I’m not a submarine engineer, I’m an aeronautical engineer. There are similarities though. One of those is the materials that are used in both. Carbon fibre is an amazing material. Very stiff, very strong. But it is either structurally sound, or it’s in a million pieces. At that depth it would shatter like glass if it was overloaded. Moreover, bonding carbon fibre to a metal, eg titanium which the end caps were made of, is very, very difficult to do consistently and strongly. This sub, and the way it was constructed, was not certified. It’s scandalous and depressing, as a scientist and engineer, to think that this could have been allowed to happen.

Thanks for the engineering perspective, but dumbasses should be allowed to kill themselves by their dumbassedness. And in the big picture, who gives a f**k? Has the world war three become too boring? How about half the world's population choking on smoke because the forests are being deliberately burned, is it not newsworthy?

@scum4984 I’m no fan of big government. But for me, the real danger is the obsession we seem to have with these entrepreneur CEOs, particularly in complex technical industries. This particular character seems to have deliberately hired young inexperienced staff, no doubt so that he could assert his will over them to produce this piece of engineering bullshit that has cost five people their lives, including him. Geordie is right, you need a boring person who spent too much time studying designing these things, not the likes of Elon musk, Alan sugar, or this tragic idiot.

One of the former employees from Ocean Gate wanted to destructively test the submersible, and the CEO just ignored him. He eventually got fired. Another former employee, got sued by OceanGate for revealing “confidential information” to OSHA. The pure amount of *shifty* that is baked into this, is ridiculous.

My 80 year old grandad is an ex submariner, he said its criminal that there was no emergency exit or anything in place for an emergency. He wasn't surprised that its an American company where most of Americans he had met didn't believe fires could happen underwater... Anyhow it's a sad world we live in and hope people take these disasters as an eye opener to stop messing with things that should be left alone.

You hit on something really interesting Georgie, Oceangate stated there were incidents were the Titan got lost but it was only for 5 hours. So, it was commonplace for this tin minivan to get lost. That's why they didn't react until 8 hours after comms were lost. It's sad on a certain level but you can tell Stockton was not concerned with overall safety as his goal was to beat other billionaires to punch. He wanted the glory of being one of the first billionaires to tour the Titanic. Ironically, they probably didn't get that deep according to reports.

Great coverage as always 👊🏿. I think the reason why people were more united on this one is coz the circumstance was basically optional. It would have been different had it been a regular submarine or regular ship or plane etc this was basically negligence of the highest order from a billionaire tryna cut corners. So it's simultaneously still a devastating story but easier to look at the lighter side of it due to the sheer amount of unnecessary risk that was taken. Coz it wasn't some dude who couldn't afford it, dude was cutting corners for the sake of it.
