I think shades of black/grey could work for Mummeon's eyes, if wanted (instead of having any white in them at all) and I agree that maybe the Unown's white should have been the same purple as the tail but I really, really, really like Mummeon. It's more cat-like in stance and face shape (? I can't explain what I mean), which works really well for the (specifically) Egyptian mummy aesthetic. Hey! As someone who also has Arcanine fanart as their pfp, I wanted to ask you, how do you deal with people calling you a furry (if that even happens to you)? I don't have anything against furries personally so sorry if you are one. It's just nobody likes being bullied ESPECIALLY when it's because of something that doesn't even apply to/isn't true for you (such as being a furry). Ever since I switched to this pfp, I've been called a furry and have had my arguments invalidated because of it (for example people would say something like "why should I listen to someone who dresses up as an animal in their free time?"). I should note that nothing on any of my social media profiles indicate anything that implies that I am/could be a furry so if they don't specify that I "have a furry pfp" it's very likely that they are indeed basing their accusations off of my pfp. I always try to explain to people that there's nothing about my pfp that is relevant to furries. It's literally fanart of a Pokemon (I tell them the name so that they can look it up). The full image of the fanart isn't even anthropomorphic either. It's literally just the Pokemon as it normally is on four legs. It is kind of rearing up with it's front paws off the ground, but you could still tell it's a quadruped creature. Either way nobody can tell that from the cropped pfp I use. Arcanine has always been one of my favorite Pokemon and I had planned to get a tattoo of it someday, but now that people are calling me a furry for having it as my pfp, I'm having second thoughts on getting a tattoo. What should I do? :(

an important thing to consider with regards to art style, and getting fixated on sugimori-style artwork: most of the pokemon cards are not in the sugimori style. I think the only ones that are in the sugimori style might be the ones with art by sugimori. some of my personal favorite pokemon cards in terms of the art are by yuka morii, who has an almost clay-like artstyle. the pokemon card artists each have their own unique style, to the point that you can often tell which artist did the art for a card just by looking at the art style.

@@mykemon_regions Two of those pokemon have glowing eyes, though. Actually scratch that- Mimikyu's true eyes glow when it uses its' Z-move. My point is that a lot of Ghost types in Pokemon don't have "dead" looking eyes. That being said... I love Mummeon as a concept, and I'd definitely love it as a ghost-typr Eeveelution.

@@TornaitSuperBird Thanks! Just because they haven’t done something yet doesn’t mean it shouldn’t or can’t be done. If anything that’s more of a reason to do it. They incorporate new design choices & styles for that matter every generation. Having “dead eyes” is no less creepy than having glowing eyes or spooky ghost type designs like Trevenant’s who push the envelope. And the whole point of the eye on its tail is to act as its eyes (that is its eye) and giving it more personality so it’s not just your ordinary ghost Eeveelution or mummy mon.
@TornaitSuperBird2 жыл бұрын
@@mykemon_regions Ahh, I see. That being said, compared to other Ghost-type Fakemon I see, especially the ones with "dead eyes", yours is actually the most palatable out of all of them. I like Ghost types in Pokemon, mainly because they manage to perfectly balance the spookiness with a touch of whimsy and or cuteness. That's why I like Galarian Corsola so damn much. It's spooky as hell, but it's still insanely cute. Cursola, even more so (despite the fact that it's a soul that's tethered to the shattered remnants of its own corpse, like a demented egg yolk of sorts). Seeing Mummeon in motion or in different poses would probably endear it to me more, to be honest. There's only so much you can glean from a Pokemon's personality from a single key art. For Cottail, the major thing I would like to emphasize is to make it look much closer to the animal it is based on. At the moment it's hard for people to tell what it's supposed to be. I eventually figured it out after making the connection (bunnies are known to have "cotton tail" and the artist took it literally). I just think that the design itself needs to look more like a bunny or rabbit. While yes I know that some like Eevee are based on more than one animal, but for Eevee that's the point. Mostly I'd say to give it's face a more rabbit/bunny-like appearance and also do the same for it's proportions.
@selenafigueroa82362 жыл бұрын
Agree. And I think one of the biggest flaws with it is the nose. It doesn't give the face any depth and animals dont really have round/oval noses like that. As for the ears, it gives me cocker spaniel vibes. If it's meant to be a bunny, it should have longer ears. Since the ears are also cotton, making the ears somewhat wide, it almost gives the illusion of small and poofy ears. Personally, I feel it'd be best to compensate by giving them a little bit more length (most people think of long, skinny ears when they imagine a rabbit).
@cookiemoon7441 Жыл бұрын
I feel like it depends. Personally, a pokemon is much better if it doesn't look exactly like it's inspiration, or is a mix of inspirations. For instance, the ever present "Is Eevee a fox or a cat?" Argument. I feel as though it's fine the way it is, even with the dog look. However, if the artist wants it to look more like a rabbit, then yes.
@gamingsethzers2 жыл бұрын
Maybe the Unknown on the Mummeon's tail is a clue at how it evolves? Like you have to get Eevee to level 30 at night with a Unknown in your party (like how Mantyke evolves into Mantinne when Remoraid is in the party), or Eevee has to level up while in a double battle with an Unknown on the team? Which would be a very cool thing

@macaronsncheese98352 жыл бұрын
I think it's supposed to be a bunny, given that cottontail rabbits are a thing? But if I'm right, that it's being read by everyone as "dog" is definitely an issue
@blaireshoe87382 жыл бұрын
I think it's just that it looks kinda sad/aloof/bored, but is described as a pet which is taken to the groomers. It doesn't read as friendly, yet is supposed to be a furry friend. If they were meant to be farm animals instead of pets/friends, the expression would work better for them, I think.
@Camphorous2 жыл бұрын
I think the issue is the color scheme. The contrast is too high. Combined with the western art style of the tube legs (Pokemon typically suggests joints but smooths them out. LPS uses sock toy type legs with big paws and no joints) and the western style eyes, it comes off as overall western. tldr; I think the design is fine but the art style overrides the design choices.
@falconinthedive2 жыл бұрын
I'd also say the legs are the issue. Like the head's a great concept, the body's fine but nothing really significant, but the feet being so blocky and undefined seems to be what's more reading MLP than pokemon. Even in hooved pokemon like mareep, wooloo, girafarig, or ponyta have a distinction, color breakup, or notch in the hooves to give it something more than just natural continuation and end of legs, but if it's a dog or a rabbit, paws would obviously make a ton more sense. Which granted they're tricky to draw, particularly in poses, so I can understand trying to cut them out of a concept sketch, but something more indicating the form or functionality of the pokemon's feet could go a long way.

You made some really good points in terms of design, but I don't really think that a fakemon should necessarily look like an actual pokemon. I kind of wonder if Mummeon works somewhat like Girafarig in that the tail is the head or in this case eyes? The eyes to me look like they’re intentionally closed or lidded. I have to agree on a lot of the points you make for each though. With Cottail if it’s based on a rabbit my only suggestion would be to make the ear cotton look somewhat more ear shaped. The artists who had their Fakemon critiqued were all really brave and did really good overall. I really like a lot of these. This is a nice spin on your usual art videos! I love see your reactions and takes on everyone's mons, and you're super nice and give constructive criticism about everything 💜💚

19:11 Oh yeah- like the mane flows down into the tail- that would look awesome! It’s design is still awesome though!

I appreciate your honesty with the artists and I am glad not just anybody could design Pokemon. There really is a set of guidelines that people don't pick up on.

i think this might be a good video for every artist who's starting to create their own fakemons. like i dont wanna put you on a pedestal, because no ones perfect and knows everything, but you do know a lot about pokemon designs and i feel like many should watch this video for a tips on how to improve their designs

A little disappointed my Fakemon didn’t show up, but was awestruck by the creativity everyone put forth in their designs! Great work, everybody!

Cottail’s main problem is the pose. Its body is a solid color so when its sitting down like that it becomes just a solid shape. A more dynamic pose would do wonders as it would break up the shape and show its personality

Eeveelutions? None of them are over-designed *Sylveon*

All of these were absolute winners! I personally would love to see a more grim, more "mature" pokemon game. Yeah, Gyrados is scary, give me more scary!

I think if cottail had a slightly larger head and a lighter brown for the body, and maybe some subtle green spotting or leaves that match it's eyes, it'd be perfect.

Yes! I would like to see a part 2 of this video! All of these Fakemon designs are really good!

I would love to see a Part 2! This is exactly the kind of video I'm looking for.

26:30 My only disagreement is here, Pokemon would do something like that... Cause they already did on regional Zoroark. Which does make it unlikely (though not impossible) for them to do it again.

Please do a part 2 to this! I didn't realize you had posted that. I would have definitely replied with some of the ones from my region

It is so awesome that the creators of those fake Pokemon want to improve their own drawings .and those things help other people who want to make a fake Pokemon.

13:33 This fakemon looks more like a Digimon in my opinion, possibly because like most digimon, it's a little over designed and more complicated than a pokemon.

26:17 There IS a creator currently making 'Pokemon, but they're allowed to be proper monsters' Lockstin and gnoggin.( come on, you probably know him) That this specific critique reminds me of. These design are all so good. Makes me want to design some mon.

I just had an idea for if you're making an evo to the fakemon you're making. What if for the evo that you try to imagine it evolving in the anime. It might help you create an evo that looks like it came from the previous.

Even the fakemon that weren't my personal favorites, were really well done! These artists are so good, I've watched these videos a couple times

Mummeon had little eyelashes at the bottom of the eye and none at the top, it just had its eyes closed. The ox definitely was empty, but likely just taking a leaf from Glastrier

I love how in this entire series, Choc and Kai just talks about life and predicts the future and stuff while losing a entire balloon factory

The mummy eeveeloution's eyes appear to be closed, which I think gives it more personality than is given credit to.
