TWO big problems that are totally ignored not mentioned. I drive this section between Monteagle and Martin Springs at least once a day for the last year. 3 out of 4 times I see trucks with smoke roiling off their brakes indicating that the driver did not heed the warnings in the mandatory pull off at the top of the mountain. 1 out of 4 trips I see trucks bypassing the mandatory pull off completely. I have driven semi on that Monteagle down grade. I stopped in that brake check pull-off and do a full air brake check. Only then do I get back on the grade. State advisory truck speed is extremely conservative, but I suppose that’s the accident that doesn’t happen. I have thought about trucks keeping right, but the escape lane being on the left. This law is true for Nashville because they have left lane exits on at least two of their interstates. People get their undies in a ball because a big truck gets in a left lane. Just stop and think how mad you get when someone won’t give you room to move over and multiply that by 65 to 72 feet the length of a tractor trailer truck.

And that is part of the problem. They go through these fast schools and pass the test yet a lot of them come from areas where the only hill for a hundred miles is a highway overpass. They should have to have another test and certification for steep grade driving. I do not know since I am not a driver but there has to be a way to do something like that. A 22 year old kid that drives local in Houston, TX does not have the experience to be on 5% grades or steeper. The run from Flagstaff down to Phoenix is one and from Flagstaff west is another. Those kids just do not know how much they do not know. And if they get away with it once they think they can do it all the time. (also I am pointing to "kids" but it can apply to anyone any age if they do not have the experience).

Seeing smoldering Christmas presents and cabbage on the road was horrible and something I'll never forget People don't respect the mountain anymore and that goes equally for drivers and 4 wheelers alike When I go down either side I pick out a group of traffic and stay just behind it and watch them very closely especially for hot smelling or smoking breaks There should be jail time for drivers that don't stop in the inspection area before going down the mtn, and alot of trucks don't

the exceptions to keep right rules for trucks are well known. The problem is that an escape ramp off the left lane is not easily recognized as falling under the exception that allow trucks to be in the left-hand lane to 'proceed in a direction of travel' as would be the case in distribution lanes approaching a freeway intersection.

I drove a truck-tractor 1991-2018 and the number of times I've seen anyone in the pull-off area adjusting their brakes I can count on one hand and have most of my fingers leftover. Having automatic slack adjusters just means we don't have to climb under the truck or trailer ourselves to adjust them like we used to do BUT you can make them adjust themselves. When someone turns on their turn signal indicating a lane change it's because they want to change lanes NOW, not a minute or two from now. As long as your truck has a good engine brake, you will practically use no to very little braking coming down. The biggest thing is starting the hill off at a proper speed or gear for the weight of your load. If you start out too fast and don't brake down and gear down, then you will use excessive brake which could put you in a bad situation.

Signs don’t matter. A large portion of truck drivers today cannot read, write or communicate in English which is direct violation of 49 CFR 391.11(b)(2). The FMCSA (federal motor carrier safety agency) has illegally deregulated federal law striking english proficiency as a requirement to obtain a cdl. This is in part why so many trucks end up in places where they shouldn’t be and fail to follow warning signs. Honestly it is time for a large truck accident law firm to start a class action lawsuit in the billions agains the FMCSA and states that fail to uphold 49 CFR 391.11(b)(2) with cdl permits and licenses. For those who want to seek such a case, the FMCSA has sent many letters, memos etc to DOT offices in every state encouraging, altering and instructing that the English proficiency requirement to obtain a cdl and during random DOT inspections to be disregarded and not enforced. If the commercial driver who killed or permanently injured your loved one does not speak or comprehend English, you definitely have large settlements waiting for you if you’re willing to fight for them. Doesn’t matter if the driver didn’t have a cdl or not simply because of the illegal deregulation has forced DOT officers to avoid inspecting any commercial vehicle where the driver appears not to speak English. It is impossible to have a translator for every language spoken by these immigrants at every DOT inspection site and it cost tax payers time and money for them to use translator services. Just to add some context there are currently over 1000 DOT weigh stations in operation with tens if not hundreds of thousands of non English literate drivers behind the wheel or a cmv.

Ya know dude, sometimes things happen beyond normal control and when there is a solution to it if you are prepared then by all means the precaution should be taken. I have been down that stretch many times also. I have also done things 1000 times without incident. Then there was that 1000 and first time. I really hope you are not an airplane pilot.

Bro got ptsd. Your equipment should be in proper working condition. That ramp is for an emergency not an exit 🤦‍♂️
@killer2600

Having equipment in working order doesn't preclude mechanical failure or operator error that results in brake failure. If we are to assume that vehicles on the road are ensured to be in working order - not prone to failure - and that licensed drivers are not prone to human/driver error then 4 wheelers should never be in accidents, only crashes. Because accidents arise when you do things right but the wrong outcome happens; crashes occur because you didn't do things right and you weren't lucky that time.

@@vicpetrishak7705 it's obvious you have never driven through this area. The runaway ramps need to go uphill. Take a look at the amount of mountain that would need to be removed to make your proposal happen when you take your first drive through that area.

No trucks in the left lanes. Period. Don't care. If the highway was built wrong that's a DOT issue. Keep right and slow down if you're at risk. It's very simple.
