When you get a 40 footer watch that 65 foot rule brother, you have a pick up bed so it will apply to you. When I was running hotshot I ordered a 38 foot trailer just for that reason and it saved me in Texas, Missouri, and Florida that is the three states that LITERALLY pulled out a tape measure on me, I know that everybody and their brother here on youtube runs a 40 and gets away with it but maybe somehow they are just under or at 65. I had a 2013 RAM crew cab long bed and a 38 foot trailer that put me at 63' 10''. My first trailer was a 32 footer and honestly I always ran out of weight before I ran out of deck (wish I would have kept it). Good Luck brother...your rig looks great!!

Good luck on the 40ft, they are constantly pushing back the delivery from PJ. I did nearly the same thing you did and bought what was available at 32ft. I have not had a lost load due to size yet.

Freightliner makes a business class truck that would be great for non-cdl hot shot. A lot of horse breeder's use them. Not sure if it has air brakes or not. Also, Peterbuilt and Kenworth have also just released a non-cdl truck to the market. No bed on those, but just an idea for someone else to looking to upgrade.

Where do you hook your straps at ? been doing flatbed in big trucks and hotshot going on 10 years now and I always use the flat hook type instead of the j hook and wrap around the rub rail, DOT never has said anything to me.the j hook can come loose and you can loose a strap...worse yet your load can become not fully secured. thats why alll trailer manufacturers put a rub rail on the trailers.Besides the j hook are harder to keep in place than the flat bar design when you are straping.

Secondly, I see many hotshotters using 4wd trucks... is that really necessary? I think the 2wd trucks typically have better fuel economy and heavier tow rating... so I'm curious why you guys choose the 4wd?

Yes. That is an option on most trailers. Its called a ratchet rail.

The important part is waight. The max gross would be 26000 pounds. That trailer he was running is probably 14000 lb. You would have to have it on paper reduced to 12000 gross. Then you could haul about 10,000 pound cargo. Take your rig empty to a cat scale so you know exactly how much you can add to it. Then when you're loaded if it's anywhere close to Max, be sure to scale it at a cat scale before you go across any weigh stations.

The difference between non Cdl and CDL is GWR . If your trailer and truck weight is over 26,000 pounds you need your cdl

I got my cdl permit and went to a 2.5 day class in West Virginia called CDL assist and got my cdl with no restrictions. My truck and trailer gross GVWR is 45400k

I need the dually because of high winds against the high profile trailers but the 14k GVWR prevents me from grabbing many loads. Just wondering why your situation wouldn't be better served in a 2500. I didn't want to suggest but more inquire
