Күн бұрын

We've made it to the northwest tip of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and it is astounding up here. Waterfalls for days, interesting rock formations, and gorgeous rock-lined beaches are par for the course. Join us in the truck camper as we meander our way through Porcupine Mountains State Park (aka the Porkies) camping and hiking along the way.

Surprising to see Porkies so overcrowded this year! Pictured rocks was quite empty compared to previous years when I camped there first week of August. I figured the covid rush was over with everyone starting to travel more again, but I guess not. Thank you for sharing the video, been wanting to go back here but it's like a 14 hour drive for me so haven't made it back yet :)

We were amazed at how many campers and campgrounds there were in the Upper Peninsula. Most of the campers we saw had Michigan plates but it seemed like anywhere we drove we were mostly passing campers. I can understand why though, it's gorgeous up there.

OH! You started the video and got me hungry! ACK! I wasn't expecting that. Anyway, so cool to follow your travels! I guess this lifestyle makes sense after a thru-hike -- like, enjoy nature during the day and camp in (sorta) luxury at night! I really enjoy your videos. And I've only known one other person who put turmeric in his oatmeal (I'm not sure why, but I guess turmeric in the right amount must help health).

A few people have commented about the food this and last episode... we're going to have to put out some recipes along with each video 😂 This lifestyle has been a perfect transition for me. It preserves that sense of adventure and exploration but offers a bit more comfort and adaptability. I add the turmeric for it's anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant benefits but it also has a great flavor. My goal is around a 1/4tsp a day.

Thanks! Glad to have you along for the journey, I'm hoping we can do some more long trails soon 😁 We use 2 cameras primarily: a Sony ZV-1 and an iPhone XS. To be completely honest we use the XS for 90% of our footage these days. It's just so much easier and is always easily accessible which is key on trips like this. The ZV-1 gets used for shots that deserve a little extra clarity/definition or for night video/photography.

@@BackcountryBanter Thanks. A few years ago, I made a switch from lugging around heavy camera gear to just carrying my google pixel 4 (phone). I may go back to a stand alone camera in the future, but I’m still figuring out what I should carry in my backpack. I really enjoy your channel. I wish you both very happy trails.

Have you thought about putting some drone footage into these videos? Where you can it would be a pretty cool addition. Kind of like Foresty Forests vids
@BackcountryBanter
@BackcountryBanter 3 жыл бұрын
I would really like to incorporate drone footage. It's something I continually look into but can't really afford right now. On top of that I do have some reservations about it. I find drones pretty annoying when I'm out in the woods and can hear them buzzing in the distance so I'd want to be sure that I wasn't flying around people.

Gracias y'all ! I loved Picture Rocks. Took a boat ride to see them well. If I remember (1996) there are some honkin' big sand dunes along the north country trail around the PR locale. Enjoy it all!

Thanks! I think seeing Pictured Rocks by boat is the way to go, it's hard to see the cliffs when you are standing on them! We'll be heading toward Pictured Rocks (and potentially seeing those honkin' big sand dunes) in the next video 😁

Love it up there. Your video was interesting. Bear berries? Hideous worms in the stream - yikes! We went to some of those same falls with our doggos 2 years ago. It's been many years since we were at the Porkies. Live in Michigan but from the SW it is still a very long drive to get there :)

It is definitely well known and touristy which is not normally our jam, but it is sometimes fun. Same goes for staying in a traditional campground like we did. It's a bit nostalgic for me too.

I think those were horsehair worms, which are parasitic. They infect grasshoppers and crickets, causing them to seek water and drown themselves to complete the lifecycle. 😬
