I used to live in Colorado, I would visit some of the areas where the movie was filmed. This music makes me think of those places.

Another amazing maestro. He could write for any genre of film. Just like Mancini, Goldsmith, Williams and so many of that time, they learned their craft, and knew how to do it well. Elmer and Jerry are sorely missed in today's soundscapes. R.I.P., you were loved by many.

There was more to this story than just a western and that was why it was great and better than the remake. It was about human relationships, grief, it's about the journey getting there, helping each other along the way. The film has all the right human elements sadly lacking in today's films. And that is why it stands up today.

You can't really say that the remake is *just* a western either as it shares almost all of the same themes as the older film, as well as the original novel. I do agree with you that films are lacking a lot of those elements but I wouldn't say it is true of every film, with the new 'True Grit' being one of them. The original 'True Grit' is one of my favourite films and I was worried about the remake but was actually surprised that I liked it quite a lot.

@@JohnSmith-be1vl Well said. The remake is not a good example of bad remakes. Both films are well above average and worth seeing.

I've only seen the remake once. I think it's time to see it again and judge it on it's own merits rather than comparing to the original. I think the appeal of the original for me is largely nostalgic, like a cult classic. It had some obvious lows such as Glenn Campbell's acting(I was a HUGE fan of Glenn the musician!)

Thanks for putting this up. Bernsteins abilities had a way of bringing big band heroism, hope, and closure to films that without the score would be fairly grim and nihilistic.

Bravo, Fred! You've captured all the jaunty, rambunctious, adventurous and sentimental core at the heart of Elmer Bernstein's score, music that defines the screen persona of The Duke! Nobody wrote music for John Wayne better than Bernstein. Your work in creating this suite for "True Grit" deserves applause. Make that a Standing O!

There is another video on KZbin that reveals the many conflicts and dissatisfactions that emerged during the making of this film: comments are disabled there. These revelations were a great surprise to me, because this film is one of the greatest and most emotionally touching westerns ever made. The movie is perfect, like a finally polished gem. This truth extends to many aspects of the film, and particularly to the casting, which apparently was fraught with tumult. In the final end it could not have been better. The actors' characterizations break down the hard shell expectantly required to withstand portrayals of the brutality of life on the Western Frontier and sneak up on the viewer to pierce the heart profoundly. "Not a dry eye", as they say. This is possible, in part, because the production values and attention to detail permit near absolute suspension of disbelief. No, the movie is not perfectly true to the book. No, the movie is not perfectly true to all the historical details of the era. However, and especially considering when it was made, and what had come before, it stands out as ahead of its time: a monumental blending of emotional content and realism.
