Years back used to work as a farm hand. After a week long series of rain storms a section of the farm's front area flooded a bit, had a couple inches of standing water beside the road, it was usually where we parked our cars, didn't pay much attention to it. Another week passes and the water is still there, but now it has the single largest collection of mosquito larva I had ever seen in it. Thousands of them, the water was *black* and constantly in motion from them, it was a terrifying amount and I was a little taken aback that the boss hasn't had us do anything about them. So I go and ask him if he knows what they are. He says, "they're some kind of bug, its no big deal." "Those are mosquito larva." "... It's going to kill the hell out of that patch of dirt, but I want you to dump half a gallon of bleach into that water." " *YOU GOT IT, BOSS.* " I then had to dig a new drainage ditch. The moral of the story is always pay attention to areas of stagnant water in or around your property so you don't have go Scorched Earth on these bastards.

Friendly tip: One teaspoon of water can breed 100 mosquitos. So check your yard and anything that holds water ESPECIALLY old tires. You need to empty them out because if you have a mosquito problem. Chances are they are breeding in some old bucket or tire and alot of species stay close to home. IE your yard. Also. Minnows are your best friends against mosquitos. If you can capture a bunch of minnows then you can release them into ponds and other things that hold water all year around. Minnows eat mosquito larva. Remember that.

@False_Death6 ай бұрын
@@pdxamish They can be. But we have trouble keeping them around in bigger ponds and bodies of water where bigger fish live. They get eaten fast. But we mostly use them for ditches and abandoned swimming pools where countless mosquitos will multiple. Imo. Id rather have Gambusias in the water than another outbreak of Yellow Fever or dengue. Cause once that snowball starts it's extremely hard to contain. Back in the 1870s hundreds of people died from Yellow Fever spread by mosquitoes. Orange county Florida used to be called "Mosquito County" and was considered uninhabitable until Mosquito control was developed. But all it takes is one person with Malaria or YF, dengue or West Nile virus. To get bit by mosquitoes and then all those mosquitoes become a carrier and it spreads like wildfire. Some mosquitos don't become carriers but a lot of them do. If mosquito control didn't exist or people like me just didn't do their jobs the areas we call home would become a nightmare in a lot of places. It seriously is just an endless battle with mosquitos especially in swamp like areas people live in. We push them back thin their numbers. Water dries up then comes back and they multiply again. Then we show up and repeat the process. Crazy how crucial that job is. But I enjoy it and feel good about helping my community behind the scenes. Biggest thing to remember: No Standing water: No mosquitos.
@pendlera29593 жыл бұрын
Friendly reminder that although only a few species of mosquitoes bite humans, the chemicals used to kill them don't distinguish between species, and in some cases harm other insects like butterflies and bees. That's why the mosquito genetic engineering projects are such a big deal and we can't just rely on sprays.

My 96 yr old gm used OFF repellent from head to toe & I mean she was so liberal with it that it would be dripping off off of her. She'd buy 2-4 cans a month. For 70 some yrs she sprayed her hair, entire body, all clothing even her shoes. Actually still uses it when she goes out doors. Every time she mowed , worked out doors farming or just going to the lake she'd literally used it as bug repellent & suntan oil. She had a dark golden brown tan that all us pasty teens were envious of & even dropping in OFF she'd still got a few bites. I did the same for almost 20 yrs until they fessed up & verbally told us how toxic it was. We were to naive to think it might poison us too . Anyway to each his own, those little suckers can kill with malaria could even be passing AIDS or Hep C around. The repellent doesn't sound so bad when compared to getting a death bite.

Jerry's question at the end leads to an interesting bit of mosquito trivia. The genus of mosquitoes that spreads malaria is called Anopheles, and the name comes from the prefix "an-" meaning "no" or "not" (like in "anarchy") and the noun "ophelos," meaning "benefit," "good" (in the noun sense, like "the public good"), or "profit" (in the financial sense). So, in a way, NGOs fighting malaria are all nonprofits engaged in a battle against a mosquito that is literally named "nonprofit"!

I particularly appreciate the effort you've taken to add references and acknowledge original creators/researchers. Too much digital theft goes unpunished. One inconsequential correction I'd like to make that would've made the information 100% accurate: 5:03 this insect is a male midge from the Chironomidae and is understandably mistaken for a mosquito. It's used again later in the video. If there are any questions people would like to ask, I'd be happy to answer them. BTW, Sabethes spp. and Toxorhynchites spp. are my favourites.

In life when people have fears of insects and ask for them to be wholly eliminated (e.g. someone hates spiders says “can’t we get rid of them all, do we need spiders” - the fast answer is yes. They are necessary, and if they were eliminated, there would be repercussions) - I always told myself mosquitoes are the exception to this rule. They do NOTHING beneficial and they can be wholly eliminated as other things that use them as a food source have alternative food sources. Can you confirm if this is an somewhat accurate thought or are mosquitoes integral to the earth’s functions? I’m very curious to know, thanks in advance to anyone who answers!

@Marispider3 жыл бұрын
@@NoShitEhh i mean, looking at it that way, wolves do nothing beneficial. all they do is kill things, what good is that? /s in the larger scheme of things, mosquitos and other biting flies take up a niche of being a nuisance (and sometimes legitimate danger) to larger animals so that plants and smaller animals can thrive (for example, driving a herd away before they overgraze a pasture, or culling the number of predators so they don't overhunt their prey). not only that, but they can bring nutrients back down the food chain quickly by only barely harming the host (long as there aren't any pathogens), which is not super common in the world - usually apex creatures have to die and decompose for that to happen. just because they don't bring anything beneficial to us doesn't mean they don't bring anything beneficial to the world. plus, yeah, there are tons of species that rely at least mainly on mosquitos and would be crushed by their elimination. parasites are just as important to life as death is, and they're just as important to nature as taxes are to a city.
