Madamigella Valéry?... Pura siccome un angelo... Dite alla giovine...
I coulda sworn someone uploaded this scene years ago. Well as you know, I'm a Cornell MacNeil nut, and this is-believe it or not-the earliest footage of him after the 1964 Tosca in Genoa. And in terms of vocalism/technique/function, this is a far better document of his Germont than the 1981 telecast.
#Baritones #Sopranos #Opera
.....................................
This channel is primarily about vocal emission-aural examples of basically correct singing, correct impostazione-chiaroscuro, vowel clarity, firm and centered pitch, correct vibrato action, absence of throatiness or thickness, sounds free from constriction and from the acoustic noise that accompanies it-with occasional video examples that demonstrate what the body, face, mouth, jaw, and tongue look like when used with correct impostazione-the vocal emission of the one and only Italian school.
Caveat: I'm biased in favor of baritones and baritone literature, but if you want to learn about and listen to all the greatest singers in the old-school tradition, explore this spreadsheet (voice parts are separated by tabs): bit.ly/2W4qmE3

Of course he is. Sutherland is basically inaudible outside of her high notes. If only Macneil was singing when Callas was in her prime... I could ONLY imagine those two titans really going to work!

I saw Cornell Macneil and Gianna D'Angelo in 'Rigoletto' in 1967 in San Antonio TX when I was 22 and had no idea who he was! It was the first professionally staged opera I had seen. He was 45 then.

MacNeil sounds incredible. A massive, sonorous voice but with clear diction. I actually rank him on par with the likes of Tita Ruffo, Giuseppe Danise and Mattia Battistini, as the greatest baritones of the 20th century.

god, the days when it was voice, voice, voice and more voice at the opera! I find this divine---like a 19th C world of opera, the sets, the grand diva playing a girl, love it. (Baritone lovers note: I have a playlist you might like, "Donizetti baritone arias" here on YT.) Cheers!

@@trrill I have actually included certain Verdi pieces on the list to show how Verdi grew explicitly and consciously out of Donizetti, whom V admired enormously. These duets really are the heart of 19th C Italian opera---as is this duet.

There are some idiotic comments about Sutherland not being heard except in high notes. Ridiculous. I was in the audience (first balcony) and every note, high or low, could be heard clearly. Both artists had very big voices. They were both marvelous not only in this scene, but elsewhere.

Agree. At this time her voice was large. Like many singers as she aged it did diminish but it was always audible.

Joan Sutherland’s huge voice didn’t record well on most occasions. To hear her in the prime years up to the early 1970’s was a revelation No one today can come even near.

Completely? I actually understand most of what Sutherland sings here just fine, not great diction, but more than adequate for the most part, and MacNeil's diction is actually very clear, with excellent articulation here. Do you people even hear attentively before coming here to write the same old criticisms? For God's sake...
@MurasakiMonogatari
@MurasakiMonogatari 4 жыл бұрын
@@aprendizercomygor Yes, here it's not as bad as her worst, but still not great. Which is why I said it was always a problem, not 'yes, it's horrendous here'. Besides, diction isn't the biggest issue here; next to his squillo, she is barely noticeable, as she always is every time in such a situation, regardless of high notes.

Some good sounds here, but this is not the heartrending duet that Verdi intended. So little emotional momentum and it sounds as if the conductor has gone to sleep on the podium

MacNeil was incredibly well trained. He never sounded Anglo or overly covered. Sutherland is a Celtic titan really a Germanic like voice. Such tones that play Violetta can soar but they miss everything else that matters in this very Italianate role. She is just not the right voice for this part. It requires text and her ludicrous diction is just glaring. Others roles can just about be enjoyed with less diction, not this role. It’s the same with Tosca Mimi Suor Angelica Aida Amelia Nedda they all live on the diction. She sounds very weird.
