Great vid guys...my home town...been driving all the tracks from south of town right up to - for last 30yrs!😊 Being so remote, normal COMs don't always work..neither does UHF... like it does in the city, as they only work great with repeaters...where although we have them all around cities, not remote towns or highway's.. Therefore, all of our crew up north west WA although still use the UHF (477mhz) CBs for close general contact.. BUT...once we leave the town, we then leave the UHF CB on scan, simply pickup the AM CB handset and chat away. As we all know that the UHF 4watts is very limited for distance...5km if lucky! Instead, the best cheapest option for long distance communications in remote areas is to fit/install a 'back up' CB - this being the 'AM' CB (or 27mhz). Out of the box, most AM (27mhz) 4watts CBs should get you talking to another out to around 30+kms away. This is well after UHF has failed at 5kms! If you have an AM CB unit with built in 'SSB'...once SSB button is pressed, you can now talk out to around 70kms due to the CB now legally putting out 12watts (YES IT IS LEGAL and has been since 1972...just some facts for any knowitalls) instead of the 4watt UHF (477mhz) To get one...these AM CBs are plenty around like many can be found on eBay for just $20 and up to $120.. OTHERWISE...Uniden do sell very modern, nice AM CBs for around $79. If you want to splash out another $100, then buy the Uniden 980 SSB...as we did buying 6! What's the SSB button? The SSB is built into the radio where if you are talking away on AM and you start to fade, you click the SSB button which then gives you 12watts and with our Uniden 980 AM/SSB CB, got us 61kms at sea level (on a small incline, gets over 100kms is easy) For everyone else thinking of doing this, a) YES FIT ONE! AM (27mhz) CBs are 100% LEGAL! b).The difference between the madhouse UHF CB users out there in the cities and that of AM (27mhz) CB users are is that all are professional, polite, helpful, and friendly on all of the AM CBs' 40 channels... c) Why users different is because the older generation are still using and manning the AM CB since the 1980s from home and never have or will go across to yobbo land UHF.. On the 3 Jan, 2023, there was an emergency involving a 4wder who had rolled his vehicle 300kms west of Alice springs with injuries. NONE of the EPIRB/PLBs worked as these devices couldn't penetrate the heavy cloud reach the satellites. Even two other people assisting both their satellite phones could not penetrate through to the satellites.. About 20 mins later in a heap of panic, a couple of 4x4 drivers who stopped to ask if all ok, all the 4x4s had a AM CB fitted, so first guy switched his AM CB to the emergency channel. After about 20 seconds a guy answered from 63km away, so he explained the situation to him about the accident and he contacted the authorities from his end. Just 2.5hrs later, the RFDS had already diverted a plane and was about to land on the highway about 500m from the accident. (btw-the satphones didn't start to get through until midnight, 3 hours after!!) If these 2 guys did not turn up with their backup 'AM' (27mhz) CB's, their would have been 2 fatalities Anyway,. just thought I'd mention this for the future as many of the pro 4x4 shows (a4a, Roothy, etc) have a AM/SSB unit covertly fitted up under the seats under the seat cover (so as not to upset the sponsors)...so they can ACTUALLY stay in contact with their video crew of whom are always 20kms away, lost or kilometres ahead.. If anyone needs more info about the AM CBs, message me, happy to help. Also love the channel, if your ever back in town,.bang us through a message 👍👍👍 Cheers, F.
@elnick.adventuresАй бұрын
Thanks for sharing that info mate! We will definitely be taking it on board. It's so good to hear the AM CB is still a reliable tool for communication.

Unfortunately we don't know what happened to those guys who didn't return, there may be a justifiable explanation but I can't think on any. At the end of the day they need to live with their actions, You guys, and the others did an amazing job. That is the Aussie culture - help your mates.
