When growing up I remember my Dad having one of these tube style hammers. I am going to assume it was a True Temper as his tools were normally high quality tools. When I got out of high school and bought my first home, I went to Odd Lots and bought one that looked like his remembering it seemed liked a good hammer. But mine, being from Odd Lots and cheap, folded over while I was doing some renovation. I stopped at the local mom and pop hardware store and the guy recommended a fiberglass handled hammer. In my mind, fiberglass handles were kind of new, at least for the consumers. I still have that hammer, it's held up very well!

Yep if your going to nail all day you better have a piece of Hickory in your hand...now metal handles are good if your setting forms, doing demo or not using a hammer all day...when I was an apprentice carpenter in Portland Oregon back in 77 I broke my wood handle hammer so when I bought a new handle I saw a hatchet handle which I bought and put on my hammer...thinking the curve would save my knuckles ( doing form work ) which I liked from the start...the journey men on the job were breaking my balls until they started trying it...then 40 some years later I see them in the stores...🤔 retired now at 73 I still use a Hickory handle...🖖

When I was framing, I'd use my 32 oz Vaughn hammer. Doing form work I had a couple big 28 oz Estwing hammers. A milled face for driving double heads and a smooth face for formwork. 16 oz hammers were great for finishing work. Never used a Rocket hammer. Didn't take too many years and I went to operating cranes. Better money and conditions.

China makes good stuff if they have proper quality control. There for a while they got along with Tiawan and took instruction from them on how to do things right. Some of it sinks in, others not so much. I do have to admit there were some fly by night companies in the US that put out not so good of quality, thankfully they went out of business because no one wanted it. My dad had one of those hammers that's a Power Kraft which might have been from Stanley. It's from the 1950s and I used it for most of my life and my son keeps running off with it when he isn't using the framing hammer. To me they are well balanced and I have used one all day with no problems. I have some fiberglass handle ones but I had one chip and just not fond of it. Those old all steel framing hammers are great for demolition although I had a claw break which never happens to me. Like you I prabaly have a dozen or two of the wooden handled ones, because that is what I started with.

Your vintage hickory handled hammer is beautiful and the resto of the Tru Temper hammer is great. I dont doubt that China can make good quality stuff. Everything is built to a price. We have an independently owned power tool store in our town that also carries imported brands, and the higher end Chinese tools are nicely made, but are also more expensive. I would rather buy American, certainly including tools, because I want to support our industry. That's not always easy because so much of our manufacturing has gone overseas. I'm getting to the point where I dont want to buy anything Chinese because they are a hostile power to the US. IMO, they are at low intensity war with us now.

You've solved my mystery. About a year ago I found a True Temper Rocket hatchet. I was wondering who made it because it is a really excellent hatchet marked only TT and rocket. I gave it a quick sharpen with a file when I found it and have been using it to split firewood. I have never had to resharpen it because it really holds an edge. The steel is noticeably better than cheapo hatchets I own and you are right about the handle, it is hollow, but it is very durable. Even though this hatchet had been left outside for who knows how long, the rubber handle is in excellent condition. It's the kind of tool you love using and love finding even more.

I think that bit you had might be a spotting drill bit , but it reminds me of a Dormer step drill bit. That True Temper Rocket 🚀 🔨 hammer you restored turned out Fantastic 👍. That polished handle & hammer head with that ScoutCrafter red 🔴 trim gives it a N.O.S. Look. You knock that one out of the Park ,Fantastic 👍. A few years ago I needed to get a new Harness Stitcher. I looked at the Chinese made Cowboy machine at around $2,500 (Aussie dollars). I spoke to the dealer and told him I was wary because of the junk I had seen coming out of China. He laughed and told me he had been selling those machines into the leatherwork trade in Oz for around ten years and never had a major problem. He also said that a couple of people had bought them second hand from deceased estates and asked him to service them, and after years of commercial use they only needed minor adjustments. So I bought it and it is still going strong. So if you do your research you can get some properly made stuff on the slow boat from China.

My grudge against China isn't even only untrustworthy quality but mostly the fact that we are perfectly capable of making that stuff ourselves wich would keep more people in a job and could keep us proud of our own countries. Our governments should care more about affordable energy in that case, wich the Chinese government does to my understanding. I can keep going on about this. I really like that hammer! Fantastic work. Some Peek polish or brake fluid (if you're more patient) always seems to work for me on handles like that. Hope you'll have a great weekend too!

Unfortunately I think it's all part of a greater plan. Or just pure corruption. England doesn't even make its own production car anymore. Everything is imported. We invented industry . 5 miles up the road from me is a place called Ironbridge, it is the birth place of industry. Now England is the graveyard of industry. One way or another we have aloud our leaders to sell us out. Now they are trying to replace us with millions of illegal immigrants. Where will it end. Our grandfathers used to pass their tools down. Now Asian junk isn't getting passed down because it's broken long before then.

Great video, ScoutCrafter! 👍🏻 Really enjoyed the card shuffler restoration but never got around to commenting on your last video. I always love when you give a little history behind various tools/companies vs. just a restoration with no background info. Hi Scout, I’ve got a Rocket hatchet and hammer that I’ll bet very few, if any of the collectors in the US has. Back in the 50’s and 60’s a major manufacturer here in Australia called Cyclone would occasionally import or manufacture under license, tools from other countries. One of those was the hammer you just showed. The rubber handle is brown / dark tan with the name Rocket in the Rocket Ship emblem = TT = and blank. On the head it has the name Cyclone, underneath that, the name Rocket and under that the Pat number. I feel these tools would have been manufactured in the US but I’m curious as to who added the Cyclone stamp, True Temper or Cyclone once they arrived here. In one of my videos I did a restoration of a Brades No. 278 hatchet. Brades is an English company but again Cyclone licensed the design and sold them locally. Cyclone is still manufactured here in Australia but of course a lot of the products are coming from China. Speaking of which I believe the Chinese can manufacture to any quality you want but it’s the resellers that decide the quality. I read that when a company goes to China to get something manufactured the first question the manufacturer asks is: How much do you want to pay per item? Then they manufacture to that price. I’ve sent you an email of my hatchet, I hope you find it interesting. Cheers mate, Stuart 🇦🇺

It's a funny thing with Chinese products, as you say you never know what you're getting. We have become accustomed to challenging old brands as they have so often sold out and let their standards slip but in the past brands were crucial in marketing a quality product and you trusted them, china could do with some trusted brands ! I do like to use a wooden handled hammer either Hickory or Ash and to be honest have never had a problem with loose handles apart form inherited 100 y/o hammers. That said the first hammer I bought was the Stanley Steelmaster - similar to your true temper - not a great hammer but there it is and I'm still using it regularly today 30+ years later !

OK, now you need to put the black cards on one side and the red cards on the other and see how well they mix. :-)

Chinese items often come with instructions (if at all) in what I like to call "Chinglish". They obviously have someone in the factory office marketing department that hasn't exactly mastered the art of English yet, and you get some pretty funny interpretations of English words and phrases. Makes up for when the item breaks and at least get a laugh.
