Our ginger kitty Kaos spent his formative months with a dog and picked up all sorts of weird habits as a result. He gives low, menacing growls when people knock on the front door, and would actively seek out the opportunity to stare you right in the eye and hold the gaze long enough to win the contest (he gets smacked in the face by our other cats whenever he pulls this one on them, as it’s considered a very rude provocation in feline etiquette, but he never seems to learn this and just keeps doing it). But his most bizarre habit is how he tries to drink like dogs do but can’t quite get it right, so he ends up licking the insides of water bowls and sending lots of water out in a puddle…

My cat used to be my parents' cat, out in the country. He was not only a brilliant predator, but he was a skilled trader. Whenever he caught a small critter (or a not-so-small one, such as a red squirrel), he'd present it to the humans, then jump onto the washing machine, and wait to be paid off in treats. Now that he lives in the city with me, he's an indoor cat, but is still very treat-motivated. When I take him to the vet, the vet thinks I've trained him to do tricks. In fact, he's trained me to offer him treats in exchange for doing things.

At the tiniest whiff of hot doughnutty goodness, the little shit turns into a black streak, dashing across a room, jumping up on furniture & clambering up on my chest - all to get just close enough to reach out & claw a piece of sugar dusted & deep-fried sweet bread (without the jam) outta my hand. He munches down on it with all the bliss of a soldier eating a Burger after a 6 month deployment. New fact i've learned: Regular Cats has more nipples than big cats
@TheReaverOfDarkness4 жыл бұрын
The number of nipples tends to correlate with the number of young nursing at one time. Mammals with larger litters tend to have more nipples. Small animals make tons of tiny babies because their life expectancy is too poor to waste a lot of energy on a few large babies. But big animals are much safer, so we make only a few or one baby at a time, and put way more energy into raising the small litter. Thus, larger mammals tend to have fewer nipples in general.
@JasonArmond4 жыл бұрын
@@TheReaverOfDarkness Yep, that's generally called the "One-Half Rule", or the general principle that mammalian litter size rarely exceeds half the number of mammary glands in the mother. It's a rough rule though, there are plenty of exceptions. Take the domestic cow, for example. Average litter size is one, but it has four mammary glands. Maybe that's because they used to have an average litter of two at some point in their evolutionary past, or our rule just isn't perfect. But it's usually close.
