For all of Robben's solo skills. His comping work and harmonic adventure is incredible. I remember him saying to me, "if you have good rhythm chops, and chord knowledge, it makes your own musicality better". Mind opening stuff. He said, "I just sat down and WORKED ON IT". Hard work. Lots of sheddin'. That's why he's such a humble cat and likes to teach. And always has LOTS to share. Peace...

Saw Robbin play at the San Francisco blues festival back when it was still happening. He walked through the crowd afterward just hanging out. And I got to meet him. We took a photo together and chatted for a while about guitar playing. He was so kind and gentle and patient. Great guy. Great player

Amazing to hear there was ever a time when Robben Ford was ever anything but omniscient. A nice chuckle heari g Robben talk about his first jamming with Larry Carlton, with Robben providing some rhythm accompaniment. He tells how, because he was a bit less skilled in rhythm accompaniment in accompanying Larry at that time, Larry, at a break in the jamming, looks at Robben and says, "So where is it?" Direct and humorous request for some substantially more effective contribution from Robben. A vicarious learning experience for us, no less.

Robben's Vamp video was the first I purchased at TrueFire. I wanted to expand my chord knowledge. It is absolutely amazing. In the first video [alone], there were more than 30 chord voicings of a 2- chord vamp. Just amazing. Some of the voicings I had to work out on paper, because I couldn't find the root in his fingering...yet they worked. Some I would have called something else, but because he removed the root, or the lower notes, or used only a portion of the chord, it really enabled the vamp to have a sense of movement. Best of all, with the SoundSlice software, if you got tire of playing rhythm, you could play lead with Robben accompanying you. With the software, you could see 8-16 bars ahead on the sheet music, so making the changes in your lead playing was very easy. A lot of fun. Cannot recommend it more highly.

northof50now You do know that chords that contain more than three notes are frequently played with out the root ,third or fifth. He clearly states why In this video It's muddy thing to play the low root when you have a bass player dude

Larry Carlton taught Robben Ford to strum, during a 2 guitar jam session one day; what a great story and lesson.

Question about naming the Cm11 & Ebm11; If the P4 interval in the chord is within the first octave from the Bass root, is it Cm7add4 / Ebm7add4 like it is at 1:50? Thought that the m11 chord has the P4 above the second octave from the root. Same chord, just a different voicing?
@northof50now6 жыл бұрын
Doug, see my post above. Robben uses a lot of partial chords, or leaves out the low root in many cases in this series. A couple of the chords I knew by a different name, but he used them as something else.

Surprised to see him playing a PRS instead of LP or Tele, any thing he plays sounds good.
