Personally I think they're still taking the mick, they've change the URL and some of the wording but there's still a lot there thats trying very hard to convince the customer that it's basically a load cell by another name "Measuring the brake pedal load instead of the pedal position" " It does this by emulating what a strain gauge load cell would achieve, you feel the load not the small pedal movements." "The end result is a robust and reliable pedal where the braking control is about pedal load rather than pedal travel. " "We consider TrueBrake an “Electromechanical Load Cell” or a “Potentiometer Based Load Cell” "Does TrueBrake measure load? Yes! The load compresses the internal heavy duty spring and that small movement is detected by the linear motion potentiometer." "Does a potentiometer and a spring measure load? When combined as a system, yes they do! It’s high school level physics"

In my opinion you have done them a great favour, better to change the marketing now than gain a reputation as misleading. They should wholeheartedly accept and own the decision to mislead and decide to market appropriately. I, like you would not buy on principle a product that was marketed as something that it isn't even if it was fantastic. I hope for their sake the product is good and they learn the lesson here. It's one thing for multinational hair conditioner manufacturers to make dodgy claims about what their products can do to breathe life into your dead hair, but don't try and pull the wool over the eyes of a bunch of sim racers! You have to have a master's in geek to even get started!

Karl, I hear what you're saying. Mine just arrived and I've given it a first try. Utterly amazing. It's night and day compared to the standard setup. Now I've never used a 'real' load-cell but, because I'm on a wheel stand setup, this is really all I can manage to afford! Hope you like yours...

Why does AXC-Sim consider TrueBrake an “Electromechanical Load Cell”? 1) A strain gauge load cell (as used in many sim racing pedals) measures load by electrically detecting the small deflection (typically up to 0.2mm) of a steel beam. The deflection is measured by a strain gauge to give its electrical output. 2) TrueBrake measures load by detecting the deflection of its heavy duty internal spring. The TrueBrake spring deflects by 4mm at a load of 40kg and that deflection is measured by a very accurate (and expensive!) linear potentiometer. In both cases the load is measured by the deflection of a spring. One spring deflects 0.2mm and the other deflects 4mm. The stock Logitech pedal uses a potentiometer to detect the position of the pedal, the large movement of which is resisted by the deflection of a weak spring and a hard rubber block. The result of this setup is pretty unsatisfactory hence the demand for ways to improve it. You can change the properties of this setup by putting various things in its way or swapping springs but ultimately the position of the pedal is what determines the braking level in your sim racing game. TrueBrake does NOT measure the pedal position. I repeat, TrueBrake does NOT measure the pedal position!! Most people get this, if you don't then go buy a spring or some bits of 3D printed nonsense. TrueBrake measures load applied to the pedal by detecting the deflection of its internal spring (approx. 10 Kg per mm). The pedal is not directly connected to the TrueBrake piston. There is a weak spring that pushes the pedal back to its top position and a poly buffer that smooths the transition to a load being applied to the piston. When braking with TrueBrake you don’t sense the small movement of the pedal, you sense the load you have to apply to achieve braking in your sim. If you use a strain gauge load cell it works exactly the same except the movement is smaller. Ironically this lack of movement doesn’t feel very realistic and springs and poly-buffers are put between the pedal and the load cell to increase the movement of the pedal. I've offered Karl a free TrueBrake unit to try out. You'll have to watch this space to hear his views on it. Cheers Rob Green Owner/Designer AXC-Sim (Aeroxcraft Ltd)

Different platforms and games will behave differently. For example Gran Turismo will only use the load to where it thinks the G29 rubber block is. F1 2019 has lots of options for calibration and can use the full 40kg if you want. On the PC and g920 you can calibrate full braking whatever load you want, up to the 40kg max.

The TrueBrake mod is a design improvement on the stock Logitech G29/920 brake, but using the same principles as Logitech. It will feel better than the original. But it is impossible to emulate the 0.2mm or less of flex you get in brake fluid by using coiled springs. A proper loadcell does and does it well. The way modern disc brakes work, the pads are virtually touching the discs. When you apply pressure on the brake pedal, the fluid in the brake pipes pushes the pads against the discs. There is very little travel, about the 0.2mm or less (that is what the TrueBrake mod designer refers to). The slight flex you feel is the fluid compressing. In race cars, there is almost zero flex... the pedal is rock solid. I have fitted a Ricmotech loadcell to my G29 brake pedal, which requires 70kg of pressure to max out the brakes. Once you hit that loadcell, it is like a brick, the only way you get more brake is by pressure, you feel no physical movement, just like in a race car. You use your muscle memory to modulate the brake, trail braking is a lot easier and easy to replicate every time. The loadcell has it's own electronics, not relying on the Logitech firmware. I am also connecting the whole pedal set directly to the PC via a Bodnar cable, increasing the resolution of the pedals to 10 bit. I have also replaced the gas and clutch potentiometers with Hall Effect Sensors, which are much more reliable and unlimited lifespan. The result is a set of pedals which perform as well as many of the higher end pedal sets.

I came across AXC-SIM from a mention on a discord server and then used Google. One of the first returns is the racedepartment forum reviews of truebrake. Rob had acknowledged it was difficult to get the concept across and answered a few questions in those posts. I didn't believe it was a true load cell after 5 minutes of research but I can understand why someone landing on the webpage might but it should have been easy for you yourself to find Rob's racedepartment posts. I bought the product after reading the racedepartment threads and feel in no way misled.

I just believe in things being honest and accurate from the start... if it's a load cell say it's a load cell, if it's in fact a potentiometer then don't say it's a load cell, the two are not interchangeable, comparable or even similar. A good product will sell itself there's no need to misrepresent it and this does look like a good product! :)
@keyserni

@@KarlGosling What constitutes a load cell in the first place is confusing and I can understand in turn the confusion around truebrake. A load cell system has to comprise both the sensor and the the solid object you are measuring the force through. Truebrake is not a load cell system, the combination of measuring the spring and using a solid billet of aluminium for the lower housing means the measurements taken can be highly accurate and a sensor to measure load not movement can be used. You get some of the benefits of a load cell with less of the hassle and hopefully cost.

Completely happy with how it played but this created a beast in me i now started watching other sim games and realized I wanted to a computer to get on the better sims. The g920 functions great, make sure to install all drivers correctly if you using pc. But in an honesty if you can get the extra cash together go with a fanatec direct drive. Or something a little higher end. You will want it if you really enjoy sim racing trust me. Good luck with your decision

You won't regret it. I got my first wheel (G29) a few weeks back (at the age of 36) after wanting one for about 5 years after having a go on my friends G27. Couldn't justify the price of £300-£400 that a complete setup would cost to meet my needs for years as I also needed a foldable rig as I have 2 kids and my PS4 is in the living room. Ended up getting a X rocker xr circuit chair (it's a near enough carbon copy of the playsest challenge for £114 instead of £200) to go with the G29 and I absolutely love it. It's made GT Sport so much more immersive and enjoyable. Like the comment above its made me now crave a proper gaming PC to try games such as rFactor2 and iRacing but again the cost of a decent PC is not justifiable when I only get to race for a few hours a day. Anyway good luck and enjoy.

Hi Karl. Firstly yes you are right about the potentiometer and that fact it isn’t a load cell. However I own this and not only is it very good to actually use it provides good break feel and has improved my times and consistency over the GTEYE spring that I used to also own and still do for the throttle and clutch. The GTYeye spring is nothing compare to this setup and for £50 it’s a steal. If it was a load cell, they’d charge way more, probably at least double. I actually gave my GTEYE spring away for free after installing this. Try it before you slate it

It’s a great well built upgrade for the money albeit a bit misleading in regards to advertising when analysed. Cheers

Whilst it can be confusing. I do think this works in the same way as the majority of load cell kits. I have always thought existing load cells were deceptive because they are just strain gauges attached to stiff spring/bumper combinations. In fact the thrustmaster load cell pedal kit is probably the only real load cell on the market in terms of what its actually measuring because it is installed at the base of the spring set and actually measure force/weight/load vertically applied. This load cell just measures the strain of the spring over a greater distance. The standard strain gauge based load cells, such as fanatecs, measure the flex of the pedal which is the spring in that system, the bumpers are just for preference and u can replace them with a solid block of titanium if u wish. The thrustmaster kit actually measures the force/weight like a bathroom scale although again, these are just strain gauges. I think the video is good because it highlights some wording and provides clarity on the product. And for AXM I think its probably some good press. i might actually get this upgrade before I go for a fanatec kit in future.

A few spring mods maybe in the clutch and throttle and I think that's about as fancy as you're gonna get with logitech pedals. Next stop, Fanatec. I know Thrustmaster offers a T-LCM pedal set now but they are unavailable everywhere I look. And to be honest I like the way my T300rs delivers but I've had pretty significant reliability issues that I've had to resolve myself which resulted in a lot of down time. And TM's pedal offerings are anemic at best. Not sure I would pony up to the T-LCM's at this point. YMMV

First, love your channel and demeanor, thank you for sharing your experience. I've learned by watching. Subscribed. I get where you're coming from with this video - and I think you mean no ill will. Here's the but: SEO is not necessarily advertising. Not everyone is savvy enough to investigate their url's, after all. While it does mention load cell on the page (agree, not the best marketing) I don't believe they're trying to mislead. They know people are searching for Load Cell, hence the SEO. The page does show a detailed diagram, with specific description of what the product is, what it does and how. While I agree that using a deritive term (mechanical load cell, or something?) is... weird - I don't think it's deliberately deceptive. I think they're trying to make a place for their product between the simpler spring upgrade and the actual load cell. Should they have invented a different term - probably! But again I don't feel them to be nefarious. That said - I'm not sure it's fair to call out a product in such a manner and then not actually test it out? I get it's more a PSA than anything, so that's cool I suppose. But the owner did reach out to you - I'd love to see your objective take on the product. And to be transparent - I ordered this a month ago. I was on the fence about what to do about my braking. I didn't want to go with csl elites yet due to finances, and at this point I've already tried two different spring upgrades, neither of which made an appreciable difference. I found this product and carefully read the description, and fully understood it wasn't a load cell like we see with the CSL pedals. But what I read made sense, and it seemed different enough from just a spring swap to make sense. Either way, I enjoyed your breakdown of the product and appreciate your video, even if I may not totally agree. Keep up the good work, I look forward to your review of this mod :)

Still getting used to my G29 brake pedal after getting my first wheel a few weeks ago. Is it normal for the brake pedal to creak occasionally under load? Gives the impression I'm pushing too hard on it and I'm breaking it. This is probably not the case at the moment and the spring & rubber combo are just going through a wearing in period, but I'm guessing you CAN put too much force through it and it will eventually break

I think you may need to try one. I fitted one, I then went 3 seconds faster within 3 laps and then got even quicker, as I got used to the completey different pedal. It is leaps and bounds better than stock or any other spring mod for these pedals. I won't lie, I thought I was buying a load cell type product to begin with from the way it was advertised as I didn't read it fully/look into it enough. However this pedal is rock solid and feels more like a real pedal. It moves a few mm with minimal pressure, then it goes solid and doesn't move. The harder you press/the more pressure you put on it, the more braking you get. Is it a real load cell, no. Does it work well, feel solid and require more pressure to brake hard. Yes.

Technically, it is an electromechanical load cell. It measures force by proxy of measuring position under elastic deformation of a spring, and potentiometers are/use transducers. A strain gauge load cell also measures position, just at a far smaller scale. An url can read anything, relevant or jibberish, so is excusable. This isn't false advertising, it's perfectly valid. I appreciate that to a layman it may be misinterpreted, but I think AXC have done their due diligence. Complaints aside, I look forward to your review. I personally use this in my G27 pedals and I wouldn't choose a "real" load cell like Ricmotech over this. My lap times improved, consistency is up, immersion boosted etc.
@alexw1681
@alexw1681 4 жыл бұрын
Strain gauge load cell also use springs, despite many of your arguments. Simply the spring is much stiffer and moves much less, being the metal body, but the concept is identical.

I appreciate your comments mate, thanks. For me it's very simple, it either uses a load cell or it doesn't... it may feel and perform similar to a load cell (we'll see soon) but it's a potentiometer based spring mod and that is what it is. I just feel it should be made clearer (which it now has) as people have been ordering this thinking they are buying what you find in the higher end pedals (Fantatec, HVE, etc) when they are not.

Hey guys. Agree. Dislike the dishonest approach they use. Have this setup on my old g25 pedals: Throttle and clutch use the Simulaje hall sensor kit instead of the potentiometers. It’s senses the position of the pedals via a magnetic position sensor. Works well for throttle and clutch. For the brake.. I use the Perfect Pedal. It’s a hydraulic cylinder that replaces the whole brake spring assembly. When you depress the pedal.. the hydraulic fluid in the cylinder moves down a tube to a pressure sensor mounted on a little circuit board. Also plugs straight into the Logitech wiring. Used it for a while in that configuration. Then.. got a Bodnar cable to connect the pedals independently of the wheel base. Been amazing!

I hadn't seen this mod before now but it looks very much like what I did with my g27 brake pedal and now with my g29 brake pedal which is I added a short 1-1/4 in. 45 lb compression spring placed inside a 700 x 23c rubber tube to a 3 in. 20 lb. compression spring giving it a total of 65 lbs compression at full braking . I tested the amount of weight needed to get full braking with a weight set placed on the pedal and it took 65 lbs of weight to get full braking to register onscreen brake meter in game via Gran turismo not Iracing or Assetto Corsa online pc game . Was I trying to make it a load cell brake ? no , iv'e never had or used a load cell or personally seen one other than online videos . My reason for it was for the use of muscle memory instead of the stock spring with the rubber block piece insert which I also tried with my spring setup but didn't like so i removed it for now , but i do have some shorter softer round rubber that compresses when squeezed with a good amount of force that i could replace the stock rubber that came with the pedal originally but i haven't tested that yet . The stock pedal brake spring may be fine for those who like to race in their socks , I don't i race in my shoes I also added a 25 lb compression spring to both my throttle and clutch pedals so i can better modulate the throttle pressure needed and for more clutch resistance than the stock spring that came in the pedals .

You can do a proper load cell conversion for less than the cost of one of those if you don't mind a bit of DIY, it's a bit more effort but can be done with a 3D printed piston base (get it printed online for ~£15-20) that holds a cheap ~£1-£2 load cell you can get on ebay github.com/GeekyDeaks/g29-load-cell The original Github includes a PCB design that inputs change from the load cell and outputs resistance to match the default potentiometer so it can be connected straight into the Logitech wiring meaning you retain Playstation support, but if you only want to use it on a PC you can do as I did and wire the entire pedal set to a LeoBodnar USB module that supports load cell input. That raises the cost by about £25 but makes the electronics side a lot more simple to do (see the comments/issues section, I posted my variation in there)

Im glad I did that instead of wasting more than $600 on another steering wheel just to drive a damn digital car and because of people always talking negative about the Logitech G29. I pre-ordered this mod at the beginning of last month from their website, says I have to wait until july I think, lol. Wish I got it sooner. In April I bought one of those GT style rim for the Logitech G29 and it has been much better than the original rim and more fun. Since the rim its lighter you can feel the FFB more (Im using 4/10 in GT SPORTS) than before. Next and last(?) mod will be the inverted pedal kit and SIM-LAB TR1 chassis. Enjoy it Karl.

Do people always talk negative about the G29? I've only really came across positive comments for it's price point. But yeah with a couple of mods it's a good entry level setup, even out the box to be honest once you put some time in and get use to it.

@@KarlGosling Yeah, when I first started watching reviews for it, many of the top comments I saw were saying that it is toy compared to the rest of the wheels and to get the Thrustmaster instead. However, I decided to check the reviews for that Thrustmaster wheel and many were reporting problems with that wheel. I saw the Logitech G29 on Amazon for around $240 dollars and took the risk. No regrets. I also see many pros from the sim racing community using it too.

Have been enjoying your videos but sorry mate, have to say that this one pissed me off. Not sure what you hoped you would achieve by doing this video. I guess in your mind you believe that you are helping people, but the thing is, what would have been helpful for everyone would have been a proper review. Let's see what they claim and how it holds up. The product has actually been released recently, and the page has been constantly updated. By design, it's mean to emulate a load cell, that is why you see the word "load" so many times in the description. As the product rolled out and he started receiving questions regarding how it works, is it a load cell, he started adding that info on the web page. The URL in case was created when he first launched it. Imagine if you would have bookmarked that URL and then he changes it to something else and then you get to an error page. If you don't like the fact that he describes it as an "electro-mechanical load cell", then your next video should be on memcanical keyboards. I bought the product months ago and have been very happy with it. The difference between this and the default brake is miles apart. You talk in your video how it is similar with Logitech's design, but I can assure you it feels nothing like it. The rubber block inside of it always felt odd to me, especially that you have a lot of travel and then hit something hard that didn't make any sense for my brain. When hitting against the rubber block, I could never be constant. I could never hit the same break level. The truebreak mod changes the break into something completely different, and the fact that it uses a different potentiometer makes a big difference. Because it has two springs, when you push on it at first, it feels easy and only the first spring compresses. Once you reach the transition buffer, applying more pressure will compress the second spring and start sending input to your game. The spring is linear and the most interesting part is that you don't get the stupid logitech curve at the end. I believe you also talked in a video about what happens in the original break when you remove the rubber block. With this mod, you can push the break with your foot and remember how hard you need to break based on the load/pressure you apply on the break, instead of remembering travel distance. You also talk about how a load cell registers the load you put on it and that it does not move. Load cell pedals use bumpers. Those bumpers still let the pedal move as you apply more pressure to the load cell. That is exactly what the second spring is doing for the truebrake mod. And the comparison of removing the springs to demonstrate that it will still be travel based to pushing on a load cell is weak at best. Even with a load cell, you couldn't just mount it to a metal plate and push your foot directly on it in order to break. You would get horrible results. The pedal designs are complex and require more though than just the sensor to create a certain experience. Like how would a load cell pedal feel if we would replace all the bumpers with metal cylinders? Would that make it a realistic experience even though it would still technically be a load cell? Do us all a favor and give us valuable information such as a real hand experience with a product, tell us about your impressions, let us know how it feels when compared to pedals that use a load cell. But don't just go bashing on a product because you read a couple of things and actually don't have any information about it. This is not good content. It's not hard to nitpick what is suitable for us to get a point across. But it also doesn't provide any value. Hope you take this as feedback and that it will help you create more quality content. In the meantime I will be a gatekeeper as well and call you out on your claims: "Exploring the TrueBrake Logitech G920 load cell brake pedal mod... and seeing what it really is!" You did no review, had no hands on approach, were unable to compare it to anything or benchmark it in any way, so you did not actually get to see what it is. All you did was draw conclusions based off of little information and rabmled on that it's marketed towards people looking for load cell upgrades and that you don't agree with how they market it. But you did nothing to touch on the actual product itself, except comparisons made on assumptions on your end.

Thanks for your comments mate. The whole point of the video is just to make sure people know what they are buying... a potentiometer based spring mod rather than a load cell conversion. If you scroll through the comments there are people here who have bought it thinking they were buying a load cell conversion, there's nothing worse than buying something only to find out it's not what you thought it was 😔 I can't comment or review how it feels or performs and I said this many times throughout the video, in fact I say that it looks very well designed, thought out and could well be the best mod available for Logitech pedals.... but that isn't even relevant, it doesn't matter how good it bad it is, that wasn't my point, my point was it needs to be sold and marketed clearly and honestly for what it is, not try to ride off the back of genuine load cell based pedals by implying that's what you're buying. I've spoken with AXC directly and they have now edited the URL and description to more accurately and honestly represent what it is which is great! Less people will buy it thinking its a load cell conversion and instead buy it for what it is! 🙂

@@KarlGosling had a nice personal email from the manufacturer which was appreciated...i also appreciate your candid opinion. I also watch the other review vid with the bouncy brake deck...what appealed was the travel distance or lack of travel distance in relation to stock pedal...i will comment on here when i have given it a go.cheers

I hear you trying to be a consumer advocate - but the way to do that responsibly is to FIRST contact the seller and get any clarification, and offer them the chance to correct any errors/mistakes. SECOND get hold of the part, perform a proper review in the interest of providing an informed opinion on the merit of the product. NEVER speculate about something without appropriate evidence.
@KarlGosling

I didn't speculate about the product at all (well actually I did, I speculated that it looked very well made and thought out)... I just walked us through the misleading website and description, the evidence is right there, it said it was a load cell at the beginning and then as you get further down the page it shows it isn't... this has now been edited to be more honest and accurate :)

and the first thing to do as an honest seller is not blatantly LIE about the product with misleading information,the onus is on them to get their own factual information correct not anyone else...one or 2 mistakes you can live with but to blatantly mention its a LC throughout the webpage it is intentionally misleading information..good to see they have changed the said information to be more factually correct now and looking forward to the reviews.

How can you talk about a product that you haven't even tried ? Probably you are doing the marketing campaign for GTeye. This brake mod is the most real thing to a load cell , so before you do a review make sure you try the product, I will send the review once I do it 😉
