Thanks for making the trip down to the Esopus. When I lived in N.Y. years ago, that was my favorite trout stream. I recognized some of the places on the river where you fished.. I used to fish morning to night, have dinner in a family owned restaurant in Phoenicia, and drive back to White Plains. Those were the days.

Tip: While euro nymphing, be sure to tuck the line underneath your index finger. I think you missed those fish because the line won’t go tight when you go to set the hook.
@DownstreamDownrange3 жыл бұрын
Will do! I’ll change that
@jaygold44672 жыл бұрын
@@DownstreamDownrange I'll second that. You need to keep the line under your right index finger and when the fish hits pick up on the road quickly and set the hook.

My home creek. Sadly when Hurricanes Irene and Sandy hit, they decimated the Esopus. Tons of large debris, and millions of tons of gravel were swept down the creek. Many places are gone. Many are new. One bridge close to the Ashokan reservoir was totally swept away. From Upper Rt 28A all the way down and out into the reservoir, It's gone. It wiped out an old stone train trestle along the way that we used to cross over the creek on. Neither stick out of the water anywhere. As the creek was/and really is still healing, the invasive species "Rock Snot" has appeared. It was probably brought down from up north on felt bottom boots. It had smothered the rebirth of the creatures on the bottom and slowed the healing down to a crawl. It's a d@mn shame. The food supply that was once in abundance and fed many large sized natives is still in shortage. It's only been stocked with browns ever since, no rainbows have been reintroduced at all.

There’s a ton of wild rainbows. But yes, unfortunately the recovery is still in progress…. Lots of them bows are getting into that 8-12 size now

@@DownstreamDownrange Not a bad idea to try to figure out when they release at the portal. It also becomes a Kayaker thing and thus, mental retardation. But, like the Housatonic, if you hit "the wave". you can annihilate rainbows that average 45 lbs.

usually the water runs murky from the discharge of a reservoir above into the creek.. the creek has become hardly worth fishing as they stopped stocking it and the few rainbows you will find are dinkers. NY state has deliberately ruined the Catskill creeks and rivers fishing. Even Beaverkill has gone to chit!

they stopped stocking it two years ago and barely stocked it for 4 years prior. NY state has deliberately ruined it as well as most the Catskill creeks and rivers. No way making it native only will improve it if they had to stock it before. Think about it.
