Troy Wright with Plini Live at Unify 2022 Victoria, Australia

I received a last minute call to jump back in with Plini and the boys for the Unify festival in Victoria filling in for Chris Allison (while he was in covid iso) and damn it felt good running some of these tunes again! This was the first show in 2+ years for these guys and almost 5 years since I've played with them!!! For me it was also the first time in about 4 years hitting out a proper gig again!! 💪🏻 I actually played with The Amity Affliction here in 2018 so it was good to be back at Unify again as well!

Personally i really love to see you back on that drumset with Plini. Your style of drumming on "Handmade Cities" was an absolute inspiration for me and since then, i've been trying to recreate that type of atmosphere in my music (with all that cymbal dynamisms and well constructed fills). No joke, you're style is the best i've managed to encounter. Hope to see more stuff of yours!

This is the lineup for plini. Love Chris Allison’s drumming on impulse voices but live I feel his cymbals are little too dry and he doesn’t hit with power to give the music that incredible feeling when certain parts kick in. Troy has dynamics but also knows when the loud parts should be loud and knows when to give alot of energy with his playing and body language. Chris is seriously an incredible drummer but when I saw plini live last year, sometimes he just looks bored back there and certain parts I was looking forward to being powerful and climax all sounded kinda the same volume with his dry cymbals and softer playing. That’s just my personal opinion but both are incredible insanely talented drummers but I do prefer Troy as plini’s drummer.

I think they were each perfect for their respective albums. Chris is the perfect man for the more Jazzy style Plini has been exploring recently. Troy's playing on Handmade Cities took the album to another level. That's the thing with high level drummers like these dudes - they each have their own style that is impossible to emulate. Handmade Cities songs just don't sound the same with Chris playing them, in the same way that Sunhead/Impulse Voices tracks don't sound the same with Troy playing them.

Maybe I'm just biased because the 'Things' trilogy is my favorite era of Plini and I think it has his best melodies by far to date.

It's got to suck to be Chris and be constantly compared to this legend. I think that Chris is technically more capable when it comes to intricate layering of parts, and also plays with a more subtle, jazzy approach. Troy hits like a beast and is an incredible showman - maybe a bit more of a "rock" drummer than a jazz guy. They are both great drummers and I would like to see them share a stage and share songs on Plini's albums; they could tour together and play their own parts, each bringing something unique to the show.
