I think this is one of the saddest break ups ever (and to this day we don’t know why)

connor (franta) is troye's ex boyfriend and who this song is about. although the relationship wasn't explicitly confirmed it's very obvious they dated for a couple of years as they spent most of their time together and both confirmed they were in relationships at points, and connor's book quite clearly represents the "bad side" as he talks about being lost and in depression. basically, they dated for a couple of years and then broke up, troye moved on quickly like he says in the song. the song is meant to be an apology to connor about the way in which things ended. after the breakup, troye got the good side and connor got the bad. he fell back into depression, which he had stuggled with before and said he lost himself and was completely destroyed in his book "note to self". Connor's spent the last 2 years moving on from that and gaining some happiness in his life, I guess some of us just hope that this song doesn't bring up any bad memories he's trying to forget. he deserves the world. it would be nice if they became friends again and actually sorted things out, but I completely understand that its much harder than it looks.

Ugh I'm relating to this song so hard today. I just got out of my first serious relationship a couple months ago. This person was my first experience with love and I was with them for almost 5 years. The part that kills me the most is "so many thoughts I wanted to share, but I didn't call cause it wouldn't be fair". It's so hard when this person has been my go to to share every thought I have for the past 5 years of my life. It's a disheartening and heartbreaking feeling when you no longer have that. I hated it when it came out because I thought it was cruel of him to lay it all out there like that. Like we know who he became and we saw the sad change in Connor but to explicitly say you got the good side and not even let him pretend to be fine, I thought that was too much. But it has been a while and we can see they are both moving on from it and I come to appreciate the way he wrote this song. It’s simple and sincere, none of the flairs other songs in this album have. It’s a genuine apology and I respect that.
