In this video I will tell you what airplanes can and can be printed in LW-PLA. I will test the strength of the materials, and I will fly both airplanes to compare the flights between the two airplanes. I will show the difference between printing with Eclipson and printing with other plane designs.

Troy, you could swap out the 1100mAh 3s battery on the pla plane with a 4s 1100mAh battery to move the cg AND increase the rpm/power without changing the motor. Batteries make for free ballast - always having extra Wh never hurts! Great video, thanks.

Very insightful video. Would suggest editing title to include "(LW-PLA vs. PLA)" to help with search results. I had initially overlooked the video assuming it was focused on tundra style planes, not realizing the focus. (my bad, delayed viewing and and didn't realized I'd missed) The comparison is very dramatic. 890g (PLA) vs 680g (LW-PLA) as measured on the bench. ie: PLA is ~1.5x heavier, or LW-PLA is only 75% of weight of PLA edition. And ... this didn't include the extra weight added to PLA version to adjust CoG, so 900g+ in reality.

Great info and use for the LW-PLA. Since you have printed a good number of planes I was wondering if you have branched out into materials other than PLA? I've been using some engineering grade materials, CF-Nylon and CF-PC, and was wondering if they would be worth exploring for this application. Also, I was wondering if you've had any issues with UV or temperature exposure in your models. I recall a flying buddy building one and having issues in the FL sun and temps.

Nice video. I'm almost finished printing my first PLA airplane. Thanks to Eclipson and Flight Test for the free download. I was kind of scared to try 3D printing a plane because of the time it took to print it. My fear is always a crash and burn on the maiden. Now that I have tried this, I will probably be ordering some different models from Eclipson. They have this stuff figured out for sure. All of the parts came have come out perfectly on my Ender 3. How about printing the fuselage out of regular PLA and printing the wings and tail parts out of LW PLA? That way you would get a strong structure to carry the motor, batteries, landing gear, and a lighter structure to save weight in the wings and tail. That would also help with the balance issues.

The Bungee Prop is very light and uses a indoor model motor. It doesn’t handle wind at all, but fly very slowly. It’s in a different category than the other model Troy has reviewed, and some of the other planes in the 3DLab PrInt LW-PLA series may be better options for comparison. I do like the carbon fiber rod reinforced that Eclipson uses, haven’t seen that at 3DLab Print.

Troy, Thanks again for a great video. Why are you not using VASE mode with the Eclipson model? There would be no Z-Lines using VASE mode. Not having the STL files and seeing how it would slice, I could be asking a really stupid question. Your strength test have shown me, that while I may be pretty experienced with 3d printing, I'm better off using normal PLA until the level of my flying is a LOT better. Seems like this is a normal, the better you get, they better gear you can use to fly with.

Interesting, however I think a better comparison would be a lw eclypson plabe vs a pla 3d lab print plane with similar Wingspan and power train. Eclypson designs for the properties of lw pla whereas I feel others design around the weight penalty of pla. I think that would be an interesting comparison. Sadly the decision for me is already made, the prohibitively expensive shipping of lw pla is a considerable disadvantage. In addition the cold weather flying is not great for the durability of these planes.

I'm thinking of hard balsa spars and longerons with additive manufactured complex curved parts and ribs. Maybe inserted spars in a a very light wing structure to avoid having to cover, or with cover. Would epoxy work with PLA? Lots here to experiment with. I could imagine getting the weight down below 500 g that way. I also like your approach to simple tests. Subbed.

Interesting but seems like an unfair comparison. If the PLA is that much stronger then you don't need as much reinforcement, so you save weight that way. Using a PLA-LW model for the PLA plane isn't really a fair comparison then, as it's not clear whether a plane specifically designed for PLA would still weigh more in the end. Definitely a question worth investigating because the PLA plane would presumably be more impact resistant too.

I would be interested to see the difference in the ability to break when the skin of the wing has not been broken. Because that skin also aids the overall strength of the ribbing and such. Just curious...

Thanks for another great video Troy! Thanks to you I discovered PrintPlanes Big Bobber, and have now printed that one with the wing and tail in LW-PLA. As you also mention in this video it's a lot of stringing, but the weight savings are still about 50% for the parts. I have also printed some of the 3DLabPrint planes, and I think you are a bit unfair in this video. Eclipson have really made a step towards designing their planes for LW-PLA, but the latest designs from 3DLabPrint do the same, using "spiralling vase" settings in the slicer. The Bungee Prop I printed was just ridicules light, and I hardly imagine it's possible to make that design in balsa any lighter. Please do a review of one of the latest designs from 3DlabPrint, as both them and Eclipson are really in the forefront when it comes to designing 3D printed RC airplanes. Cheers Marius

Yes you are correct 3D lab print is now designing there airplanes like this. Just the only plane I have made from them was not this way and it was hard to print. I definitely will be trying another one of 3D lab Prints planes to compare it to the other print styles. Thank you for the comment. Cheers

Their zero that says it’s designed for LW-PLA still has stringing and retraction. I wish they would get rid of the diamond structure in the wing. The cub doesn’t use it and prints beautifully.

I like that you compare the two but the manufacture is always out so why do it when you can not buy it anywhere. It is just a tease to us wanting to buy it. They can not keep up with the demand so I gave up on trying to get it and gave up on buying the models from Eclipson until I can buy the LW filament, so we all loose. I will just have to stay with what I have until they get there production back up or a copycat starts to figure out how to make it.

Do they have LW-ASA in stock you can use that it is a new product they just made. It is like ABS or PETG more heat resistant but still LW.

I'm printing an Eclipson EBW 160 and some wing parts print completely clean, while other wing pieces with more internal support structure are printing with stringing lines on the exterior adjacent to the interior support lines. I had the z seam set to 'back' and retraction at 2.5mm. Any ideas?
@kevinbuggie3808
@kevinbuggie3808 3 жыл бұрын
Also th EBW 160 has circular cut-outs within the internal support structures and that seems to be where I get the stringing. The parts that print cleanly for me don't seem to have those cut-outs. In the video, it seems that you say the newer bush plane from Eclipson doesn't have any of the circle cut outs. Maybe a change from their older designs before LW-PLA.

Adjusted the combing mode setting ('from not in skin' to 'off'), like you recommended in your settings profile, and now no stringing on exterior of prints! Seems to have switched to the interior wall, which I can't cut off as well with razor blade but results in killer smooth wing surface. Thanks again

@@kevinbuggie3808 Sorry for the late response it seams you have figured it out yes this would be my recommendation to check combing mode. Yes this must have been before the LW-PLA print method. I am happy you are having smooth prints now good luck with your build. Cheers

Keep an eye on filament pricing around timeframe of Dutch holidays. (a group-buy with a friend to split shipping costs also help, as shipping 2-4 rolls cost the same as single roll) I found a nice discount, this way by way of lucking timing as to my purchase. In last year a few N-American 3d-print suppliers have begun caring LW-PWA, but only limited color options of the expanded range of colors available. 🌈

Love all your Videos. Definitely going to buy the Model C when it comes out. Wondering about Cura settings though. I can't seem to figure out how to get Cura print each layer without travel. Either it prints all the inside walls first or all the outslide walls first. Could you maybe give me a tip as to the setting I am missing?

@@TroyMcMillan You might be surprised, the plane has enough wing area, the increase in flying speed won't be as much as you imagine. Besides landing a little faster, it's going to be around 4 times stronger than LW PLA...a good thing IMO...🤔🤔🇬🇧
