I’d like to see an episode on Guard regiments, all the fascinating logistics and diversity of units that goes into the first and often only line of defense for the Imperium of Mankind. Edit: True the planetary defense forces and local navies of planets are the first line of defense against the threats, I feel safest on Mcrrage protected by its planetary military. Outside of the Terran PDF and guard regiments they’re the best equipped , trained and managed, especially with the return of Gullimen. Except Mccrage is a better place to live since it’s the home of the son of your god whose principle trait is order and logistics. (Do Ultima citizens even see the Emperor as a god?)

The thing is, you can do this with (codex compliant) space marine chapters cause they are for the most part exactly put down in numbers and organisation within the lore. Which btw is in it self already a huge problem for the lore if you ask me since you rarely ever see more than one company (100) marines deploy to any high intensity battle zone. Meaning often times a whole planet is held by 100 men. That is just impossible. Simply because one battle brother cannot cover enough ground even if he would be able to take on no matter how many enemies alone. Even holding a single city would be a huge challange. They shouldn‘t have put them this low or even better never really given 1 definitiv number that is accurate for most chapters. Would have safed the lore from that problem. But the guard regiments of the astra militarum can deploy in man numbers bordering or even surpassing the millions at once. I am not aware of any in depth organizational diagrams or listings of each of the forces or any at all. I mean in these numbers it‘s best for an author that isn‘t a military historian in additon to sci-fi author and lore nerd of his setting to just not give a detailed rundown if you want to avoid problems that people will point out. I would also assume that mosh regiments organize their forces as the battlefield they fight on dictates. The astartes are very bound to their traditions and rituals. So they won‘t (the raptors aside) ever change into some fitting camo for a battle eg, they want to be seen. Showing the foea of man kind whom has arrived to fight in the emperor‘s name. The militarum is much more logical and pragmatic (to the point of cynical decisions) than they are. So they would always adjust as far as they can to the battke they face. Thanks for listening, this is the end of my TED-Talk 😂

At least you left out the Primarus Marines. A Space Marine from Neophyte to Chapter Master doesn't go through each company. Sure one will start at the 10th company as a scout, then will be assigned one of the reserves based upon his specialty (8th for Assault, 9th for Heavy weapons, 6th or 7th is most of them will be). When a Tactical Company suffers losses they will be brought up into a squad to replace losses. From there they could be elevated to the 1st Company or Promoted to Sergeant and given a position leading a reserve squad until a vacancy opens up in one of the battle companies, or become one of the 10 Tutors (Sergeants) of 10th Company. After some time leading a squad in the battle company the Sergeant will be elevated into the 1st Company as a Vanguard or Sternguard veteran, then one of the 1st Company Sergeants. After some time if not assigned to one of the other Chapter officers he will become a Captain of a Reserve Company, then promoted to Leading one of the Battle Companies. Before 1st Company Captain which is typically 2nd to the Chapter Master the highest rank.

Series span 6(now 7) books, from defense of ultramar vs tyranids, his censure and perilous undertaking to destroy one very nasty chaos project, then his escape and reinstatement to captaincy, book 7 even got him audience with primarch Guilliman and undergoing rubicon primaris. Im not going to "um actually" because im sure with how well you broke it up and got a bunch right with the lore I'm just going to guess it got put into the wrong spot. But you call terminator armor "dreadnaught" armor when detailing the vet squads. And you characterize dreadnaughts in the "vehicle" section. Dreadnaught are marines that have fallen in battle and are kept in the dreadnought armor that contains their life support systems. You cant pull someone out of the suit as they will die and are the most venerated men, as they most likely are some of the oldest Marines, and its a great honor to be in a suit. The way you go over it im sure is just a "dreadnaughts are separate "and got lost, just wanted to say in case anyone was curious ☺️

It's worth pointing out that the Ultramarines are somewhat 'special' in that they also actually receive replacement marines from other chapters directly so they're not as straightforward in terms of progression as it might seem, that's partly because they are also somewhat of a 'prestige' chapter being a first founding successor chapter and as such the expectation on all of it's members is higher than that of other chapters

This was very well made, and provided a lot of good explanations on how a Space Marine chapter works. However, with all the traditionally old models showcased here slowly being phased out, the intent is clearly to have the old Marines replaced by the new 'Primaris' Marines, who no longer have any special distinct 'Primaris' treatment. It would be interesting to see a second version of this series where you review how the new Primaris squad units work in a chapter, since their organization is still very new and not as well-known compared to the old.

They already released the mkVI and MKIII and the special characters units showcased in the horus heresy in Warhammer Community hints the design of the base units with mkIV and mkV armor (shown today as apothecary). My other opinion is that they will release each year a armor so my guess is that the MK7 ( the one traditionally old design) will be released in at least 5 years.

You know, I don't really know if the super-human crews of space marine armored vehicles are really worth it for the chapter in the end. A tank is a tank at the end of the day and could lightly be termed as a significant force multiplier but it doesn't really let the marines exploit the nature of their augmentations and previous training. Furthermore we know that the Imperium has access to augmentations for baseline humans so it really can't be that hard for a space marine chapter to take a group of serfs and augment them to the point they are capable of integrating with a vehicles sensors and weapons to the point there is no appreciable loss in performance. It just feels like it would have been a more efficient use of resources allowing for more battle-brothers in the squads rather than squirreling away your reserve in the chapter specialists.
@CornishMoose11 ай бұрын
It makes more sense when you consider that the vehicle crews don't count towards the 1000 limit. If you used regular/augmented humans as the crew, you'd be reducing the number of actual astartes your Chapter had since you can't just transfer the vehicle crews somewhere else. So they're really a way to increase the actual size of the chapter without increasing the technical size of it. And in an emergency, you can always pull them out of the vehicles and give them bolters 😉

The sacrifice of the First Company Terminators in the polar Relquary during the Battle of Maccrage in the Tyranid Ultramarine War, is still something I love alot. I haven‘t read the codex entries and novels in a long time but if I remember correctly it is narrated from the perspective of an astartes rushing to the reliquary after defeating the main force attacking the fortress monestary and being anchious since a huge detachment of tyranid bioforms was seen heading there mid battle and the Veteran Brother there haven‘t responded after the battle. He rushes through the halls of the reliquary, drenched in tyranid blood and scorch marks of heavy flamers. He finds hundred of dead tyranids but not even close to as many as went there. In the end he finds the main chamber, the sanctum reliquaris to the whole complex where the relict (i forgot which artifact it was feel free to remind me) of their primarch is cept in the middle of the room. There he finds them. All of the first company terminators (which I think at this point was the whole company that hadn‘t died at the main fortress monestary as sternguards and vanguard veterans) dead in circles around the relic with uncountable numbers of xenos corpses surrounding them. The shell casings are piled between their motionless bodies and the all seem to have gone down fighting till their last hearts had given in and then some. And not a scratch or splatter of vile inhuman blood has touched the relic. They gave their lives and did their duty against all odds. The last Terminator seems to have bled out shortly after he killed the last bioform in the room. Or he stood watch after the fight not leaving his vigil to patch himself up in case more bioforms were hiding, until even his astartes bidy couldn‘t handle the bloodloss and organ failure from all the wounds his pierced Terminator armor had sustained over the days of constant assault. Such stories are why I love 40K and the spacemarines, I love the Astra Militarum just as much if not more for their simple defiance and courage towards impossible odds because they are ready to die for the chance of doing something that helps what they believe to be the only right thing and for all humans in the galaxy. That is in a very different way to these bigger than life super human acts of glory and honor the Astartes stories provide a very strong motive as well. But stories like the Honored First and their final Vigil in the polar Reliquary are just some of my favorite ones in terms of narrative and legendary feats

to make matters even more awesome, if you consider the sus-an membrane some of those Marines might have actually survived in stasis.

@@achimdemus-holzhaeuser1233 But tbh I doubt that. the story states that all the 1st company terminators there died defending it. so I doubt they just made a mistake and didn't realize it. but tbh I like the Idea that they all 100% gave their lives willingly for what they believed in without any second of doubt or fear much more than some surviving. the truely marched for Maccrage and they really knew no fear.

Dude this was so freaking helpful with trying to understand how the chapters work! I was playing space marine 2 and got curious and there was so many pictures and reddit pages talking about it but couldn't find anything that was complete with all the information like this, so again thanks so much for doing this!!! Really awesome video, you rule dude!!

It would be awesome if in a year or so you could cover primaris chapter organisation. I imagine by then GW will have done away with all the first Born units although I don’t know about in the lore because I think the primaris and firstborn dichotomy is cool. They probably won’t get rid of the land raider but hopefully they remake upscaled primaris Rhinos and all the rhino chassis vehicles like predators and whirlwinds, as well as the Centurions.
@necrometicsonofthelion11 ай бұрын
Will never happen probably. Primaris Marines have no real organization in their chapters. Just count all of their unit names in comparison to firstborn. What does an Intercessor unit even do xD. Firstborn are clearly structured with tactical, assault and support squads and veterans. Primaris are just all over the place. Reavers are assault and tactical? Eliminators are support ? And so on. Tactical Marines actually are a smart name for a versatile and highly flexible unit with one or more heavy weapons and normal weapons. Primaris Marines all have the same composition and the same weapons. They aren't tactical or smart or versatile at all.
@Sonof_DRN200411 ай бұрын
@@necrometicsonofthelion this is true. I really hope they make a primaris tactical and devastor squad like they’ve done for the sternguard squad. Perhaps then there will be organisation. They could create a completely new system. Perhaps to justify all the different units they could say marines have to master each weapon before joining the 1st company. So a marine would first be a intercessor, then a assault inter, then an infernus etc.
@williamfawcett295511 ай бұрын
They have brought out new sterngaurd first born so they will defo keep tactical marines around but maybe only as veterans not sure
@necrometicsonofthelion11 ай бұрын
@@Sonof_DRN2004 would actually save 40k for me. I rly dislike primaris. The whole lore just goes against every core principal of the Adeptus Mechanicus and minitorum but they can always retcon or redo most of it. But I rly miss the whole military aspect of marine chapters. Tactical and assault squads tell you exactly what they are and what you do with them. Would love to see some adjustments with the primaris range so that can you but some heavy weapons or reaver weapons into Intercessor squads.
@Sonof_DRN200411 ай бұрын
@@necrometicsonofthelion I think they’re allowing you to add special weapons into the scout squad. Tbh it is getting boring having units with all the same weapons but I suppose it makes dice rolls faster. GW will for sure make primaris tactical and devastator squads. They’ll make them the same point price and slightly batter then the intercessors so everyone will get them.

While the Ultramar Auxilia is mostly used as PDF garrison on the 500 worlds, they could be so much more. There is no Codex limit on the size and armaments of an Space Marine's auxiliary force, similar to an Inquisitor's retinue. And there are Inquisitors who induct millions of Guardsmen into their retinue, or entire fleets. Or both. Same for the tech-marines. A normal Chapter has maybe 40 tech-marines, but they could have 1000 or more, since they are not considered Battle Brothers, nor are the Dreadnoughts, the Librarians and so on.

It's fascinating to watch your graphics team attempt to render 40k in your chapter's art style, while evidently not being very aware of the lore or design language, makes all the renders of models quite refreshing to see the blurring of different styles and armour marks in a way that GW art direction does not permit.

For those of you wondering, as it's not really something covered here, a Codex-compliant Chapter is expected to have a minimum of 10 Apothecaries, Chaplains, and Tech-Marines, all of which are expected to be divided among the 10 Companies as needed. However, this is not mandatory, and aside from the position of a Chapter Master, there are no explicit regulations for the size and organization of Chapter Command, so those Space Marines belonging to the Honor Guard, Apothecarion, Librarius, Reclusiam, and Armoury are technically exempt from the regulations of the Codex and do not count towards the maximum limit of 1,000 Space Marines per Chapter, although this loophole exists mainly for the convenience of the Companies so that their overall effectiveness and organizational structure is not undermined by a handful non-combat roles shoe-horned into the company, or having the Chapter Master's Honor Guard be formed at the expense of the Companies and vice versa. This also allows for Chapter Command to find and train additional staff and add redundancies and a surplus of dedicated specialists so that a Company or the Chapter is not as affected by the Technically this same exemption also applies to the Master of the Fleet and those Space Marines set aside for dedicated roles within the Chapter Fleet, as well as dedicated drivers and pilots for the Chapter's vehicles and aircraft, but in practice these roles are almost always assigned to those within the Companies rather than being a separate organization from them. Additionally while Company Captains and dedicated officer roles within the Companies would technically be considered part of Chapter Command and therefore given similar exemptions to the rest of Chapter Command, in practice this is rarely the case. On that note, Roboute Guilliman's reformation of the Chapter system also includes the division of each Company into 2 demi-companies, each lead by a Lieutenant who oversees their demi-company and reports to the Company Captain; again these are technically officer roles that could be exempt from the regulations of the Codex if they were considered part of Chapter Command, but in practice that is simply not the case. Ironically, this means that many Chapters that are usually labeled as not being Codex-compliant, such as the Black Templars or the Space Wolves, could technically be declared as Codex-compliant if they reorganized themselves along these guidelines and exploited the loopholes of the Codex Astartes.

You made it part of the video... Tacticus is a lot of fun, but having tried it three times from install, it is aggressively PTP. You need certain characters of certain factions to open new campaigns or risk getting stuck in grinding. The first ones to open the initial campaign are trivial, but after that even when you grind, scrape and wait for 10x reinforcement shards (the drop pod thing) and despite the guarantee of a new character if you wait to cash 10 shards at once, doesn't happen after the initial characters. Instead you get character tokens for the initial characters, which are used for upgrading a character... if you happen to have the other, increasingly rare item to go with it. So, without paying, I was stuck in the initial Imperium, Necron and Chaos campaigns, with 1 of 3 required characters for the next two campaigns after 2x and 3x (different games) 10 shard drops that netted zero of the required characters but enough to level up the initial characters. By this time, I have piles of character coins for multiple characters and levels, but not the now super rare extra item... Oh, that extra item is also required for higher levels of character powers. So, two requirements, level up upgrades or special power upgrade... OR drop enough $$ to buy another game for 10 low-mid upgrade items that you start needing multiple of to upgrade. As for the required characters that refuse to drop as promised (no, a stack of character coins for a character I have does not equal a guaranteed new character), $$ works too, at an even more expensive rate. The costs are insane for digital bits, like GW plastic and resin price insane. You know, prices so high it is cheaper to shell out for a higher end 3d printer and resin to print your own minis. TLDR Summary: It is a fun game despite being a heavily overpriced pay to play rip off fairly quickly, which ends the fun.

What I like the most is that these two videos give some much needed perspective of how much weight a phrase like "the entire Chapter was deployed" or "the entire chapter was lost" have. With a thousand Battle Brothers, many more Scouts, support Marines and leadership, and their mortal servants, a Space Marine Chapter brings to bear firepower rivalring a present-day First World power's entire military. If you read about a particular Imperial campaign that features the deployment of MULTIPLE Space Marine Chapters, that was a SHITSHOW.
