I am a truck driver (NOT a scrap metals hauler, I haul bulk trailers) and I can tell you that he knew EXACTLY what happened and he got out of there as soon as he could. I'm not saying that he knew that he was overheight, but he knew that he hit that pedestrian bridge and skerted out of there.

That’s because Colorado has “some” common sense laws but not enough. A high school student was ran down in Colorado Springs today at this crappy 5 point intersection (poorly marked) in a dense business/shopping area at Barns/Austin Bluffs where the city planners or whoever set the speed limit at 40mph! A family lost their child and the people responsible for the stupid speed limit should be on death row! Just think, most drivers exceed all these speed limits by an average of 5-10mph! And the sun was shining directly at the driver from the east! You can’t make this 💩 up! Worse yet are all the fatalities on Powers. Speed limit is 55mph!!! And you still hit stop lights at that speed and everyone goes about 65 there!!! Shopping all around too!!! I did an experiment staying in the the right lane going 40 and passed everyone at the light who was going 65 😂🎉. Talk about human de-evolution DEVO was right! “I’m Speed Racer and I drive real fast, drive real fast, I’m gonna last” 😂🎉

@@cantstanddogs4776 Stopping distance with respect to a semi has a bunch of variables tho. Is the trailer full or empty? If full is it full of fiberglass insulation or ceramic tile? How much tread does he have on the tires? What about brakes? Has the truck just come down a long stretch of downhill and the brakes are red hot or just regular operating temperature? I don't know any of these but the driver maintained control and made the right move in my opinion.
@universalenergy2311
@universalenergy2311 Жыл бұрын
He was following way too closely. Per the Class A cdl book, follow at 1 second per 10 feet of body length. Add 1 second when traveling over 40mph, add another second for inclement weather. He has a 53’ trailer, plus we’ll add 10, let’s make it 15 feet for the tractor, in good weather. He should have had AT LEAST an 8-9 second gap between him and the cars in front. Math when driving a large vehicle like a semi, should always be exaggerated for safety. He didn’t, so he swerved. Also, since he was following too closely, he could have avoided the maneuver altogether If he was scanning out in front 16 seconds like he’s supposed to be, he would have noticed the potential hazard and began slowing down sooner, thus, negating the dangerous swerve into the left lane. Luckily, nobody was in the lane next to him. I haul fuel tankers in Northern California. I think you give him too much credit. I understand what you’re saying, but analyzing this from a professional drivers standpoint, he needs to be better.

In traffic cam videos of the crash, something sticking out of the top of the dump truck bed is scene visibly striking the bridge, causing what appears to be concrete to fall. Drivers behind the truck were narrowly able to avoid the falling concrete and debris on the road.

You need a class B CDL for any truck like this. Class A for one that is segmented. (Like a tractor trailer truck). While the driver is ultimately responsible, he's probably not the guy that loaded that scrap metal into the trailer. If his boss is telling him just take it or go home, when he complains then....

Whoever loaded that end dump demo trailer just HAD to get that one last chunk on the very top instead of leaving it for the next load. Literally without that one rectangular piece sticking up above the sides it would have cleared no problem. It might have saved him 5 minutes off the end of the day at best…nowhere near worth jt. Of course it’s just as much on the driver as well in my eyes, and more than likely the majority if not all of the blame, legal, and financial consequences were on him. As a driver you’re always responsible for making sure your load is legal on weight, dimensions, is safe, and properly secured. He should have climbed up and checked the load and if there was any doubt about clearance on his route either altered that route, or if that wasn’t possible refused the load until they unloaded that chunk. To my fellow truckers: Remember to never trust what the operator / contractor says without verifying it for yourself and while customer satisfaction matters, if they’re asking (or telling) you to do something you know isn’t kosher….they’re not worth having as a customer because they won’t be the ones responsible when something bad happens.

Local short trucks are always the most dangerous. They don't give a shit about anything except getting in loads as fast as possible so they can go home.

They get paid by the load. I hauled trash as a tractor trailer driver. I got paid by the HOUR, while my other former coworkers got paid by the load. If the wheels don't turn, you don't get paid. I broke down many times and used many replacement tractors to finish my day. My pay was still the same as long as I worked my regular hours.

Was he caught? According to the news article I found- 58-year-old driver from Hutchinson, Minnesota was cited for improper prevention against load shift. In traffic cam videos of the crash, something sticking out of the top of the dump truck bed is scene visibly striking the bridge, causing what appears to be concrete to fall. Drivers behind the truck were narrowly able to avoid the falling concrete and debris on the road.

besides those junk driver's Wayne mental set, he geared up, increases the volume of his cassette deck for believable denial of awareness and at the end of the day might become an unsung hero for "concrete probing" that bridge... as it is infrastructure: collapsing bridges became as normal as mass shootings in 1st grader schools and even less discussed in rallies than laws that lead to the dark ages. respect for the Volvo truck driver: that one was a woke "lanechanger: 😉, not waiting for anti-woke laws but simply saving his truck from debris falling on his head

@@tommyb261 You also do not build a bridge to be just high enough. You add a buffer zone. The ropes we use to do rescues have a weight limit to them but the rope will not break at that limit because it would be completely and utterly stupid to make that the true limit. There is a safety limit past that just incase you miss estimate the weight your lifting.

@@lindanwfirefighter4973 Pedestrian bridges are a PITA to use in the first place. The higher you go with them, the more stairs to climb and the longer, more space-consuming and more of a joke any ramp access becomes, so there's a tradeoff to be made.

@@lindanwfirefighter4973 Does not change the reason of this incident. I see you're opiniated question and it does seem to make sense, if there was another vehicle with unregulated obstruction it most definitely would have struck the bridge. Seems like it's construction did not include the architectural obscurity of unnecessary/illegal transport of certain goods. Mistakes happen, we all make them! Sorry to tell you, folks: Those are two different bridges in this video. The first bridge (where the truck is hitting the bridge) doesn't have a guardrail running under the bridge on the right side of the road. The reverse angle video (where a section of a similar bridge has collapsed) has a guardrail on the right side of the road. (Edit) Also, the reverse angle shows an Interstate Highway sign not very far from the bridge. In the video of the bridge strike; no sign. And the roadway stripping is very different. Short stripes and spaces in the first part. Long stripes and spaces in the second part.
