I wrote I Must Tell Jesus in 1970. I had been kidnapped and taken to Vietnam. I saw all the worst violence along the Mekong Delta. I got home just in time for my father's college graduation. Then the next day my family moved from Illinois to Michigan. I was lapsing into my native tongue of Flemish which my mother understood but she ignored me when I spoke that language. Then in addition my parents were fighting day and night and sometimes it escalated into violence. I was afraid my parents were going to kill each other and I was uncertain what would happen to me in a strange state where I had no family. I didn't know what to do but to cry out to God. The next day after I wrote I Must Tell Jesus my parents took me to Kansas City and when they fought and injured each other I was placed in foster care with the Castanza family where the mother and youngest son spoke Flemish. They were willing to help me for the 10 weeks I was in their home. When I returned to Michigan the violence between my parents was less.
