slightest, I have found newly stocked hatchery trout to be hard to tempt into taking lures. At Kennington reservoir, I have seen trout circling the perimeter of the lake as though still in hatchery mode.

Hi Alan, I'm new to fishing (solo, I have been on charters) so coming off a low base. Used powerbait on Lake Wendouree shore/jetty without result. Can I please clarify the hook is BELOW the sinker? I see the powerbait is supposed to float, but mine looked like it sunk just as well as the sinker! Do you need a super light hook or something? Also, assuming the sinker is on the bottom and the hook is floating, how are you supposed to feel the bites? I lost lots of bait, but not sure if fish are taking it or it's being ripped off in the weed. Confused!!

Hi Stuart have a look at this article i wrote on the topic. fishingmad.com.au/article/tips-to-catch-trout-the-best-lures-baits-techniques if you scroll down you will see the exact rigs that i use when targeting trout with powerbait. I usually use light braid on the main line, a small ball sinker, to a swivel than about 50cm of light leader like 6 or 8 lb. That works great. There is a members area on our website where we do lots of workshops on this sort of stuff to really help bring you up to speed and answer your questions, so that might be worth considering fishingmad.com.au/member cheers

Nice video mate - always suspected the Powerbait would outfish lures when the stocked trout haven't had to work for their food lol. Got a question though - how do you know this one was already stocked for the school holidays? I can't see any updates to the VFA page for a week or two now. I always try and get my kids to the lakes in the first few days if I can before the "white bucket brigade" turn up, fish it out and ruin it for the kids.
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Scott. Yeah I also thought power bait would do well. There was an announcement on the VFA Facebook page which said the specific date that it was going to be stocked so we went shortly after. I agree once the bucket brigade go and clean it out they ruin it for so many others. We should have tighter limits on stocked fish to make them last longer. Hope that helps

@@fishingmad thanks buddy. On behalf of all the kids out there trying to catch and release a couple of fish during the school holidays I thank you for letting most of them go again :) With the numbers you were catching you can see how easy it would be for a few blokes to pull half the stocked fish out in the first few days!
@fishingmad

Thanks Scott !!! I really appreciate comments like this. I really wish others out there followed the lead. On stocked lakes I always take my bag limit, I have been struggling with keeping a job for 20 years now and some people that go down to these lakes have a lot more money than me, to say release the fish is depatable I have recently seen a few stockiest floating and decomposing because of catch and release, to each Thier own I guess, great vid mate as always.
@fishingmad
@fishingmad 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Your very entitled to take your bag limit and there is nothing wrong with doing that. Great to see that fishing has been a great outlet for you.

How do you know the fish died because of catch and release? I too hate that there are people who go day after day taking their bag limit. IMO the school holiday stocking program is for kids (big and small) to get out and have fun, not for old men to fill their freezer with small trout.
