I installed an EMF Detector app on my Android. When I held it near my Echo Show, the alarm went sky high and about burst my eardrums. Then I held the phone near my cell phone charger and a repeat. Next I held it near my IPad charger stand that I have next to my bed, and off it went again. Now I turn those items off at the surge protector and I do get better reception. Sad to say. I tried the phone next to my 2700 Watt Blue Etti Solar Generator which is in the room, but not turned on. My poor eardrums. I have now moved those items away from my bed and turn them off when I turn on my Tecsun 990, Now I have to wonder if those devices have been causing my sleep issues. Love your channel.

I'm going to get one of those radios to basically replace my Radio Shack DX-390. it's still mint, still works pretty good, but it's just a little tired now. I want a new portable with new technology. I almost always use my desktops like I have done for 40 years, just want a good portable. I use a Sat 800, Drake R8, Icom IC-R8600, and a RSPdx as my main radios now.

Doesn’t the AC adapter cause noise? I thought we were supposed to use batteries to avoid noise.

Phone and tablet chargers, laptop chargers, TVs, basically anything powered by switch mode power supply can cause lots of noise and even travel down the mails wires into the next house on the street all cheaply made junk!

Exactly. Speaking from personal experience my bedroom ultrasonic aromatherapy diffuser is the worst RFI offender I've come across! It comes with a cheaply made AC wall plug that emits so much noise and it's even worse when the diffuser is switched on. Ever since I started my SWL'ing hobby, I stopped using the aromatherapy diffuser in my bedroom. Most Chinese made AC adapters and USB chargers are made as cheaply as possible and their manufacturers don't bother to comply with RFI emission regulations.

@@StratmanII most of this electronic junk does not meet regulation but even worse is the E.U's CE mark on products which means the "company" that made the product has tested their products to confirm they meet regulation, it's a farce a bit like E.U vehicle emissions tests which favour the manufacture which is why the VW diesel scandal wasn't a big deal in the E.U because our emissions regulations are vastly inferior to that of the U.S for example, it has improved but still favours diesels due to lower Co2 but doesn't go far enough to reduce harmful emissions that actually harm human health and the environment. Anyway, back to RFI, I have binned several cheap led light bulbs for Philips and Osram, the difference was amazing. Usually the smaller the led light such as GU10 the worse the emissions. I've binned bad phone chargers too. Even one from a Samsung tablet was bad, I was surprised by that because other Samsung chargers I had were fine. The same goes for Laptop chargers and basically any modern electronic device today.

@@o00scorpion00o That's very true on so many levels! I guess since AM radio listening (that includes MW and SW) is no longer a mainstream medium, none of the electronics appliance manufacturers bother to take steps to reduce, if not completely eliminate RFI. I haven't seen DC power cables equipped with in-line ferrite chokes for most laptops either. FM stations are less sensitive to interference and since most people listen to FM broadcast, consumers don't even realize the amount of RFI generated by cheaply made wall adapters, battery chargers, LED lighting etc. 🙄

Hi Tom, it would have been more informative if you had brought your Big Bertha and compared its performance vs your H-501x. If that Grundig Satellit also has difficulties picking up the same frequencies as the Tecsun, then it's a propagation issue in Florida which affects any shortwave radio. Just a thought. 📻🤔

@@hamrad88 I didn't know the Grundig Satellit 800 is that heavy, Tom. Apologies for my ignorance as I've only seen Big Bertha in photos and videos, never once in real life! 🙏🏼 You have quite an amazing collection of radios! I'm not sure if you have a Tecsun PL-880 but I just thought that having another receiver side by side with your H-501x in this video would help to rule out the latter having problems with sensitivity. I'm almost certain that the low solar flux index on that day affected short wave reception globally. I noted that usually powerful broadcast stations like Radio China International suffered from severe fading in the past two weeks, therefore I'm sure your H-501x is fine as it is. 📻👍🏼

@@StratmanII It is not so much the weight but it is bulky. Yes, I have the PL-880 and mine sits on the shelf because it is not that good of a radio compared to other radios. SFI has been improving this week and I hope to get in my radio shack and do some comparisons. Have a great day. BTW I have nearly 400 radios now.

The Tecsun PL-990/990x is also a highly regarded portable receiver, just as good as the H-501/H-501x. The 990 is slightly cheaper, lighter and uses just one 18650 lithium ion battery instead of two. The H-501 is a really large paperbook form factor radio with four speakers. It has a rather thin and flimsy metal stand to support its weight, which has been criticized by at least one KZbin content creator. Other desktop Tecsun radios of the same caliber include the S-2000 and the S-8800 - this one has a remote control as the S-8800 lacks frequency keypad entry buttons. If you love large "portable" receivers for their audio quality and big LCD displays then the H-501x should tick all of your check boxes. Hope this helps. 📻😀

The H501 is a good radio, SSB audio quality and performance has been greatly improved, the 990x is a disaster on SSB.
