It's FEBRUARY and that means we are officially in late winter. That means big spring midges are showing up, blue-winged olives are starting to get more active subsurface and days are noticeably longer. It's a great time to be in the Rocky Mountains.
In this month's episode, host Ivan Orsic and co-host Tanner Smith welcome RepYourWater's own Garrison Doctor (who also happens to be an Umpqua Signature Designer) into the studio to talk about flies, presentations, rigging, and the like for the month of February and beyond.

Question for March: Since March is for Spring Breakin', should I be soaking my San Juan Worms in Tequilla for a week prior to hitting the water?

Spring time question: when fishing early spring should I be using more attractor patterns on tail waters like mop flies and big bright nymphs or would it be better to use more natural colors . Stoneflies and rubber legs?

Depends where you fish, but if it’s on the front range of Colorado and your not throwing a stone fly in March your not catching as many fish as you could be.

So on the restoration topic. Dams create sediment buildup… my area had a pristine brook trout stream… they put dams up and it destroyed the creek bed… the sediment is so bad now that people die from sinking in it every couple years… you need high water events to clear sediment and keep places for proper spawning…

Tanner is 100% correct when he mentioned tailwaters being slept on for bigger flies. Starting in March a size 10-12 ginger colored stone fly will be somewhere on my rig

Question for March: How soon are we typically able to fish for ice-out pike? Does Barry Reynolds (or you guys) have a favorite fly for pike at that time?

Definitely set if you see a eat when dry flying. I caught my first trout on a dry fly last weekend. I saw a bunch of fish hitting the top of the water. So, I decided to tie on two dry flies for the first time. I sat there and watched this one just come up over and over again as I tied on. I finally tossed my fly out and maybe the fourth or fifth time I saw the fish come up. I knew my fly was in the area so I just set the hook. He jerked and kicked it was so awesome. So yes, definitely just set if you see a eat if you think your fly is in the area lol. The fly was a Griffith Gnat.

Question for March: With conservation pushes lately for Native fish like Cutthroat trout. What is the time range of spawning for Cutthroat? Should I be on the look out for redds? Or is it to early?

Question for March: Where do you put your weight on the rig if it isn't just on the fly. How far up is your splitshot? Is it ever between flies? Will you use 2 or 3 flies with weight?

The collar on your Frenchie doesn't look too hot. Is it milder on purpose?... or still hot pink but not showing clearly on the video?

When you fish big lakes like spinney do y’all ever bring a spinning rod? I have some rough days in the wind down there and I’ve always been glad i brought my spinning rod, little bit of an early question for march but ice off is coming and im looking forward to it!
