Not enough is said about the conductor, Karl Eliasberg, probably one of the greatest of his time. You feel his presence and strength as he carefully guides Gilels through the performance.

The romantic young Mendelssohn really found himself in this work, indeed ! Great Gilels' perform !

An amazing feat of technical brilliance.

I like the rather slow feeling in this performance. Much more intense and fitting for Mendelssohn than the furious and fast ones of modern pianists.

I have exactly the same opinion. The moderation is necessary about all things. In his Violin Concerto in E minor, everyone is singing more slowly and romantically. Becacuse that is the characteristic of Mendelssohn's romantic sentiment and passion. Make it more relaxed and romantic!

I agree with DrDereczynski, this is a real treat. Bold, intimate, exciting... amazing!

great performance. Gilel looks for some kind of osmose with the orchestra. It's great

Sorry I never saw Emil Gilels live, although I could have.

A bit heavy handed and pedaled for my ultimate taste. Know that the petal was much developed by Chopin and others subsequent to the early 1830's when this was composed--Mendelssohn was notorious for little and judicious use of it. What the last post sees as "look ma,no weight' wrong, I see as right, and this over-spacious version somewhat heavy-handed; a tendency at their worst Gilels and Richter both shared. But their worst was still better than some's most-and this is a worthy performance.

WAY to heavy for this piece... eeesh.... it's like a 50 pound sack. Get your foot off the pedal and let this piece play itself!!
@punkpoetry8 жыл бұрын
+Dale Sexton standards of pedaling have changed somewhat since this recording was made in 1951. Also, you could try not sounding like a dumb oaf and showing some respect for a great master.

punkpoetry Bull.... it's way to heavy in this piece.... for any time period

+Dale Sexton dear American teenager: following the instructions of your piano teacher on this or that aspect of a piece is good and important; lecturing on what a world class pianist got wrong based on that is dumb and bad. How you should play this concerto is one thing; how a great master played it 65 years ago is another.

punkpoetry Your opinion. Mine is he muddied it up horribly. It just isn't any fun to listen to.

If Beethoven live to see the young Mendelssohn completed this piano concerto he probably had a heavy touch as well.
