On February 26, 1999, a cemetery worker in DeKalb County, Georgia discovered the skeleton of a male child in a wooded area near a church cemetery. He was initially known as Clifton John Doe, then given the nickname “Dennis.” The child remained unidentified until June 2022 when he was identified as 6-year-old William DaShawn Hamilton. His mother, Teresa Ann Bailey Black, was arrested and charged with murder, child cruelty, aggravated assault, and concealing his death.
In 2022, a DeKalb County Grand Jury returned an indictment against his mother in connection with his murder. She was taken into custody in Phoenix, Arizona, on June 29, 2022 and was extradited to Georgia.
In January 2024, Teresa Black was found guilty of concealing William's death, but not guilty of all other charges. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison, the maximum sentence allowed under Georgia law.
The break in the case came when a tip was called into the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children from a someone who knew Teresa and William back in 1998 and had been searching for William ever since.
Ava, who preferred to keep her last name private, says she was very close with Teresa and William when they lived in Charlotte, North Carolina. She often took care of William and described him as a fun, witty, adventurous and intelligent little boy who loved to dance.

REMEMBER HIS NAME William Deshawn Hamilton This story is so disturbing. I can only imagine what this poor baby boy went through in his short life. His eyes are so haunting, so soulfull, so abandoned, you can tell in his face that life was so difficult for him. Not knowing if he belonged in this world or not. No child no matter what their ages should never feel unwanted and unloved. Sadly we are a throw away society. We throw things away so easily and that also includes our own children. That young man deserved a better life. He deserved parents who would have gladly taken him in and give him the love and attention he so desperately needed. He needed a gentle loving home that could nurture him. I know he has a name and is now being remembered but there are still other children out there that are still in this wretched existence that need to be found before it's too late. We must bring attention to their plight as well. Rest in Paradise, Close your eyes and think of only happy thoughts. You were found and were given your name. Rest easy in the arms of the angels, You are home now, you are wanted, loved and cherished.

Stories like this one are the worst of the worst. I feel so bad that this little boy doesn't have a headstone. I can't figure out why they would place an unengraved stone where he was found and not at least use that stone to mark his grave with his name. That's just not making sense to me. I don't think you could call a six year olds death natural causes, something else I never understood. What bothers me most besides being forgotten in life and left out like trash is that he can't at least be remembered in death with a marked grave. Just breaks my heart. A little boy like AJ Freund has a beautiful marker with momentous left for him everywhere, and this little boy has nothing. Somehow, that seems so wrong to me. Reminds me of Kristel Candelario - who left her 16 month old daughter all alone to starve to death so she could go on vacation in Puerto Rico and party and pretend she never even existed, didn’t even call her own loving parents to come and look after her. Those same parents said they would’ve done anything for their little girl and were pleading for leniency on her behalf in court, which was noted by the judge.

This is a very sad and tragic story. How could a mother hurt their child. I today could ask that question. I raised my son from the age of 7. Me and his mother were married. I paid all bills due to home. She worked as a beautician. The money she made was hers. One day a neighbor stopped and told me he would just be outside the house after school. She didn't always was there to get him. It was discovered she was doing drugs( crack). She decided she wanted to live her life without us and she did. Anyhow it was a struggle with sacrifice. I sent him to a private highschool. He's now a train engineer. Married,a 4 bedroom home and 4 children. She should up for his highschool graduation ( no one knew who she was). May the little angel William rip. Thanks Scott

NY has a 'safe haven' law, where you can drop off a child up to age of 2 at any hospital, police station, or fire house and ask for help, leaving them no questions asked. This way another child will not suffer Williams fate

I followed William's case for years and when truth came out that his own mother had been the one who took his life I was heart broken. As a parent I'd do anything for my children and love them unconditionally no matter what. His mother's should have gotten life in prison. I can't imagine how someone could harm their own child. This is heartbreaking. Sounds like the judge wanted to give her life with no parole but couldn't because of the law and what she was found guilty of. I only hope that when the other inmates hear what she's in for they give her the justice that she deserves and that William deserves. A wholly despicable woman. RIP sweet William. There are people out there that would give up their life just to be a parent than we have monsters like Williams mother whom doesn’t even deserve to be called a mother like I said she’s not a mother she’s an evil monster! Here in Ga you can take a baby to any hospital, fire station or police station and surrender anonymously. An older child I do not know how that works.
