Damn, that 2-step is hard to learn if you were taught to step out left foot with a jab so you can open up for the cross, then follow with the right foot to close back to a side stance.
@TrueBoxerStance4 жыл бұрын
It’s certainly difficult whenever you’re forced to deny your programming. Deploying this right hand is a “position before submission” maneuver. Not meant to be initiated when you and your opponent are standing neutral and neither has the advantage.

lol listening to everyone’s mind being blown through that perfect silence. Brilliant stuff. I really would love to know the defensive philosophy with this stance vs leg kicks though.
@codyjwoods3 жыл бұрын
@Bob Gorn that makes a lot of sense. My striking coach said something similar but I actually interpreted as a jam and not a fade. I can see the fade being more applicable. I love this stance cause you’ll definitely win the jab war with it. I’ve been practicing it for years since I first saw Marvin’s vids.
@codyjwoods3 жыл бұрын
@Bob Gorn oh yea and you’re spot on with that right round house. I prefer to throw snap kicks but from the karate stance it’s too telegraphed. This footwork opened up the snap kicks with better angles.

Not so many (10) years ago I would be sparring with the top JKD student and he was far to overwhelming for me to handle; it was disconcerting due to that I am usually considered to be to others. This disconcerting feeling has now been replaced with confidence once again as using (TTBS) 'The true boxer stance' methodology when light sparring. Very much appreciate your thoughts and advice, especially regaining my confidence (and then some) when sparring 🙌 Brilliant Marvin Cook, keep em coming 👍

I’d love to see some more sparring from Marvin as well as someone maybe a pro who uses this stance and fighting style well to get a better understanding of how it’s employed in action. Also it’s hard to see kinda how that right is thrown with out telegraphing the movement so much also would mean you have to throw a jab or some shot with the left to throw the right at all considering you have to position the right hand before you throw it and if you miss your out of position to just pull back you have to pull back and pivot out. Idk maybe I’m overthinking it maybe you could help me Marvin great vids either way glad to see you back I got my basic fundamentals off these vids a couple years ago just some things I wish I could have explained in person so I could understand a bit more
@leroy43204 жыл бұрын
I'm p sure u can hide the shift if u shift as u jab, so u disguise the footwork with the jab, cut an angle and land the right. I do that in kickboxing but that shortens the bath of my rear foot to the target so I can land easier. so u jab and shift at the same time, and then land the right afterwards.
@lockeddownboxing99044 жыл бұрын
I’ve seen it previously on one of your videos where you’d teach about changing your position by simply turning the hips. I wonder now because when I throw my right it’s usually from the very inside where I don’t need to lean at all. I also sometimes overextend from my back foot and keep most of my weight on that leg so when I’m throwing a jab my hip to head alignment maintains a straight position instead of leaning and I explosively push off my back leg and go back by helping myself with the jab. So essentially I’d throw a jab to feel my opponent and range, pushing off my rear foot and at the moment of throwing the jab I’m just letting my hand jab without any tension in the arm, fist at the moment of impact and instantly pull back into my shoulder so it adds more momentum to my rear leg pulling my body back as well. I wonder if it makes sense. I remember my first Muay Thai lessons where the coaches would teach us to pull the hand back instantly to your head/chin so your hands don’t stay in the mid air and you expose yourself for a longer time. So I thought what if I push off my rear foot, maintain straight body alignment and pull back with my hand and the rear foot where most of my weight sits on. I am 164cm of height so it really works for me. Before I cut the distance I actually check my opponent’s reaction this way. Of course I can pull myself into a counter but I also cover my entire side of the face with the second hand so I can still block and keep my right elbow low. From what you’re explaining here it would never make sense to do that but I’m actuallly more confused about saying look this way you overextend but I’ve found a way to prevent that and yet come closer with a jab or even a cross. I try to throw my jabs from the rear foot and make it a quick snapping jab then it’s very easy to bend under your opponents counter, once you’ve cut distance you just need to drag the rear foot to stay solid and just push off the rear foot again to counter the counter attack with a cross. Still to evade I’d rotate even more behind my opponents lead leg and throw a hook so I can create some distance back again and evade counterattack. I know it sounds ludicrous but it actually works for me if applied at the right moment so I wonder if I’m misunderstanding your video here or can this be acceptable in boxing? I don’t want to develop bad habits once I move on to professional. Sorry for the long message and some confusion I’m trying to be super clear. So the movement looks like a quick double jab where you’d see two short steps with your lead foot, what I’d actually do is the same but from the rear foot to make the first jab more powerful, get faster to my target because the explosiveness in my rear foot is better and it looks like a double jab but from the rear foot, so I’ve also observed that many people when they see you pushing off your rear foot in 99% od situation they would expect your next move to be everything but pushing off your rear foot again to come with something like and over cross to slide under that punch which is coming to stop your from getting inside and then they don’t see what’s going on, I rotate outside and throw something else so at the impact of my fist and opponents body I pull from my rear foot to create distance again, but this time I’ve earned myself a smaller distance than the one I had to cut at the beginning with the jab cross.

I just realized this is like Joe Louis's cross. If you don't know what it is I suggest you look at one of the analysis video. In a nutshell, this is the improved version of Joe Louis's cross since both utilize planting the foot into the ground to generate power. However Joe Louis plants his foot forward instead of to the side, this in a way that makes it work more like a advancing movement instead of circling which is what this video is talking about. Great technique as usual
