My dad started driving in 1946. Bought his first new truck, a White Mustang in 1958. Had to quit driving when they found out he was diabetic. Hauled my first load of gasoline on Feb. 2, 1974. The day U turned 21. My last day was July 28, 2016. When I started the job was fun. When I retired it had stopped being fun for about 10-15 years.

Started driving in 1964. Finally quit in 2008. Videos and the old trucking songs remind me of how good a profession it was when I started. Not so great now. To much regulation. Thanks for posting.

There's actually less regulation now. Think about it; today, a guy can get off the plane fresh from Eastern Europe, India, China, or Africa, get a government stipend to go through CDL school, and a couple of months later he's got his own truck and his own authority and he's booking loads through brokers. That would have been flat out impossible before deregulation.

I use to drive an old 1947 Diamond-T for ATSF in 1947 and 1948. These truck pictures bring a lot of memories.

My 1st job was a concrete block co. 67' DODGE CNT 900 w/ a 238 Detroit & 1 16 speed spicer, 2 sticks. later conv. to air over. No a/c, radio, air ride. did have ps. lol & a hyd. clutch, but man I fun driving & learning . We had 8 of them & a DODGE CNT 900 tractor with a "BIG ASS" 318 Detroit pulling a 27' trailer dump.. use to gross out with 90K plus on that trailer. One of myfavorite trucks to this day.

And respectful/ courteous to other truckers & vehicles. You'd stop to help a felloe driver if he was broken down. Now a days even drivers from your same company pass right by if they see you broke down.

And you can add no air seat, no air ride suspension and no power steering when I started. But overall we were a lot better off and happier than truckers have been in at least a couple decades. I really enjoyed the first twenty years of my career.

Many thanks that took me back 40 years, i had lost the song a long time ago. The pictures are superb. I cant go back now to Lorry Driven, we tended to call them Wagons not Trucks. That should tell you how long i been Truck Driven.

I Can remember in 1958 when my Dad got a new 850 Ford tandem with a 534 and he raved about how much more power it had than the 1955 Chevy he replaced! I had a chance to drive a 1980 ford with a 534 and all I recall is the fact that it had no power and burned gas at a rate of 3 miles to a gallon.

George......... Started truckin after five years in the factory. Only trucked 25 years, from '69-middle of 1994. It all changed after that. Trucks got fancy, drivers got gay. That's just my guess from seein em in tankie tops and flip flops! Still love hearing trucking songs today. It's true about those cute little truck stop waitresses. My wife tried it in a little farmin town for a month or two. She was bringin home more money than me and my truck. Had to make her quit before I lost her to a JBHunt driver or some guy in an Autocar. I'm older and wiser now but I'm still looking for that girl wearin nothin but a smile and a towel in the picture on the billboard in the field along the big ole highway. "Model T says hi good buddy!" No offense that's how we talked back then.

Used to have guys fill your tanks, check your oil and tires. These days you wait in a long line to be abused by an unhappy 5ft 300 pounder who can't understand normal things.
