Is the encoder ring what usually goes bad or is it the motor that quits? I have one that stays in 4 wheel but after setting overnight will go back into 2 wheel.

Was going to change ring but after taking it apart I noticed a tooth missing from small gear inside which was causing service 4x4, lights to blink when trying to engage 4x4 and randomly being able to lock in out 4x4. Couldn't find a replacement gear have order complete motor.

the spline on the male end has to match what position the motor comes from the factory in, which is neutral.

I am stuck in 4 wheel so how do I get transfer case back into neutral when I replace the unit?

how can you tell whether the whole motor needs changed or just the encoder ring?

If you are stuck in 2wd or 4wd or N Then the motor will need to be replaced. I was told an early sign is not being able to shift from 4L to 4H but getting a registry that it is in 4H, or won’t shift at all just blinking 4H and back to 4L. If it’s the ring I replied to that on a different comment

Some context why this needed to replaced would have been helpful. Got a 2010 that wont shift out of 4L and feels like the front dif is locked up.

What are some signs that the encoder motor sensor is bad?

When your crank the truck and the lights on the 4wd switch doesn’t show or if you killed the truck in 2wd and you crank it up later or the next morning and it shows 4L, 4H, or N. Traditionally that would be the encoder ring. I would inspect the gaskets, plastic motor housing and harness boot for any damages
