I remember seeing the promo of the movie - and this young girl was talking like a machine gun. It was so intriguing that it drew me into a movie I wasn't going to see because of my fond affection for the original - and was sure it wouldn't measure up. How she didn't win an Oscar is a crime.
@bOmBAsTiK Жыл бұрын
Never liked the original myself, but THIS film is incredible. And I agree, she should've won an Oscar, at the very least something like Tatum O'Neal won like Best Newcomer.

This was Hailee Steinfeld's movie, and the rest had to keep up. It's also excellent the Coen brothers went with that flow in making a movie that stands on its own, regardless of the comparisons to the 1969 effort.

I have bought exactly two dvd's in ten years -- "3:10 to Yuma" and "True Grit" ... both of which have knocked me for a huge loop, gotten my OCD into full speed, gotten me obsessed, totally obsessed with some of the colossally great dialogue... for examplwe.. "I'm just a foolish old man drawn into a wild goose chase by a harpy in trousers and a nincompoop." Hahahahahahaha...Matt Damon's hilarious self-serious reaction shots. Well dammit it is Damon's best acting I have ever seen, Bridges' best acting I have ever seen, and as to this absolute bolt from the blue in the person of this phenominally talented young lady, Hailee Steinfeld, well all I can say is "Gadzooks! She brought the wood and knocked it outta the park!"

the language makes this movie. It's hard to put a point on it, but the lack of contractions just catches you. Like American West Shakespeare
@icarus36045 жыл бұрын
Karl Seiwert The language sounds like it’s a mixture of early American and English from the Georgian era. Half a million English settled in America between 1820 and 1870,

Everyone assumed that it was Rooster who had "True Grit" in this, but it was actually a 13 year old girl who backed them all down and did it in her first film. Just astonishing.

Interesting Jeff Bridges was told were not really referencing the original True Grit movie at all, were referencing the novel. Yet in one scene that I know of they use almost the exact script. The shootout between Cogburn and Ned Pepper and his gang on horseback on that open prairie. Go watch the original scene, its on here. True Grit Shootout. Not to take anything away. Probably one of the best remakes ever and probably better than the original.
@danielmaine453 жыл бұрын
Agreed, but I truly think they made that scene better.

Common people were encouraged to mimic high culture. Look at the Burns documentary on the Civil War which reads actual letters written by the soldiers. Many of them represented educated common people. For many not familiar with 19th Century America they were dumbfounded by the eloquence and flowery expressions used by common people. Look at the movie Gettysburg when Gen Lee rebuked Gen Stuart for not following orders. Many people were taken back that Gen Lee did not swear or go into a tantrum. He even fought to restrain raising his voice at Gen Stuart. In the past educated people were taught to control their emotions and use proper language even when they are justify to be very angry. This was expected from college educated people which many common people try to mimic and aspire to. You can be socially ostracized if you lose control of your temper in public and go on rant screaming and swearing at someone or something. Using the word damn was crossing the line but under certain circumstances understandable but b#tch, bast#rd, c#nt, f#ck, and other colorful four letter words were definitely off limits. You never get angry and use harsh language in front of women and kids. Part of this is due to large population of Americans who practice Christianity. The Bible teaches what comes out of our mouth reflects the state of our soul. If your inner spirit is angry and bitter it usually will manifest in your temper and language. Placating the spiritual needs and faith of people and proper education probably mitigated the need to swear and encouraged self control of ones emotions.

Hailee is too pretty for this part as an young adult but at 13 she was awkward enough to not be too attractive where these characters wouldn’t see her as a bothersome child. Whoever cast her was spot on about her age and charisma for the part. When Matt’s (I can’t spell LaBeef) character meets her and said he almost thought about stealing a kiss. It was believable when he found her unattractive. The whole cast was perfect but she was the real centerpiece.
