If it took that much force to break the PLA version, you could cut WAY back on wall thickness and win back a lot of excess weight.

Troy, you could swap out the 1100mAh 3s battery on the pla plane with a 4s 1100mAh battery to move the cg AND increase the rpm/power without changing the motor. Batteries make for free ballast - always having extra Wh never hurts! Great video, thanks.

How about printing the fuselage out of regular PLA and printing the wings and tail parts out of LW PLA? That way you would get a strong structure to carry the motor, batteries, landing gear, and a lighter structure to save weight in the wings and tail. That would also help with the balance issues.

Very insightful video. Would suggest editing title to include "(LW-PLA vs. PLA)" to help with search results. I had initially overlooked the video assuming it was focused on tundra style planes, not realizing the focus. (my bad, delayed viewing and and didn't realized I'd missed) The comparison is very dramatic. 890g (PLA) vs 680g (LW-PLA) as measured on the bench. ie: PLA is ~1.5x heavier, or LW-PLA is only 75% of weight of PLA edition. And ... this didn't include the extra weight added to PLA version to adjust CoG, so 900g+ in reality.

I'm printing an Eclipson EBW 160 and some wing parts print completely clean, while other wing pieces with more internal support structure are printing with stringing lines on the exterior adjacent to the interior support lines. I had the z seam set to 'back' and retraction at 2.5mm. Any ideas?
@kevinbuggie38083 жыл бұрын
Also th EBW 160 has circular cut-outs within the internal support structures and that seems to be where I get the stringing. The parts that print cleanly for me don't seem to have those cut-outs. In the video, it seems that you say the newer bush plane from Eclipson doesn't have any of the circle cut outs. Maybe a change from their older designs before LW-PLA.

Adjusted the combing mode setting ('from not in skin' to 'off'), like you recommended in your settings profile, and now no stringing on exterior of prints! Interesting, however I think a better comparison would be a lw eclypson plabe vs a pla 3d lab print plane with similar Wingspan and power train. Eclypson designs for the properties of lw pla whereas I feel others design around the weight penalty of pla. I think that would be an interesting comparison. Sadly the decision for me is already made, the prohibitively expensive shipping of lw pla is a considerable disadvantage. In addition the cold weather flying is not great for the durability of these planes.

Would epoxy work with PLA? Lots here to experiment with. I could imagine getting the weight down below 500 g that way. I also like your approach to simple tests. Subbed.

Interesting but seems like an unfair comparison. If the PLA is that much stronger then you don't need as much reinforcement, so you save weight that way. Using a PLA-LW model for the PLA plane isn't really a fair comparison then, as it's not clear whether a plane specifically designed for PLA would still weigh more in the end. Definitely a question worth investigating because the PLA plane would presumably be more impact resistant too.

Thanks for another great video Troy! Thanks to you I discovered PrintPlanes Big Bobber, and have now printed that one with the wing and tail in LW-PLA. As you also mention in this video it's a lot of stringing, but the weight savings are still about 50% for the parts. I have also printed some of the 3DLabPrint planes, and I think you are a bit unfair in this video. Eclipson have really made a step towards designing their planes for LW-PLA, but the latest designs from 3DLabPrint do the same, using "spiralling vase" settings in the slicer. The Bungee Prop I printed was just ridicules light, and I hardly imagine it's possible to make that design in balsa any lighter. Please do a review of one of the latest designs from 3DlabPrint, as both them and Eclipson are really in the forefront when it comes to designing 3D printed RC airplanes. Cheers Marius

@@TroyMcMillan Agreed, it also needs a bigger capacity Lipo, even a 2200mah 4S isn't unreasonable...🤔🤔🇬🇧

@@EnglishTurbines True that could be a better setup for the PLA version it would be a much faster panes with that setup.

@@TroyMcMillan Which motor did you order for the PLA version?
@EnglishTurbines3 жыл бұрын
@@TroyMcMillan You might be surprised, the plane has enough wing area, the increase in flying speed won't be as much as you imagine. Besides landing a little faster, it's going to be around 4 times stronger than LW PLA...a good thing IMO...🤔🤔🇬🇧

I would rather use pla and have the extra strength. Counter it by adding different motor.

Merhaba hocam! 3DLabPrint internet sitesinden Cessna 152 yi indiremedim. Ödeme yapamıyorum. Türkiye ile ilgili ödeme problemi yaşanıyor. Bana yardımcı olur musunuz? Eclipson Model Y indirdim. Ama asıl istediğim Cessna 152. Lütfen yardım edin.

The way you dropped out of that roll with the LW plane I suspect the CG is too far forward.
