Hey Robbie! I'm not sure when you started trucking and it's really none of my business either; but I remember back in the mid 1980's and early 1990's when JB Hunt and Schneider would pull load out of Florida and California for $0.50 (50 cents) per mile, just to get move freight out of those states, which was crazy as all get out in my theory.

Question for trucking USA When do you receive payment for the load ? When loaded / when delivered or on invoice and or 20th month following. Enjoy your relaxed driving.

Transportation markets have to be one of the most manipulated there is. Fuel for example is one commodity which can change value drastically while it's sitting in a tank in the ground already paid for, and the price change can happen based on a holiday weekend or market speculation somewhere far removed from the place where the fuel sits. Remember the "fuel shortage" of the 1970s and how OPEC played into that? That's got to be the same thing behind the scenes in transportation. Just like all those warnings on your sun visor in the first half of the video, the market is so regulated with release of liability rules they can almost crash the market just to see how low they can push the rates all while being exempt from consequences. Very interesting insight into how making money in trucking is not as simple as just driving a truck. Really enjoyed this one, thanks for sharing!

First of all I love your videos and thanks for sharing. Second of all I love your your new truck. The automatic must be a huge improvement over grabbing gears with an 18 speed Eaton-Fuller. My question regarding the business is how do you determine your cost per mile to start with? I'm sure tolls, wear and tear and fuel are huge factors. However, depending on where you go there has to be some variables in let say fuel costs. If your in the hills and mountians a lot then more fuel goes out the stacks. If your down south or parts of the midwest where it's all pretty much flat running, Thus better fuel economy. How is that figured into your cost per mile? I never really understood how that aspect of it was determined. My Father was a trucker for 36 years but he wasn't an owner / operator. He drove a day cab for the same company all those years and got paid hourly. That worked out great for him and he was home every night and it paid the bills. I do realize it works much different for you long haul guys. Once again, thank you for these awesome videos.

I have been in trucking for 30+ years. I don't think I have ever heard a truck driver, especially an owner-operator say " rates were too high ".

Hell, if a trucker isn't at least a dollar a mile, he's out of business.

I found the rates cycled. Like you, I would bank the high rates because I knew it was temporary. Usually the short game will open up first. I've been retired for a number of years. I like all of the new tools you guys can use, but like anything else, more have their hands out wanting your money, hours of service continues to change, and trucks are more complicated and expensive every year.

Do the refer loads pay any more than general freight?
@evolutionadmin13134 жыл бұрын
Depends on where & what commodity. In general reefer pays more but there's more costs, insurance, trailer, fuel, unloading fee

What is your opinion about load boards such as Uber Freight and Convoy?
@evolutionadmin13134 жыл бұрын
@Jan Schlossar freight apps like Uber Freight do not care about relationship with a transport company, they just care about covering load for their intended price point. I did $100k of business with Uber Freight in 2018. Convoy is garbage rates before the May downward shift in rates, payment is 30 days unless app stayed on & you booked load through app for whatever rate they posted it. It's Alot of food, beverage & paper loads, all very heavy & alot of bs
@evolutionadmin13134 жыл бұрын
@Jan Schlossar it wasn't made a shady deal with freight agents. Capacity shrinked & spot rates dropped significantly so that shippers forced a re-bid if already contracted freight or they paid penalty to force re-bid. Now rates for spot are lower then contract Here's where it's interesting for commercial loan financing, if you default on one piece of equipment, truck or trailer, the bank takes all the equipment & whatever cargo is on trailer at time. Bloodbath is when company reserve run out & have to take whatever so they don't default on any commercial loans thus losing all financed equipment
@evolutionadmin13134 жыл бұрын
@Jan Schlossar basically in late April to May, shippers / manufacturer / Distribution warehouse providers forced re-bid of already contracted lanes to that of the market rate which had dropped significantly. Example person I know had contract dealing with frozen food for major grocery chain in Midwest, he was contracted for the $4-5/mile range including drop trailers, in May they said renogotiate to $1.50-1.75/mile. He refused & they terminated the contract. Ikea did same thing with Midwest contract with different person I know, they cut rate twice since May. Lot of companies have basically went to paper rates, as it's only good for the paper it's written on
@evolutionadmin13134 жыл бұрын
@Jan Schlossar minimum threshold is trucks just driving back empty, it's something I did few times & other companies were actively doing in Spring that or just booking a partial to cover the fuel to get back to more profitable freight area
@evolutionadmin13134 жыл бұрын
@Jan Schlossar frac sand is paying between $6-10/mile in Texas oilfield right now but it's one way, you deadhead empty back for sand & wait time is not paid (some do some don't)

A trucker make less than a walmart worker, i used t be a trucker, found out i make less after a year so i quit and go into plumbing, make way more.
@MrRld19604 жыл бұрын
I read somewhere the other day where banks and other finance companies are going to stop financing trucks. For someone that has or wants 1 truck anyway. You will have to have 3 or more trucks before they consider finance. You will also need 20% in a maintenance account.

Your statement on rates dropping 30%, why is that happening? Another thing I just noticed on newer trucks is I no longer see the large double stack exhaust pipes, have motors been improved so much it's no longed needed?
@johndonovan70184 жыл бұрын
it was NEVER needed. the old geezers that would burn diesel at the rate of 2mpg downhill with a tail wind are either dead of old age or bankrupt.
@100pyatt4 жыл бұрын
Agreed, it was a vanity thing, nothing to do with a "need" ... Most trucks now are lighter with horizontal exhaust instead of stacks.... And less exhaust system to replace when necessary
@100pyatt4 жыл бұрын
The big decline is going to weed out all of the people that aren't at the top of their game with efficiency....a lot of the people with the older trucks that sucked down the fuel are going to continue to be going out of business
@100pyatt4 жыл бұрын
@Jan Schlossar definite motivation is crushing the owner operators and small carriers by the mega fleets. The ugly ELD mandate was setting the stage for the coming slaughter. Like you said, these big fleets do not want people to be owning their own trucks giving them any competition.... Greed rules the trucking industry, especially the bureaucracy behind it

Did I miss when you explained why the rates fall? Appears that for every 500 point increase in the stock market freight rates decrease and another home in my neighborhood puts a blue tarp on their roof. The marina’s here have lots of new $175K boats but along the side of the road they’re many used late model trucks for sale. Why don’t people ever talk about a grocery order that only a few years ago cost about $95, now is $150! At $1.90 per mile, are you making less than a $15/hr cashier at Walmart?
