What IS the difference between TRS vs TRRS? A TRRS connector looks like a TRS connector right? And can you go TRRS to TRS? Well this video explains TRS cables and 3.5mm connectors!
We also address what is microphone phasing and how do we fix it? How do you organize your foley file names? Is Deity Steve an idiot? Find the answers to these question and more in this episode of Sound 101!
We also tackle some issues like when to use a camera mic and what's the best camera mic? We even cover the difference between plugin power vs phantom power.
Don't forget to leave us a comment below with your question - you could be featured on the next mailbag and even win a Deity V.Lav for your next production!

So was the answer: In order to have audio input into an iPhone (such as plugging a mic into an iPhone), you'll need to use a TRRS-to-TRRS cable that's plugged into a 3.5mm-to-Lightning adapter?

For sound design, how would you go about recording a sound effect that is very quiet but in the final mix it needs to sound a) loud (so it could need boosting in post but to a degree that will raise the noise floor significantly) and b) far away (so holding the mic as close as possible to the source of the sound effect makes it sound too close)?

Hi! Had a quick question in the TRS and TRRS pins. I have a WDTV HD which has a 3.5mm AV OUT (TRRS) port. I want to connect a 3.5mm cable from it to an external speaker. When I connect it there is a loud buzz/ humming sound and the audio from source is very light. Is it because I am trying to use TRRS port with TRS Cable? Suggest a solution. Thank you.

@charlesisrecording
@charlesisrecording 5 жыл бұрын
If you have a boom op, or someone from your class just happens to be the one using the boom, first set your levels during rehearsal, the boom op should know the dialogue or try to learn the cue for each person and it shouldn't be too difficult, please keep in mind the frame, if you have a wide shot, it can get tricky or impossible, sometimes you need a 2nd boom, if you have a huuuge wide shot, the boom can pick up some of the dialogue, and then capture the best audio posible during the close up and mid shot

I have a old Sony ECM-DS70P that I am trying to use with my iPhone. A standard TRS to TRRS adapter isn't working. I suspect it's because it's a plug in power mic and the adapter is looking at the wrong ring/sleeve. Any ideas on how to overcome this issue?
@jacobwinter1545
@jacobwinter1545 5 жыл бұрын
Great video, some headphones made for phones not only have a mic sending a signal down the sleeve but also can change volume etc. but all of the channels have been used up, haven't they? Also, you mentioned that phantom power goes down the ground channel, I'd love a more in-depth video about that.
@imark7777777
@imark7777777 2 жыл бұрын
Yes having a microphone signal and control signal on the same wire is a feat of engineering. There's a couple different ways to do it when is to use a slight resistance that is detectable and this has traditionally been the method for the play pause button. for the volume buttons have gone two different ways depending whether you're android or Apple, Apple uses a communication chip and android uses a simpler method with just slightly different resistances. Phantom power is actually carried on two of the wires in an exact balance so that they are like the phantom of the opera there's no power here to the capsule of a dynamic microphone. But anything that would require processing can take a vantage of that using the ground connection and carefully separating the power off of the other two wires.

Here's a question I have about 3.5mm audio jacks... So for backstory, I have a microphone reciever, that has an included TRRS/TRS cable, and I have a TRRS extension cable. It's not deity brand reciever, it's a PicoStream one, but the underlying problem would probably happen with all brands. The problem happens when trying to use the microphones on my PC, but only in certain circumstances. So here's my problem... I hook my PicoStream receiver up to the PC with the included TRS/TRRS cable, and I can use all the settings just fine, including the single channel per microphone setting, which I believe is the TRS setting (which reciever is set for), BUT, the problem is, if I hook up my TRRS extension cable between the included cable and the PC (in mic1=left ch, mic2=right ch mode) it doesn't separate the channels into left and right for some reason and just sounds like regular stereo/mono, whereas it works perfectly with the included short female to female cable... Ok, so, after all of that, the question I have is this... Why does the included TRRS/TRS cable work fine, and do EVERY audio protocol, but adding a male to female extension cable seem to break compatibility with the TRS protocol??? Shouldn't it be able to do both protocols, if it's a TRRS cable??? And for reference the 3rd party extension cable is a "cable creations" branded one, bought on Amazon, and it IS good looking (and looking like it will last)... As much as I greatly understand how audio works, even for an audio noob, at least in general, I'm not sure what causes this to not do what it's supposed to...

Long question related to audio, and probably a stumper: I am digitizing mini-DV tapes using a Canon Elura 60 and Elgato video capture. I am using the setup described on page 35 of the Canon Elura Manual( downloads.canon.com/camcorder/elura60_65_70_inst.pdf). The video signal is captured with an S-VHS cable, and that works fine. For the audio, I am using an STN-250N cable. On the camera end, the STN-250N plugs into the AV jack of the Elura. The other end has RCA cables and I am just using the red and white since the video is captured through the S-VHS cable. When I plug the STN-250N into the Elura, I get this horrible buzzing sound. I can capture audio ONLY if I take the plug half-way out. Now, the same thing happens with regular 3.5 mm TRSS headphones. Do you think that a TRS cable instead of a TRSS would solve the issue? (I ordered one from Amazon to try). If not, any ideas what the issue is?

I'm looking for information on different connection techniques as well, for a dual-mic setup I have, so this kind of video would definitely help me figure out which connections are needed where... For instance, my receiver supports outputting audio on a single channel, like having a left channel on one mic, and right channel on the other, individually mixed on a mixer, with XLR more than likely, or on cameras and computers, in the same manner,(using 3.5) albeit with a little less control of the audio mixing. Of course it doesn't support that on phone, and instead just sends what amounts to mono audio Love my microphone setup, don't get me wrong, and it's fairly new, but I am still looking into the best ways I can utilize the microphones. Want to do videos with them eventually, but it's a bit complicated, when all I have is a pixel 4a phone, and no place to call a dedicated set, nor one clean enough to be, so I'm currently trying to find other things that I can use them for, such as doing video capture, with voice overlay...

owww double question. Yes and no having a battery operated microphone let you use that microphone with almost any recorder but on the opposite the trade-off of having to replace a battery in five different microphones and keep them all relatively topped up so you know when they're gonna die means you're preemptively changing them so they don't die during a recording. Centralizing this with a phantom powering system allows one device at the center of everything to push that power down to microphones which might be placed in positions where you can't easily change the battery. And reduces the number of batteries needed so one big battery can operate the recorder which in turn Powers the microphones.

Sitting there on the audio jack == ok that means the jack 'it lines up that audio signal to that pin" You mean, routes that audio signal to -- that pin of the jack? 10:00 "when you plug a V-log into a phone" -- You mean a mic used for vlogging, into a cellphone? Or ??? 10:08 'that sensor recognizes the fact that it's positive bias voltage" Apparently the sensor inside the DSLR jack, recognizes the bias voltage on pin 4 of the cellphone " and that that's the audio pin" You just said pin 4 was bias voltage. WTF??? "It lines up its audio signal of the lavalier" 1 Which is "it" 2 Which is supplying bias voltage? It should be the cellphone. Or is it the DSLR? "...over to that pin" WHich pin? Why wouldn't it be two pins? Is this a stereo or mono mic? If stereo wouldn't you need 3 pins? I'm guessing the DSLR recognizes that pin 4 of the cellphone plug has audio. But the graphic labels pin 4 as 'bias' voltage 10:13 graphic of two 3.5mm TRRS plugs, one labeled DSLR, one labeled Phone "like a DSLR wants" Ummm do you mean 'expects'? or "is conventional?" or ???? " typically a DSLR with a built in mic supplies....i'm tired of multiple guessing "Reallly technical answer" More accurately a really sloppy, no effort put into clarity and accuracy answer. Each uncertainty, piles onto another uncertainty exponentially. Just three uncertainties, two with 2 posibilites, one with 3 possibilities, would mean (2^2^3 = 64 possibilities. Nobody has time to try out 64 possibilities and see which one makes most sense. Thanks at least, for an idea for a video: How sloppy, train of thought explanations like this quickly become utterly intractable to decipher. And make otherwise bright, healthy minds think they are stupid, and give up trying. I'm going to Google some more and I'm sure eventually I'll figure out how these "Plug-in Power" labeled 3.5mm jacks on DSLRs work.

not so fast....yes they are TRRS but with apple and samsung the 'mic' and 'ground' are swapped.....how do i know...because it pissed me off big time...and how do i know it has to be a plastic/rubber/ connector...again the ground, utterly annoying. then there is CTIA to omtp adapters....which will work with which?.....dont ask, in the end i had to make my own cable.

Hey guys... Great video!!!! Please can you help me with trying to plug a Boya -M1DM lavalier mic into an iPhone 6 and to a laptop with only two connections for a headphone and mic. The Boya mic has a TRRS connector, but when I plug this into my phone I cannot hear the person at the other end. Must I use headphones? Is it possible to use without headphones! And when plugged into my computer, I have a mic/headphone splitter connected to the Boya and the laptop, but the sound from the recipient at the other end is cut out when I use the headphones. I want to improve the overall quality of sound when using Zoom, which is why I want the external mic in the first place. Many thanks Tim

Nice presentation, except you didn't answer the question about microphones and phasing. The question asked "What does it mean when Two Microphones are out of phase?" You talked about the resultant audio delay distortion when a sound arrives at an additional microphone after it has been picked up by a previous microphone. The question has to do with the engineering specs of every microphone, and is often quoted in the spec sheet, "...positive pressure on the diaphragm results in positive voltage on pin 2" or words to that effect. To be in-phase, any two microphones must adhere to the same standard. If one produces a positive-going waveform from positive sound pressure, but another produces a negative-going waveform from the same source, they are said to be out of phase. They therefore tend to cancel out the audio signal if the two outputs are summed, or if you're listening to each in its own monitor speaker or headphone, it sounds like your head has somehow been disconnected from reality--very disconcerting. The fix is as you suggest--push the button. If you don't have a button, check the wiring. You might also build a short jumper that purposefully swaps the wires on pins two and three between a male and female XLR. Cheers!

I learned a lot here, thanks. But there is still something I Must know...My RODE external shotgun mic has a 1/4" TRS connector that works great on my Sony VIXIA HF M50...BUT my BOYA BY-M1 lapel mic has a TRRS which works on my Android phone and iPad but Not on the VIXIA. Someone PLEASE tell me exactly what adapter I need to purchase to use the Boya BY M1 on the VIXIA HF M50. BTW, New Subscriber to this great channel!

If you've ever plugged your TRS headset traditionally an iPhone headset into something I noticed it didn't work very well and if you were clever enough to figure out if you pulled it out slightly it worked. This is caused by that Jack trying to use the microphone as the ground for the audio signal of the left and right and guess what it doesn't work well or at all. This is caused because the ground connection is usually the metal ring at the very bottom near the outside of the Jack it's not expecting a TRRS Jack and it's only expecting to make contact with me TRrS so there's nothing touching that second R so the signal kinda has to go through the microphone to get ground which doesn't work very well at all. There was a competing standard in the android universe briefly that swap the mic and ground and would have solved so many peoples problems, thanks apple.
