I’ve broken the glass three times in my old topper. Now I have a piece of plexiglass in there so I didn’t have to worry about that one bit while I was drilling the holes.

This KZbin blows my mind. I have the exact same problem with the exact same window. Its used and every single window leaks. So I have a covered swimming pool when it rains. LOL

Hate slotted screws too. For that matter, I only like square head or torx 😁👍🏻 Great fix on the cap!

A couple comments; I would use thin rivet washers under the rivet heads to help spread the surface load (make sure you buy long enough (Stainless washers and rivets) I would also get some Paraffin wax and both melt drip and rub the aluminum joint down well for a lubricant before sliding back together. Dust is a big culprit in aluminum binding. This really is not an ideal hinge setup no matter what canopy or topper you own.

I never use phillips head screws when I can. I get torx head. less stripping.

When you put the screws in I’m guessing the window sits down a bit so you are not hitting glass. That’s so much for the video…off to purchase a rivet gun and rivets!

How were you able to find a replacement hinge for $90? I have the exact same problem on my truck cap and they said I needed to replace the rear window assembly for $680

That was back in 2017, when things were still cheap. I don't even know if they're still available any more. The website Where I found it for $90 is no longer up.

The original link I found is long gone. Now your best luck might be using a generic piano hinge.

Do you mean the clamps to hold it to the truck bed? Those are just universal aluminum truck cap clamps and you can get them on ebay/amazon or maybe local auto stores as well.

The term for this type of hinge is a "hurricane hinge" you can find a few options using that search term, but I don't see any that are this exact profile. I guess it won't matter if you're replacing both sides.

CAUTION: If your drill drops through the door frame too far it will hit the glass. If you hit the glass too hard it will shatter. Then you'll need to replace the glass too... Not that I have any experience with this or anything...

Yes exactly what I’m looking at now. Maybe marking the drill bit for depth will help. I would still have to drill carefully as I have been know to be a bull in a China shop! My topper shell was free and needs repairs . I’m looking for parts. The hurricane hinge and the front slider to slider boot. Any advice would be appreciated thank you 🙏

Yes I’m still at it drilling out those old rivets and they are hard very hard !! I have gone through many bits . No I don’t have a sharpener for my bits . Now I’m ending up using a grinder with cutting blade to take them down as it seems like the rivets are hardened steel . I’m going to be very happy to get the hung and get this back tighter. I took the glass out and contemplated buying plexiglass instead of real glass because I hear the glass gets broken to often. Thanks again for the second time!
