Mostly in comments I see Tata engines for ghat & Leyland for mileage & flat roads....plz understand those days r gone ! Leyland in this case has longer wheelbase & driver couldn't negotiate the curve in single attempt, whereas Tata had lesser wheelbase between front & drive axles. In same case if Tata had been brought reverse, with same struggle Tata would moved forward. If torque is less in Leyland, how come in 2nd attempt it was able to climb ? Plz note torque graph of truck engines are flat right from 1200RPM to 2500RPM....! So increasing the engine produces only higher HP not torque ! Here in 1st attempt driver would have not increased engine to higher RPM than 2nd attempt. So to conclude its all about HP, torque - RPM range, drive axles either single or double, wheelbase technically. Apart from these, its mainly with driver, when he is turning, at what speed, long cut, gear selected at beginning of the curve, EXPERIENCE MATTERS !!!

I would say the Leyland driver did the right thing... Eventhough there was space to take the turn and climb in one go ( depending upon the turning radius ), it is advisable to do a reverse and then climb the steep to save the tyres... Everyone would say the driver is not good but infact he's got good experience with these situations... That doesn't mean Tata truck driver is not good... NB : I'm a big TATA fanboy... 🫣

Bro no offence. But stopping and moving on a ghat curve that too upward create more pressure on tyres, and can damage the brake drums and liners! And moreover here in this video Ashok Leyland bit longer than tata and have lower turning radius than tata, and have more weight than tata i guess. So it doesn't really matter how they're driving their vehicles. And both drivers are well experienced so they know what to do! Both trucks and drivers did well. If I'm wrong I'm sorry. Its more about the drivers than the trucks in this video. both the drivers took the L turn way more than required. in both the drivers, the Ashok Leyland driver took a broader L turn , double than required and that is the reason he had to return in reverse. whenever you start getting your driver training on a long vehicle , the second chapter in locomotion you are taught is making the L turns. also this we need to keep in remember that both the drivers had a nervousness while climbing this wet hill because if your long vehicle takes L turn shorter than required , your rare bogies or rare wheelset would come out of the road and the vehicle may take a uncontrollable tilt or sway which can flip over the whole vehicle into a stupid accident. I appreciate the caution by both the drivers and the assistant from the Leyland truck (he should care more for his safety) but this whole episode is more about the driving abilities than the vehicle performance. There are only few heavy vehicle companies who can do better than Ashok Leyland in long hauls and surely Tata is not one of them for now. Tata heavy vehicles have started coming good now , but an Ashok Leyland vehicle means honesty, performance and good returns.

A number of things are involved here: 1. Experience of the driver. 2. Age, and mileage of the truck, 3. Size= capacity of the engine, especially if it is naturally aspirated ( not turbocharged or supercharged) eg. A 13litre straight six would be superior to a 9litre straight six. 4. If blown ( charged ) are they both charged. 5. Are the tyres on the same condition!

The comparison should be Tag axle vs Pusher axle. Both Tata and Leyland give both options. A vehicle of same length4 with tag axle will have smaller turning radius as compared to one with pusher axle. Tag is preferable where there is load on one side and empty run on other, ie Tanker,Bulker,RMC,etc. Pusher is preferred where load is full on one side and more than 12 ton below capacity on other side.
