People today are way too quick to attribute brotherhood to homosexuality. There was plenty of gay in the ancient world without that.

I'm sorry, (but not really) a lot of people are not going to like this but I think it is clear that Patroclus and Achilles were lovers. Nobody kills that many people over a friend...even Achilles. Other than that though, it's a great, easy to understand summary of the Trojan war. Thanks!

It isn't clear. The novel never makes it clear. Even ancient Greeks had debates over this. Plato thought they were lovers, while Xenophon thought they were like brothers. Both bonds were valued in ancient Greece, so we have no idea what was Homer's intention.
@mars-nf9cj4 жыл бұрын
@@Eleni1002 when Patroclus died Achilles said (I’m paraphrasing here but just go with it) ‘now you [patroclus] lie here, slaughtered; and my heart has no want for food or drink - only want of you’. I would say that’s pretty gay
@Eleni10024 жыл бұрын
@@mars-nf9cj As I said, brotherhood and companionship between men, especially warriors was valued back then. What Achilles said can be seen as that. It's not made explicitly clear what the nature of their relationship was and since two people who lived in the same era (Plato and Xenophon) had different interpretations of their relationship, how can we be sure about it? We don't even know if homosexuality between men was accepted when Homer wrote the Iliad and before that.
@schottybutitsspelledlikesc68603 жыл бұрын
Thing is too, Patroclus was described as being closer to Achilles than his own father, and that he was the one man Achilles loved more than any other mortal. There's a reason the term "Achillean" exists

Thanks for a great summary of the Iliad and the Odyssey - quick but surprisingly complete --- containing the essential big events and ideas! We read excerpts of the Iliad in early December and I will show this to my HS students --- to jumpstart their brains after Winter Break! Many thanks! PS - I do not see any of the sound issues noted in some of the comments - sounds great to me!

The works of the great poet, Homer, are filled with words that not only survive in Albanian, but continue to be used. From Homer you can get not only words, but also phrases that possess all the signs of a typical Albanian expression. If someone were to interpret Homer from the Albanian language perspective, much light would be shed on the works of that famous poet. Between Homeric and Albanian sentences there is a striking resemblance in expression, phraseology and sentence structure. A study of this nature would help interpret Homer, since the Albanian language is older than that of Greece (Science Magazine 2023), much can be learned about the influence of this [Albanian] on Homeric and later Greek. Title: Unconquerable Albania Author : Christ Anton Lepon Publisher: Chicago, Albanian Liberation Committee, 1944

Now the TRUTH: The 2ND most common ancient document in the world is Homers Iliad. Ppl who went to college had to read it. 1st place goes to the New Testament: theres 25k extant copies TODAY! 4x's more than any other piece of ancient literature of which theres 643 - the oldest is from the 13th c. A.D. - Homer wrote in the 8th c. B.C. To date theres still uncertainty as to whether Homer authored or ever said any of whats written.
