Our ginger kitty Kaos spent his formative months with a dog and picked up all sorts of weird habits as a result. He gives low, menacing growls when people knock on the front door, and would actively seek out the opportunity to stare you right in the eye and hold the gaze long enough to win the contest (he gets smacked in the face by our other cats whenever he pulls this one on them, as it’s considered a very rude provocation in feline etiquette, but he never seems to learn this and just keeps doing it). But his most bizarre habit is how he tries to drink like dogs do but can’t quite get it right, so he ends up licking the insides of water bowls and sending lots of water out in a puddle…

My cat used to be my parents' cat, out in the country. He was not only a brilliant predator, but he was a skilled trader. Whenever he caught a small critter (or a not-so-small one, such as a red squirrel), he'd present it to the humans, then jump onto the washing machine, and wait to be paid off in treats. Now that he lives in the city with me, he's an indoor cat, but is still very treat-motivated. When I take him to the vet, the vet thinks I've trained him to do tricks. In fact, he's trained me to offer him treats in exchange for doing things.

I have'ta dispute this "cats can't taste sweet things" conclusion. I've got a cat named Jasper with an unusual penchant for freshly made jam doughnuts. At the tiniest whiff of hot doughnutty goodness, the little shit turns into a black streak, dashing across a room, jumping up on furniture & clambering up on my chest - all to get just close enough to reach out & claw a piece of sugar dusted & deep-fried sweet bread (without the jam) outta my hand. He munches down on it with all the bliss of a soldier eating a Burger after a 6 month deployment. Seriously, he's a small-ish feline (6kg), but he gobbles down a good quarter of a doughnut in a few seconds.

I am pretty sure that when I read about people who have vegan cats, they give them special supplement enzymes in their diet so that they actually can digest the food they are given. And given the fact that cats don’t seem to have decent taste buds, I’m guessing they don’t really care, so long as they are healthy.

@@FHBStudio I haven’t seen that movie in decades (I never watched it again after the first time I watched it, which was when it initially came out). New fact i've learned: Regular Cats has more nipples than big cats
@TheReaverOfDarkness
@TheReaverOfDarkness 4 жыл бұрын
The number of nipples tends to correlate with the number of young nursing at one time. Mammals with larger litters tend to have more nipples. Small animals make tons of tiny babies because their life expectancy is too poor to waste a lot of energy on a few large babies. But big animals are much safer, so we make only a few or one baby at a time, and put way more energy into raising the small litter. Thus, larger mammals tend to have fewer nipples in general.
@JasonArmond
@JasonArmond 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheReaverOfDarkness Yep, that's generally called the "One-Half Rule", or the general principle that mammalian litter size rarely exceeds half the number of mammary glands in the mother. It's a rough rule though, there are plenty of exceptions. Take the domestic cow, for example. Average litter size is one, but it has four mammary glands. Maybe that's because they used to have an average litter of two at some point in their evolutionary past, or our rule just isn't perfect. But it's usually close.

I had a cat who belied that "unable to taste sweet" claim. You took your life in your hands eating pastry, cake, or cookies around her without sharing. She'd come running (smell I guess?) and literally claw it out of your hand if you did not give her some voluntarily (yes she would draw blood). Even a tiny piece broken off and shared with her was enough for her to let you eat the rest unmolested, but if you forgot to give her some? OMG.

@@truesoundwave Oh, yeah, I completely agree on those points, but I just thought it was humorous to mention it alongside the talk about his essay about Ibid, as a sort of contrast to his perspective. On the other hand, ignoring Lovecraft's horror works, I think we should probably apply the same lens of mental illness to everything he wrote. As you say, I can't apply my morality to Lovecraft's poems ejaculating about his racism, so by the same hand I shouldn't trust the essays written by that same man, no?

See, if school teachers taught like this, school dropout rates would plummet.

Nah. Many autodidacts just aren't capable of learning in a school environment. If they can't learn in school and can learn more and/or better if not in school, they won't see the point in staying in.

@@englishatheart not saying that there not are many who cannot learn in a school setting; I'm saying that many who abandon school would not do so, if school were different.
