Do you ever add lead wire for more weight to sink the fly faster? How does one hide the wire so as not to make the fly get too front end bulky and ruin the profile?

Not usually in this pattern John. But if I did, I’d recommend a very thin, flat lead. This would keep a pretty decent tapered profile with some extra weight to it, without adding too much bulk to the body

I use a bit of thin, round lead in mine up by the head. 3 or 4 turns, make sure the tags are tucked and you just adjust your taper accordingly. Full disclosure though…I only do this because I want to add a bit of bulk without affecting the sink rate. I like a bulkier, buggier, more 3D perdigon and in order to fish the fly deep as intended, it needs a bit more weight. That’s what the lead is there for…
