Boy oh boy, does this make things tough for the oldies. My heart wanted Bekele and Kipchoge, but I struggle to see either of them up in the top 3 here, especially now with these gradients. The winner I think will be a younger runner. The Kenyans should kick themselves now for not picking Evans Chebet - he would have been a course fave on this setup.

@@amblincork he's nearly 40, and Bekele is over 40. Odds are: good young un tends to beat a good old un, most of the time in similar training - but on hills especially. What happened in Boston for Kipchoge may come into play here. I hope they can do it - but those gradients don't help them, overall. Young legs tend to take distance and gradients better, all things considered, given similar training.

Of course it’s not just the total amount, 10 m per km for the whole course would still be hard. The steep bits are the key, go too hard and you cant keep up after the hills, too slow and you can’t catch up. I would compare with the heat in Beijing. A bunch of runners will attack on the uphills, and a few will survive. Whoever wins will become a legend.

@@tomrichardson5433 I think it will be suicidal to attack the hills considering the weather forecast and where these hills are. Olympics are usually slower than usual winning times and I attribute that to the pressure so I my prediction is even splits between first and second 13.1, and much slower times even on the flats than these men run regularly.

The course profile is nothing new (it was officially announced on oct 2022) and we would expect every athletes who will take part in this marathon to have trained and prepared accordingly. About the profile, the first climb is not that hard but starts after 14.6km and goes on for 5.7km - the 2nd one at Pavé des Gardes is a different story though, way steepest (up to 15% 😱) but for "only" 800/900 meters... starting at 28.8km into the marathon (after a short 350m climb and 100m plateau) and before the long downhill that will put heavy pressure on quads and hamstrings.... That being said, as much as I would love to see Eliud threepeat, I think Lemma and Munyao have greater chance to make it first given recent performances... but Olympics are also made to crown legends and write sport history, so let's see on August 10th who will cross the finish line first 🏅

I ran Boston and New York 3 times each under 2:30. I didn't find the uphills in Boston to be that difficult, it was the final downhill that hurt the most. I also didn't find the hills to be much of a problem in NYC. It was the grating on the Queensboro and re-entering Central Park for the second and final time that really bothered me. Those downhills in Paris will be murder.

Based on the same letsrun article that I imagine also inspired this video, I’m going for Victor Kiplangat. He’s got the pedigree of winning the two most recent championship marathons, and he’s a 2017 mountain running world champion. This course is unlike anything we’ve seen except for perhaps the 2020 Olympic trials in Atlanta, and even that was held in cool weather. I think the Paris course will demand somebody with a proven recent track record in hot championship marathons and an appetite for running hills. I think it’ll be between him, Benson Kipruto, and Tola, who’s in for the injured Sissay Lemma. Dark horse is Pacheco of Peru. PR is way off the East Africans but he trains in the high Andes and knows how to run hills better than almost anybody. Who knows there could be a decent shot for a Mantz-type grinder as well, although top 10, as that letsrun article said, is a more realistic aspiration considering the incredible field assembled here.

@@cubebeast6479 2:08 on this course would be very surprising imo. But it’s an incredible field. I personally think that PRs will count for very little on the day, those hills will punish anybody who thinks they can hang at 2:08 pace or faster. You’re right, Kiplangat’s PR is much slower than some of the other East Africans but look at what he did in Budapest last year in horrendous heat and humidity. I’m not saying he will win, but he’s flying under the radar and has a shot.

3:09 - it seems that the incredibly steep climb from 27.5 km ends at 29 km (~1.5 km), not 30 km (~2.5 km), according to the map. An extra km with that kind of gradient will make an enormous difference. Imagine sprinting down that 3km steep decline after reaching the top of that massive climb! I would bet whoever gets to the peak at 29 km first would win the race if no other unexpected factors come in play.

We just learned this? We’ve known it’s going to be hilly and hot for like a year!

Hills, no pacers and hot weather - 3 difficult factors, not one. My prediction - winner time will be 2:02:50-2:03:30, Big competition, lots of capable runners and Kipchoge is not on his prime.

"Hills, no pacers and hot weather" and you expect a winner in around 2:03 ? With Lemma dropping there's barely one with a PR close to that, PR that were all done in fresh weather and flat course. Look at what the heat just did for previous olympics marathon times, now add the elevation and there's no chance anyone will go below 2h10

The Akron Marathon has about 700-800 feet of elevation gain in the second half, 1200 feet overall - it's a soul sucker.

I believe this is Eliud's swansong. And as much as I would love him to win, I don't think he will.

This course would have suited Kelvin Kiptum and we could have witness the best Olympic marathon race in history. Unfortunately 😢. RIP Kelvin Kiptum.

Neither Bekele nor Kipchoge will win, unfortunately. The course will tire them more than the younger men.

Huge problem for Kipchoge???? not at all. He ran Boston for a reason, to see how he goes over hills and he would have learned a ton from that. The course is the same for everyone, the hills, the predicted heat, everything, so thats where Kipchoge has a huge advantage, because he knows how to run and win Olympic style races, Its not about time, its about strategy and you can bet he has put everything into training for this his swang song and legacy race at the Olympics. If anyone beats him they will have the toughest race of their life and they would have deserved it.
