Genuinely surprised to see no mention of any 300ci / 4.9L i6 powered Ford Trucks so far. Those were known to run forever with little maintenance. There are many stories of how they just wouldn't die when they put in the engine killer solution back during Cash For Clunkers. Every other vehicle would die after a couple minutes of idle, and be towed out the the salvage lot, but all the 300 i6's would go back there under their own power.

You lost me when you said "According to JD Powers." It's all about who spends the most $. The data can be manipulated any which way to fit their narrative. Kia and Hyundai with all their engine issues top the list? Mini is #11 above likes of Mazda, Subaru, and Honda? I guess I am old school and keep the car forever. In the few studies I looked into, the "problems" are stuff like wind noise, slow infotainment boot up time.

We are currently on our 4th Ranger. They’ve proven to be durable pickups with the exception of the 3.0 V6. Our current Ranger is a 11 XLT super cab 4X4 with the 4.0L V6. Before adding the K&N intake and the FlowMaster exhaust as well as a free flow exhaust manifold, I was getting 19 mpg on the freeway with the cruise set on 75mph. Now with the mods I’m consistently getting 23mpg. We get 5-6 feet of snow every winter and our Ranger has never gotten stuck. It’s now 12 years old but has only 35K miles on it. I change the oil every 4K miles with Kirkland full synthetic motor oil and I change the front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluids every 30K miles. I guess this is why we get 250+K miles from all of our vehicles. If I didn’t need the hp and torque then I would have opted for the 2.3L 4cyl naturally aspirated engine. Those 2.3L can get 500K miles easily. Not only does our Ranger haul a yard of gravel, dirt and fire wood, but after the intake and exhaust mod’s, it now hauls ass too. 😁

I nearly bought a Ranger in 2005 and regret it. What put me off was the untried 2.5 diesel. It was a new engine replacing the previous 2.6 gas found in the Courier. Don't know if they did have problems but after 8 years I never sore them on the road. They didn't seem to last.

@@2DogsVlogs I’ve never owned or ever heard of a diesel engine in a Ranger. The most durable engine in the Ranger was the 2.3L naturally aspirated gasoline engine. We’ve own 2 of them with the 2.3L. The first one we put over 500K miles on it and the second one we put almost 700K miles on it. Back then we changed the oil every 3K miles with conventional Valvoline motor oil. We now change our oil every 6 months (which is only about 1,500 miles) with Valvoline full synthetic (high mileage) oil, even though our Ranger has only 36K original miles. We change the oil on our Subaru’s every 5K miles with Valvoline full synthetic (high mileage) oil. My wife’s Outback has less than 30K miles and my Forester just hit 13K miles. High mileage oil has additives that reduce engine wear.

How many transmissions have you gone through? It is rare for a Chevy transmission to last more than 150,000 miles. Dodge Dakota was a piece of junk. One was lucky to get 100,000 miles out of them without a major repair. Few of those lasted past 175,000 miles before being junked. Ford Ecoboost engines are nowhere nearly as reliable as the 5.0 V8 Coyote. The second generation 5.0, which was sold from 2015 to 2017, may have been the most reliable pickup engine ever made. Then Ford messed it up in 2018.....

The toughest most reliable workhorse truck I ever owned was a 60's 1 ton Dodge power wagon with the 383 hemi and 4 speed transmission. The one that was equal to it was an old 1 ton international with a 401 v8. I have never had anything more tough or that could take as much abuse as those trucks. We used our Internationals like tractors. In fact when we got a tractor stuck , many times we used the international to pull them out. My power wagon used to push through heavy brush and push over smaller cedar and pine trees and bust drifts. Can't do that with new trucks.

@Walt Moore you have that backwards. AMC was not producing many of their own parts. They cut deals with others to build their products for awhile. I took a 401 out of an old international grain truck and put into a 1974 Jeep Cherokee. I had a 1976 J10 that had a blown engine and used parts out of a Ford 360 to get it back on the road. AMC in the 60's and 70's was struggling and using a lot of parts from other manufacturers. You could bolt Ford and International parts right in with no modifications or very few.

2010 Tundra SR5 extended cab 4x4 owner. I own a lawn care business & pull a trailer daily. 260,000 miles so far and I haven't had a single breakdown. I always change the oil myself at 5,000 miles with Supertech 5W20 synthetic and a Toyota oil filter, never replaced transmission fluid. Replaced the drive belt once so far. Never flushed the coolant completely, but I've replaced a gallon or so a few times. I installed a new water pump a couple years ago because I heard a bearing squealing. Two sets of factory spark plugs, countless sets of front brake pads & rotors because they warp easily and the trailer I'm sure is to blame. I'll buy more old Tundras for as long as I can find them.

Could not agree with you more - Ive got a dakota with the 4.7 in it and even after moving up several tire sizes it lost NONE of its power or throttle response. Crank shaft and cam shaft sensors were replaced and the truck is insanely reliable. Its 4x4 prowess is insane - I know I can depend on it at ANY given time. I have jumped hills and it lands like it was built for it - 75mph on Klevar 265s 75 15s on dirt roads no issue - 35 mph offroad easy - will not get you stuck in mud or sand unless its you who did it. I loved that truck so much I bought a dodge durango - same generation with the 4.7 except this ones AWD and this impresses the heck out of me. Gave it a 2 inch life, 275 75 18s, 2 chamber muffler exhaust - also insane prowess in mud and rough terrain. Tons of room in it for taking the family literally anywhere at any given time. This also starts up every time, I should upgrade sensors while Im thinking about it - only weak spot is ball joints but I have spares. At no point do I ever feel worried Im going to be stranded, or cant go somewhere because of weather. The transfer case output shafts must be made of tungsten or something - because you literally cant put enough force on the system to break it. Rock freaking solid. Ive owned rams, fords and chevies - I wont buy chevys anymore because of the transmissions but my trucks both have 200k on them and transmissions are shifting like they should even after everything I put them through. Cant say enough things, I love that Im seeing more and more dakotas in my area where people are putting money and upgrades into them. I think I started a thing in my local town.

I think a cool reliable vehicle is the first generation Ford raptor. That 6.2 L engine was basically the one in 250 fleet trucks you see everywhere with 500,000 miles. It was changed a bit for the raptor I believe but it was built With reliability at least partially in mind, and that's more than can be said for most engines these days. It's very rare to find a performance vehicle that's just as if not more reliable than its counterparts

We had the Ram V10 where I was stationed to tow things. We had other trucks to get around in, but one day that v10 was the only thing available for me to run tasks in. I hopped in it for the 1st time, started it up and pressed down on the gas and spun the rear tires. Like a kid who'd just found $5 in the house, I was like "ooohhhh shiiiiiet!!!' It was powerful and fast for its time, but it was heavy as a tank and when it hit bumps, you felt all of it. After driving it a few times, I felt it was best suited just to tow loads because that pickup had almost toooo much power in it when it wasnt towing extra weight. Basically a Viper engine thrown into a hooptie.

It’s incredibly slow but still surprisingly fun when wanting to be. has literally done everything Ive needed it to do from towing my other vehicles to hauling tile, furniture, etc and has RARELY ever let me down. Never been a fan of Dodge. But in 2009, a friend of mine had to go on his missionary trip. I gave him the payoff on his truck and I could not believe how awesome that 5.7 Ram drove. My friends in the neighborhood are all Ford and Chevy guys and by the time I moved away from that neighborhood 2/3 of them were driving ram trucks. They ride great with the air suspension and I have a 2014 that I bought new with 115,000 miles on it that still has the original brakes and a haul an 18 foot trailer full of 4 wheelers up and down the East Coast at A high rate of speed. I own Chevrolets, Fords, and Dodges But my 10-year-old truck ain’t going nowhere. $78,000 to buy the same truck I have which I bought for $42,000. Not gonna happen.

The Hilux is challenged by the Mitsubishi L200 also known as the Strada or Triton depending in region. This one is proving itself to be one hell of an off roader. There's also the Isuzu D-Max and the international Ford Ranger, a version of which is sold in the US with a gas engine. But international Ford Ranger has turbo diesels. There's also the Nissan Navarre. Along with the VW Amarok, you have a very successful genre of small pickups that are powered by turbodiesels but one that's absent in the US market. Toyota's line up of pickups doesn't end there with the Hilux. In Asia and Japan, you have the HiAce and Lite Ace cab over pickups. In some regions you have the 79 series Land Cruiser, kind of like the Land Cruiser idea of the Jeep Gladiator.

Bought an '80 W-150 Powerwagon in '02, typical Clubcab long box, 4" lift, 360, 4spd. Usual Dodge electrical gremlins, in a plain Jane truck. 9-12 MPG. Daily is a '18 Powerwagon, with all the bells and whistles. And i freaking love it, why, because I loved my '15 Powerwagon. I live in the rust belt of Minnesota, where corrosive anti-icing products make driving possible, and expensive, because of rust issues. I retired my Dakota a couple years back. Ranger frames were real good until 1993 with the body style change, after 1992 Ford started making them very cheap. The S-10s after 1993 has problems with the door hinges and that wouldn't be much of a problem if it was a Ranger, they are easy to replace, the S-10s are welded on and it's near impossible to get them right, I had a 1995 s10 and a professional body shop gave up on trying to fix the door hinge and only charged me for the cost of the wasted parts. It was actually worse when I got the truck back. My ideal truck would be a 1991 Ranger with the S-10 4.3 v6 and 5 speed manual.

@@DueyMiller-rk9dr I feel ya there and that’s lucky with those miles. Regular maintenance really does suffice for these trucks but you are correct. I know of several fleet vehicles where the oil was changed religiously that have well over 400k. Carbon build up is what caused the problems. Super pro tip. Keep your foot out of it and keep clean oil in it, they are excellent engines.

I had a good friend who was a mechanic at a Chevrolet dealership for many years. The dealership closed when the owner retired and sold the building. My friend opened an independent auto repair shop. This was at the time that S-10's were quite popular. However, it seemed that he worked on an EXTRAORDINARY number of S-10 pickups and Blazers. I once asked him if this was due to the number of them on the road, or because they were just junk. He paused briefly before giving the kind response, "Well, I don't think they made 'em as good as they could have." That seemed to explain why, of all the vehicles of all makes he worked on daily, roughly one third were S-10's: They weren't made as good as they could have been.
