It's sad that all of those British wagons have gone. We could recognise a Foden or and ERF from way off, now they all look the same. I feel lucky that my near 50 years on the road caught the end of the "Old School Era" My Dad drove before me, and when i went out with him for the day in the school holidays, all I wanted to be, was a lorry driver, and it came to pass.

When my dad bought his first f88 it was like stepping into a starship compared to the old bedfords we had. There was literally no comparison, like someone else said- no wonder Volvo and Scania took over the British truck scene

Great pics, 46 years now and still in the saddle. I can remember so many of the names on those wagons. I hate the new lorries with a vengeance, all the pointless electronic tat, but overall still enjoy my work because we're left alone to get on with the job and there's still some decent banter and mutual piss taking, just as it was back when i started.

Goosebumps all over . I remember as a dutt going with my late father in his “ split-screen “ Atkinson , Scammell Crusader and all sorts of others . Crash box gearboxes and such . You really had to be able to drive those beasts oh and no power steering either! Yes I’m a wagon driver myself . Hate the auto bollox we drive now 😡😡😡 . My all time favourite wagon then and still is the Volvo F88 / 89 / 86 . Where I lived in Cardiff, my best mates father owned “ Glyn John Transport “ he had loads of Volvo’s as did Heanor Haulage back in the day . 💪❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

I drove a Leyland Matador in the early 70s, A VOLVO F12 and FL12 in the late 80s and when I retired I drove an F12 and F16 and the difference between the 1970s and the 2020s trucks is amazing. But what hasn't altered is the speed limits!!. Why? when todays trucks actually stop when you put the brakes on.

I loved lorries when I was very small, my particular favourites were the ones with two front axles and one rear. The "Chinese Six", as I recently discovered.
@georgerenton965
@georgerenton965 Жыл бұрын
I once heard that the purpose of the “ Chinese Six “ was to give added traction, but surprisingly it was when backing the trailer into docks too load and unload them. The “ wagon, and drag “ setup where the lorry pulled a “ full trailer “ that has a turntable with a steerable front axle connected with a drawbar, the lorry has a pintle hitch receiver mounted on the front of the chassis rail. When putting the trailer into a dock, the lorry disconnects from the drawbar, then turns around, and hooks up to the drawbar facing the trailer. The driver can then control the the trailer by pushing the drawbar in the direction required to steer the trailer into position, however if the trailer is loaded, and the road surface is say, cobblestones, and it’s slick, then the front of the lorry might slide of to the side one way or another, there by not permit the driver to have full control to direct the trailer where it needs to go. I remember seeing a few of these when I was young growing up in Scotland, but I’ve never seen a Chinese six in North America. Can anyone tell me if this is factual ? I do recall back in the day, how slimy the cobbles where in and around docks, and markets where fresh fish in boxes packed with ice would be handled. Does it ever rain in the UK ? 🤣

Unfortunately it's the gradual and seemingly inevitable Americanization of the language that degrades so many of our words. All the time I was a long-distance lorry driver we drove lorries or wagons. There were no trucks, of whatever kind or wheel arrangement. Only the Yanks had trucks. But that came to an end twenty or thirty years ago - at first only among non-lorry-drivers, of course, but now even some of them talk about their 'trucks'. It also creeps in at the same time from other directions, because so many people from the Continent or Asia now learn their English using material made by Americans. We just have to accept it, I suppose, unpleasant though it is, because there's no way to stop it.
